Overview

Downtown location makes it easy for guests to explore Cairns. The Cairns Esplanade, popular walking spot for residents and visitors, is just two blocks from the front door. Budget-friendly but far from generic, the Hides offers old-world charm, with complimentary continental breakfast served daily on the wide colonial-style veranda. The porch also provides a good spot for people-watching during evening hours. Rooms are spacious.

Rooms

Spacious rooms offer basic comforts with straightforward décor. Some rooms have small sitting areas with a table and chairs. Smaller rooms may have bunk beds. Well-priced Heritage rooms, with one double or two twin beds, are serviced bi-weekly.

Property features

Location is close to many popular activities, with the departure point for Great Barrier Reef day trips just a short walk away. The Cairns Esplanade -- a two-block walk from the hotel -- is the start of a recommended walking and jogging route and also home to some of Cairns' best restaurants and bars. Public transportation is right outside the doors, and the Hides is also a pickup spot for tours that go to all of the top tourist attractions in tropical North Queensland. The Kuranda Railway is also a few blocks' walk from the hotel. The railway day trip takes guests through rain forests and past waterfalls on the way to the village of Kuranda.

Other amenities at the Hides Hotel include a 24-hour staffed reception desk, tour booking service, and guest laundry. The hotel has a 24-hour Internet café and wireless Internet access in the rooms.

Friends trip

Hotel is very old but in good location. Basic old rooms(curtains full of dust). Unsanitary beds and restrooms. Minimal service, housekeeping required improvement. Breakfast was OK but not fantastic.

One night at Hides

Would recommend Mon, Mar 31, 2014
If possible, do not get a room on the first floor connected to the veranda. At the time of visit, there was construction on Lake Street and work started very early in the morning. In addition, you will hear all of the street noises, especially drunken backpackers. The breakfast was a nice touch and the front desk staff were accommodating and helpful.

Just location

Would not recommend Fri, Nov 2, 2012
Hotel facilities are outdated and not in the best of conditions. Floor arrangement is like a labyrinth: To get to our room one had to take the elevator one floor (because of the luggage), then walk through long corridors (the hotel occupies one whole block), and then climb some steps and keep on walking to get there... Found a big coaackroach in our room!!!

Though probably best for backpackers, this hotel is a good location at a good price.

Don't expect much

Would not recommend Mon, Nov 7, 2011
Dried blood on the mattress and loud drunks in the street outside until 4am (at least). I expected the latter, anyway.

Lovely continental breakfast buffet on 2nd floor open air veranda overlooking walkway through center of Cairns. They even lend you a free towel to use on the dive boats on the Great Barrier Reef!!!

Great location and price

Would recommend Thu, Oct 1, 2009
This is an economy hotel with upscale comfort. It was far nicer than I had expected and would definitely return if I traveled there again. In the following satisfaction section, there is no way to know if it goes from poor to excellent or the other way around. In general I would rate it as excellent.

great location

Would recommend Sat, Sep 19, 2009
hotel was very basic and oldfashioned but clean. The staff was friendly and helpful when booking all our excursions. There was no view from the windows, but the old fasioned second floor veranda overlooking the central plaza made up for that. The free breckfast was very basic. The addition of some fruit or scones and real coffee would be great. It was a great value for the price.
