Cairns is not my favorite
Sue from North Carolins Nov 4, 2009
The room was generous and the bed was very comfy... other than that the hotel was not very friendly. Poor signage ( this is ... true almost everywhere in Austrailia), all info about the hotel was on TV which was not user friendly and when finally decoded the info was worthless. Elevators did not always work well.

Cairns reminds be over Myrtle Beach SC, only even more tacky. If you are there for the Great Barrier Reef and the Rain Forest, try staying in Port Douglas instead.

The hotel was OK- nothing great but it was clean with comfortable beds and a good location for catching boat out to the Great ... Barrier Reef. Palm Cove and Port Douglas seem like much nicer towns but Cairns is convenient to the airport and boats to the great Barrier Reef.

Great, But Freezing and Noisy Room
Doug Sep 16, 2009
The Shangri-La was an amazing hotel. We stayed on the Horizon Club level (i think that was the name) and checking in couldn't ... be easier. Staying on this floor gains you access to free breakfest and afternoon appitizers and drinks. this was definately worth the extra money for the room. the room was great and very modern. nice large and comfy bed with an amazing view of the marina and bay. I had 2 large complaints that mostly dinged my score of the place, especially since we paid extra horizon club floor. We were there in August and the rooms were freezing cold. AC is on full time, and there was no way to turn it off. the staffs only recommendation was to keep the doors open or use an extra blanket on the bed. This plays right into my second complaint. the room was right above a bar with live bands and blazing music til late. So while trying to stay warm we not only let a bunch of bugs in, but we also had to endure the really loud bar noises. These two things made it hard to relax in the room and get a good nights rest. Overall the staff was really friendly and helpful. the free breakfest was nice. the room looked amazing. but if you go in the winter time, dont expect ot relax in the room without being dressed in pants and sweaters. and if you need to get to sleep early make sure you've got a good set of ear plugs or tossed back a couple of VB's

Not a 5 star hotel.

I have stayed at plenty of Shangri-La Hotels in the past and this one does not even come close to the others. The service ... here is horrible, pool is dirty and overall not a great experience. I can't believe they could call themselves a 5 star hotel.

Asians, Stay Away From This Racist Hotel
World traveler Aug 24, 2009
I was standing 10 minutes to wait checking in while the two receptionists were completely ignoring me. They immediately ... passed me over for two white couples who cut in line in front of me. Such customer service is absolutely disgusting especially at a 5 stars hotel. I WILL NEVER STEP IN SHANGRI-LA AGAIN.

Shangri-La, Cairns - 5 Star?

Great location, next to the dive boats
howlintom Aug 16, 2009
The Shangri-La was the perfect location for our trip to Cairns. We could easily walk to the wharf where the snorkeling and ... dive boats launched. Also, there was a small mall with several bars and restaurants on the ground floor. The service was very professional. Bathroom had separate tub which my travel partner really enjoyed. Balcony with chairs and table, large bedroom area. Our room was on the harbor side, which I would highly recommend for the view. I would definitely stay here again. My only complaint was that the pool wasn't heated in the winter. Too cold for me to stay in for long, and I am used to cold water. It was a shame, because it was a fabulous pool.

Great Service, Location
michelle Aug 15, 2009
Great anchoring point for exploring Cairns and the Reef - right next to the marina where boat tours leave from, and a ton of ... great restaurants right in the same complex. The pool was very nice/big/comfortable, except that the water was frigid - even cooler than the ocean! Service was fantastic. Specifically, front desk clerk Andre (only a trainee, but wonderful!) was very attentive and helpful both at check in and throughout our stay.

Try to get on one of the smaller boats if you're going out to the Reef - your snorkeling or diving experience will be much more fun when there are fewer people to bump into!

The location at the marina was perfect. Our room overlooked the marina, and came with a large balcony that we enjoyed every ... evening, looking out at the marina and the lights glancing off the water. And the hotel's concierge, [...], was fabulous. He was always there with a friendly hello and always remembered us by our last names. The staff welcomes you like a family. We added the Horizon Club, that gave us a very well established breakfast buffet, outside at the marina, as well as a very impressive assortment of evening appetizers, that included all sorts of wines, beers and soft drinks. What's not to love? This hotel actually exceeded our expectations. Would definitely stay there again!
Traveler type: Couples
It's just a very short walk (1-2 minutes) away from tour boats, and actually across the street from helicopters. No need to rent a car if you stay here. And downtown Cairns is also a peaceful walk right around the corner with lots of nice restaurants and shops along the way.

don't eat the breakfast buffet off the lobby in the Ba8 bar. Very expensive. In the mall past the fitness center is a coffee shop with great stuff & good prices.
