Its a Good Hotel, But Nothing Special

LOCATION IS THE KEY HERE! That is why it can cost so much. But everything else is just your standard Holiday Inn once you're inside. Unimpressive breakfast buffet, unimpressive rooms, unimpressive bathrooms (with the most awful showers you've ever seen) Its an old building so that obviously has a big effect, but they could at least give the bathrooms a much needed makeover

Money-saving tip: Long walk from hotel

When staying in the CBD or Southbank, take a walk to South Melbourne. Really close but unknown to tourists. AMAZING breakfasts await you everywhere

disaster

i wrote a long letter to you but it did not go through to you. when i return to the usa, i will call you for your mailing address and send it to you. however, this is a synopsis; we arrived at the hotel at noon and were told to come back in 2 hours. in any case, i was told by your agent that the hotel had an exercise room and pool. but, they did not have any exercise room. i paid for an upgrade to get a room with 2 beds, it was on the top floor.. i brought my things up at 2pm., but there was massive construction and demolition taking place in the room next door. i went back to the desk and asked for a quieter room.they then gave me a room on the 5th floor. when we entered it, it smelled from smoke. the chambermaid came in and started to spray it to try to remove the odor. however, my wife is allergic to smoke, and we went back to the front desk. the manager started an argument with my wife saying it was a non-smoking hotel and he would go up and check the room himself. this was after 3 people had just experienced the infraction. it was theN That my wife said she wanted to leave the hotel. it was now only 2;30pm. the manager said he would charge us for the first night as a penalty, we then went across the street and checked into another hotel, and were more than willing to pay the extra amount after such an experience. in closing, i would say the hotel was seedy, uninviting, and only a 2 star hotel. two years ago i stayed at the hotel in adelaide and found it quite pleasant. i have booked many rooms with you in the past, but this is the first time i have had to complain to you. i do hope you will rectify my penalty charge. yours truly, dr.harold sussman

Good and Bad

I stayed here last week after a work conference in Melbourne and was looking for some relaxation after a week of work. We stayed here for 3 nights. First, the whole reason we chose this hotel was for the roof top pool. When we checked in we were not informed that the pool was totally being rebuilt. I made my reservation months in advance and was never once informed. It was quite a bummer to run up to the roof with the intention of relaxing by the pool only to see an empty concrete hole. The view was still spectacular, but this was a major let down and very unprofessional in my opinion. I would have stayed somewhere else if I had know, which I assume is why I was not told. The best part of this hotel is the location. Lonsdale street is amazing and you can walk/tram to anywhere in Melbourne easily from the hotel. The rooms were mediocre, but that was ok given the price and location. My advice would be to request a room on a higher floor. You'll get a balcony with a great view. Our room was on the second floor and we had a lovely view of an alley... NO FREE WIFI. I'm not sure this is stated explicitly so I'll mention this too. You have to pay 70 cents/min to use the internet in the room. We paid 30.00 for 24 hours and then the internet didn't work after the first hour. We complained, called the tech number we were given and it never got fixed. I was still charged. Overall if you want a cheaper hotel with a good location this is a perfectly good choice. However, just make sure you ask a lot of questions before you arrive...

Not what I expected

The cleanliness and quality of this hotel was not at all what I expected based on their website. Although the downstairs lobby appears to have been recently renovated, the rest of the hotel is a very old building and it shows. I've stayed at hostels that had cleaner rooms. The staff was generally friendly, although somewhat challenging to deal with at times (especially when it arose to complaints regarding the room). I decided not to stay here after seeing the poor quality of the rooms, and had to go through the hotel's senior management just to cancel my booking (the front desk staff and manager on duty didn't have the authority to help). Overall, I would say it might be worth it to stay here if you're comfortable with sub-par cleanliness, quality and rooms, but you could probably stay somewhere a lot nicer for a little extra per night (and it would be worth every penny).

The good and the not so good

Visited Melbourne for business. The hotel was offered at very reasonable price for a 4 stars hotel. Great location, easy to walk in and out, safe area and many great restaurants in the neighborhood. Booked 2 days plus 2 days as I had to travel in and out of Melbourne. Both Rooms were clean but furniture, carpet, elvators, and hallways are very outdated. The hotel should not be classified as 4 stars hotel. Internet charges and breakfast charges are way too much and I consider those as a total rip off.
