Resort and tropical gardens provide escape from the day-to-day
The Cairns Colonial Club Resort presents guests with a blend of historic Queensland style and modern resort facilities. The property is set amidst 11 acres of tropical gardens. Guests can take a short drive to the most popular attractions in Cairns -- including the restaurants and shops on the Cairns Esplanade. But many guests stay put right on the property throughout their stay. The Cairns Colonial Club Resort has three lagoon-style pools, a toddler pool and children's playground, two restaurants, and a tennis court.
Highlights
- Three lagoon-style pools and a toddler pool
- Two restaurants, including the Homestead Restaurant & Bar, popular with city residents
- Nestled in 11 acres of tropical gardens
- Conference center accommodates groups of up to 650
Rooms
The hotel offers five styles of accommodations -- from resort rooms to the spacious executive suites. All rooms open onto the hotel's gardens. Room decor blends traditional and contemporary elements. In-room amenities include air conditioning and ceiling fans, in-house movies, and limited room service. Children up to 12 stay free when sharing the room with adults.

Although some/much of the fixt
Although some/much of the fixtures/fittings are now dated, particularly when compared with more modern/latterly built hotels, they all proved adequate. The staff, in particularly reception as we had most interaction with them, were excellent and extremely helpful/welcoming.

Great Hotel, marginal location
Very nice room, grounds, restaurants and pools. Hotel has a very helpful concierge desk and sells tours at cost. Only drawback was the location, far on the northern end of town. There's not much to do or see, though it's a short (>1mile) walk to the Botanical Gardens. They also run a shuttle downtown but I didn't find the times too convenient (every couple hours at random times). About a 1/2 mile walk to Public (bus) Transportation though and that runs fairly regularly til @ midnight. Taxi fare downtown was @ $15, imagine it would be @ $25 to northern beaches. Great location if you want to avoid the hustle and bustle of downtown though.

Sightseeing tip:
In Hotel
If you do one tour while you're there--do the Chillagoe Caves Outback Safari thru Jim Tea's tours. I did 5 various tours and this was by far the best.

Value for money, it exceeded my
Value for money, it exceeded my expectations. The rooms were large but dated. The resort is spread out on a large block - expect to get lost (as I frequently did). It is located well away from the waterfront and the Cairns CBD, but a regular shuttle bus ($3 one way) operates throughout the day. It is also well located to the airport, so ideal for a transit stay. I would definitely stay again.
