Heron is the only Great Barrier Reef Resort located on a true coral cay. Meaning, you are quite literally surrounded by the reef, you can swim right from the beach to an endless garden of coral teeming with marine life.
Little wonder it's one of the world's best dive sites. In fact, there are more than 20 Great Barrier Reef dive sites accessible from Heron Island, half of which are within 15 minutes of the resort. Of course, you don't have to get off the island to experience natural the wonders of Heron. The Island is a protected habitat for a stunning array of wildlife including nesting turtles and an abundance of Australian birdlife.
Heron Island enjoys a pleasant sub-tropical climate with balmy temperatures all year round.
Heron Island offers a range of Great Barrier Reef accommodation.
Checking in to your room is easy, you can do it at the Marina in Gladstone so when you arrive on the island you are free to go straight to lunch, snorkel or head straight to the beach to relax.
Heron Island accommodation is designed to be as diverse as the island itself. There's something for everyone.
In the crystal clear aquamarine waters surrounding the island, stunning coral gardens and sea creatures great and small flourish in abundance and colour. It makes Heron Island a natural place for divers, swimmers, and people who love to snorkel. It also offers an array of choices for those who like to explore and laze on beaches far from crowds , with no reef 'day-trippers' to spoil the peace and quiet.
PLEASE NOTE: For Helicopter Transfers a representative from Chopperline will meet you at the Main Gladstone Terminal (adjacent to the baggage carousel), holding a sign with your name and 'Heron Island'. You will then be transferred to the Chopperline Terminal for your flight (a short 4 minute drive).
If you are driving to and from Gladstone Airport, please ensure you park in the car park adjacent to the Main Gladstone Terminal and we will organise your transfers to and from the Chopperline Terminal.
A 15kg luggage limit per person applies for all helicopter flights, and secure luggage storage facilities are available at the Chopperline Terminal. Alternatively, we can also arrange for any additional luggage to be transferred to Heron Island via our launch service.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Please provide your arrival/departure flight details or if you are making your own way to the Marina or the Helicopter Terminal as soon as you have these details confirmed, by contacting the Resort directly. Guest must notify the Resort of these details prior to their arrival.

Enjoyable Retreat

Scuba Diving: Good - short boat ride to most dive sites. Disappointing - water less clear than expectations. Great - Mantas, fish, many corals and critters. Reef Walking: Wonderful on all counts...but we did spend 3 1/2 hours circumnavigating the island looking into every coral head and following every splash. Rays, sharks, turtles, shells, clams and infinite other reef life. Hotel and Dive staff: Excellent Dining: Enjoyable and varied Rooms: Basic/Comfortable/Clean Helicopter Transfer: Excellent!!! Time of year: The hotel was at around 25% occupancy and we LOVED the space and calm. Suspect it would be completely different when full.

The location is good in that it

The location is good in that it is easy to get into the water and snorkel. Snorkeling time is limited by the tide however as it is too shallow to swim when the tide is out. The facilities as well maintained but this is not a luxury resort. The food is good, but not outstanding so if you are looking for a gourmet experience this is not the place. The meal plan is $69 per day that includes a buffet lunch, which is ample, and a three course dinner. Breakfast is included in the price. There is no other place to eat, so if you can find a package with a meal plan take it. The catamaran to the island is $480rt which is steep. Try to bargain for that if you take a package. The one thing that one really needs to be aware of is the bird population. This year they say is special, but there are so many birds in the trees that it rains guano all day all night. At night the birds make a lot of noise, so bring ear plugs. Bring a hat to keep the bird poop off your head.
