Pullman Reef is a safe bet
The glass-dome roof of the Pullman Reef building -- which, in a nice surprise, also provides cover for a zoo exhibit of Australian animals -- is one of the best-known architectural sites in Cairns. The Pullman Reef features more than 120 elegant hotel rooms and suites with full amenities, a casino with table and electronic gaming, four restaurants, three bars, entertainment venues, a rooftop pool and spa, and a fitness center. A variety of meeting and banquet rooms provide numerous options for conferences, destination weddings, and other events.
Highlights
- Glass-dome roof shelters a zoo exhibit focusing on Australian wildlife
- Rooftop pool
- Private garden balconies in every room
Rooms
Pullman Reef is home to 123 rooms and suites -- all of which offer spa baths, spacious balconies, and water or city views -- with full amenities. The accommodations feature traditional décor and plantation shutters. Guests rave that the bedding exceeds expectations for even a luxury hotel.
Features
Though there are no sure bets at the roulette tables, checking into the Pullman Reef is a safe bet if the goals are luxury, comfort, and fun. The casino features more than 500 electronic gaming machines and table gaming, including blackjack, and mini and midi baccarat. Guests can step into the Casino Sportz Arena bar to watch sports events from around the world on the largest indoor screen in the city.
Other on-site entertainment options include live music at the Vertigo Bar & Lounge and cocktails at the Lihou Bar.
Guests looking for a variety of food options have four on-site restaurant choices. They include the award-winning Asian-and-Western fusion eatery, Tamarind, the authentic Hong Kong and Peking cuisine of the Café China Restaurant, and the casual-dining options of the Café China Noodle Bar and Flinders Bar & Grill.

Very Positive Experience
The Pullman Reef Hotel is a great value. Lovely, large room with all the amenities (A/C, robe, hair dryer, iron, quality bath products, spa tub in addition to a shower). The king bed and pillows were oh so comfortable. Best of all, the room was really quiet. Three powerful Macs, free for guest use--no special codes and a printer for your boarding passes. The staff was unfailingly polite and helpful. Super location: a three-minute walk from the Reef Terminal and two to three blocks from excellent restaurants for dinner and cafes for breakfast and lunch. The Casino is attached, if you want to gamble, but has a separate entrance.

If you're interested in the flora and fauna, try the Wait-a-While Rainforest Tour. Pickup and return to the Pullman Reef Hotel was included as was devonshire tea with scones and clotted cream and later on dinner. The rainforest is a World Heritage Site. Our tour guide (Clayton) was awesome--pointing out mobs of wallabys, possoms, platypus, turtles; some amazing dragons. lizzards, and birds. I know I'm forgetting some. Driving home at night, he stopped for our last photo op: a 10 foot Scrub Python crossing the road.

Not worth the price
Bad hotel experience. I paid for the Deluxe upgrade for a romantic getaway for a weekend but it wasn't what I got. The check-in was painful as the front desk didn't appear to know how to check us in - to include almost running my credit card three times. Also, they didn't brief us on what the hotel had to offer. When we got into the room, the shower door was broken. Separately, the Deluxe upgrade that I chose also boasted beautiful views of the bay...come to find out I paid for a beautiful view of construction! To top it all off when we checked out, I left a necklace in the room that had a lot of sentimental value to me. When I came back later in the day after check-out, I was told they had not seen it and although they promised to contact me back after checking with the hotel cleaning staff, the hotel never did. Staying in the hotel ruined the weekend for me. For a Five Star hotel and the price that I paid - not worth it!

Pullman Reef Hotel and Casino
The hotel is very clean and the rooms were extremely nice and comfortable. Pullman Reef, is in the heart of Cairns and close to everything (great location). The hotel lacks any good restaurant, however there are literally lots of restaurants across the street and within easy walking distance. Would definitely recommend this hotel

Sightseeing tip:
Short drive from hotel
Many of the tours are north at Port Douglas or the Daintree Rain Forest, which will require bus transportation (very comfortable), the tours are worth it because you don't have to hassle with driving and the guides are very informative on just about everything, making it much more enjoyable

They still have smoking & non-smoking
They still have smoking & non-smoking levels (6 & 7). Since we didn't know about this, we were placed on the smoking level. Not bad, but we did smell some smoke in the alley.

This hotel is close to the central parts of Cairns, the docks, restaurants, and has its own casino and zoo. The only downside is the high cost of internet, which starts high and becomes metered by the megabyte.

We scored on this hotel!
Room was very nice and spacious! Great location. Close to Reef Fleet terminal where boats out to the Great Barrier Reef leave. Right on the Esplanade. Only problem was the early morning noise - around 7 am. Sounded like a truck was dumping glass bottles into a dumpster. Lucky for us we got up early each morning...

One of the best places to stay in Cairns
Good hotel. Everything was spotless. The rooms were large and had all of the amenities including a very comfortable bed. The casino/bar were fun with a live band and lots of people on a Friday night.
