Thala Beach Nature Reserve is a deluxe family-owned eco retreat nestled in 58 hectares of native forest on a private-access beach. Conveniently located 45 minutes drive north of Cairns and 15 minutes south of Port Douglas, guests enjoy the best of the tropics from this secluded paradise. Sitting atop a headland with breathtaking vistas, Thala provides an island-feel retreat and is the ideal base for exploring the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest as all regional day tours pick up direct from reception. Boutique timber bungalows are built high on stilts and nestle in the forest canopy providing a private and unobtrusive approach to nature. Time spent relaxing on the timber-decked verandas is enhanced by sightings of birds, butterflies, wallabies, possums and sugar gliders. Granite boulders, waterfalls and overhanging trees create natural looking swimming pools blending discretely within the environment. Osprey Restaurant offers panoramic vistas, taking in the sparkling waters of the Coral Sea and the World Heritage-listed forests that clad the coastal ranges. Guests and visitors dine among the birds in the surrounding treetops while enjoying modern Australian cuisine with friendly service (and free wifi!). Guests enjoy complimentary, guided nature tours by onsite Rangers including wallaby walks, a unique coconut odyssey, outdoor stargazing, beach discovery, wildlife and bird-watching tours. Magical moments are created at Thala Beach Nature Reserve. A feeling of unspoiled wilderness sets the ambiance; yet it is only 15 minutes into the centre of Port Douglas. It is private and exclusive. A special combination of beauty, wilderness and seclusion awaits you.

The hotel staff are great at booking tours for you but be sure to check with the tour's website. Our snorkel company offered a 5% discount if booked online, which the hotel was able to match.

More rustic than luxurious

Location is really lovely about twenty minutes outside of Port Douglas. Enjoyed my little bungalow - and there was a little lizard who greeted me, snuggled up in the bath tub. Views are beautiful and the property is very large. Be prepared to do a lot of walking unless you have a bungalow close to the main building. Restaurant was great!

A-MA-ZING!!

You can't beat the views, the service or sheer relaxation that comes with this hotel! The staff was very helpful and gave us some local information and insight that made our trip unforgettable. (Make sure to visit Thornton Beach along Cape Tribulation Road if you're headed to Daintree - it was recommended by one of the staff and was one of our favorite stops!!) There is a shuttle ($8/person each way) to Port Douglas for shopping, and complimentary valet if you have our own car. Most of the tour companies pick up from Thala as part of their packages, so make sure you visit the Great Barrier Reef and the quaint shops in Port Douglas! SO GLAD we paid a little more to stay here. It was romantic, relaxing and even BETTER than the pictures show!

Stunning locale!

This place is magical! Nestled in the trees so very near the coast of the Coral Sea, the Thala Beach Lodge is an oasis. The cabins are adorable (although most do not have views of the water) but the main lodge does enjoy the stunning coast and is a wonderful location to rest and recharge after enjoying time exploring the surrounding area. Thala Beach Lodge is "perfectly" situated near Port Douglas, but away enough to feel remote and surrounded by nature. Finally, the staff, the spectacular staff of wonderful people who are so willing to lend a hand or give a smile; the BEST. Thoroughly enjoyed are stay here. Cheers!

Do visit the Port Douglas Wildlife Attraction to enjoy an exceptional experience with the "locals"... 'roos, crocs, birds, and KOALAs.
