Aruba December 2012

The Holiday Inn Sun Spree Resort is a great value in Aruba. They are also under going renovations to one of their three buildings. Their beach is one of the best in Aruba. They have also started allowing people to book cabanas at 4pm for the next day as opposed to previously starting booking at 6am for that day. This is a huge improvement and greatly reduces the amount of time standing in line.

We have vacationed in Aruba for 7 years. Typically we land at 4:00pm and have to wait quite a while to get through imagration. This year we flew in at 1:30pm and had absolutely no wait.

Loud, unfriendly and unhelpful

Every morning I woke up to room doors slamming shut every 2 minutes. The maids obviously dont care that people are trying to sleep at 8:30am. Also, the staff was extremely unhelpful - no map - no advice - no change (for the drink machine that only took american quarters). They also gave preference to any spanish or latin speaking guest over the 'white' american guests. And even when they did decide to talk to you, they were not that nice. The pool bar was low grade and my room glass sliding door didnt work, phone had problems, bathroom fan didnt work. And oh!! This hotel will be under construction for quite a while - so the hammers in addition to the doors slamming was really great too!!! and the walls are paper thin - I could hear all my neighbors using the bathroom. I wont be back to this glorified motel!

Sightseeing tip: Not Applicable

Dont take the bus any further south than Oranjestad. The bus line is mostly for the locals and it not set up for tourist. Rent a car or you might get stuck somewhere. Also, get a hotel with a kitchen so you can make food. You cant even get a taco here for less than $20. And the all the restaurants seem like the food comes out of the same boring kitchen. Hard to find specialty dishes. Super market is much cheaper.

Vacation

Happy with the hotel. People were very friendly. Were not happy when we got there and were told that we had to pay for the energy tax and we had to pay $5.95 per night that we stayed (11 nights) for a total of $65.45. Would have been nice if we were told up front. Have booked through other travel agencies and have never had to pay anything other than charges incurred at the hotel while we were there. Best located hotel in high rise area

Excelent location; paseo hermano mall across the street with plenty of restaurants and shops. Separate kids pool ideal for small children. Widest beach area of all high rise hotels. Room Balcony handy for doing yoga in the morning. One whirlpool did not worked. Building is old, but in good condition. $18.10 for buffet breakfast is very reasonable.

an unwanted surprise..

This was our 3rd time staying at the H-I in Aruba, but this time there was an unwelcome suprise. When we checked in they told us there would be an upcharge of $5.95 per day for an "Energy Charge" which was news to us. They said that it was on the booking information, but I can't find it anywhere. I have never been charged it before, it is supposed to be a package price. They said that Obz would not pay or bill it that we had to pay the additional amount. I am not happy that we were charge this bogus charge for them to make additional profit. When I protested they said they always have had it, but we were never charged for it before. This is an average hotel needs some updating, so to walk in and be banged for an upcharge doesn't sit well with us. We probably won't be back to the Holiday Inn. I don't like add on's when it's supposed to be a package price. You better check first so you don't be banged like we did...

better get what you want early, every place in the building closes about 7:30pm. We had to buy some bottled water in the only place open (the bar) and they charged us $3.50 per 12 oz. bottle...

Dosen't Get Any Better

For our purposes..........the Holiday Inn is the best. It's location, it's price and of course it's beach bar with food and drinks right there are all we need. Add to that....... pleasant staff all around and we are set for the week. I connected with the lady behind the conciderge desk in such a way................that when we went to say goodbye, she came out from behind the desk to give me a goodbye hug.
