- Area description
- Axel Hotel Buenos Aires is located in San Telmo, where history, bohemian-chic and the port city's gay scene meet. Cradle of the tango, San Telmo's characteristic features are its antiques stores, bars and restaurants in remodeled 19th century houses. A few blocks away from Avenida 9 de Julio and the Casa Rosada, every weekend the flea market fill the picturesque Plaza Dorrego with movement, people and colour.Lately, San Telmo is starting to position itself as the epicenter of the gay movement and scene, due to its tireless and hedonist nightlife, bars, discos and restaurants loaded with style and glamour, fashion boutiques, literary cafes and the mystic sensuality of the tango that can still be felt in its streets. In the heart of San Telmo, the staff of the Axel Hotel Buenos Aires will update you on the latest in the gay scene, so that you do not miss a thing.

Value for Money
Overall the hotel is getting worn, but you have to consider the value for the money paid. We had a great time meeting other fellow travelers in the common areas. It's true the hotel has seen better days, but the areas are clean and comfortable. The rooms are a bit noisy, but this is not a hotel to come to for a quiet stay. Come to the Axel for the pool, the Sunday party, a modern look and feel, the chance to meet other like-minded travelers, and a safe and secure place to stay. This is our second Axel experience (last time was in Barcelona), and we would pick it again!

Sightseeing tip:
Long walk from hotel
Take the Buenos Aires Free Tour. It's great, and you can't beat the price. They give a nice overview of the city and the history while walking along the major streets. Also, the guides speak English if that is a consideration.

Great Value, but not close to airport
Found this hotel when this web site indicated that it was close to AEP airport in downtown Buenos Aires. There was a very special price offered, and the hotel mentions airport shuttle. Well, they do call a cab on your behalf, but they don't pay for it: the cab fare is on you. They use a private car service, and the $98. Pesos is more than you would pay for a cab. It is about a 15 minute cab ride from the downtown airport. Ok: While this hotel does market to gay guest, they also market themselves as "heterofriendly", and they are that. Very friendly and the gay thing just isn't a big deal. The rooms are very nice, but the hotel is very avant garde, so things might seem a bit strange to the conventional traveler. There are no doors or curtains on the shower, for instance. Indeed, the shower is surrounded by glass. It's cool if you like that sort of thing. Super nice amenities and linens. Very comfortable bed. And, the floors are bare concrete; no carpets. I did use room service for one meal, and it was first class. Excellent food and service. The bar downstairs is expensive, but most hotels are. Sundays are pool party days= beware. I found most of the staff speaks English. Fast WiFi throughout the place. The rest of the hotel is very modern, clean and classy. I would certainly stay again with the exception that it isn't close to an airport.

Nice hotel, terrible location.
Overall a nice 3+ star hotel marred by the location. Despite being near the Casa Rosada, the San Telmo area is filthy and smelly, with pavements littered with rubbish and dog mess. It is described in the guide books as the romantic heart of Buenos Aries but is far from that. The hotel itself is well designed with very nice staff, but charges $15 per person per day for use of the very limited gym, steam room, sauna and roof top pool. This is despite it being marketed as a Hotel and Spa with no mention on the website of an extra charge. The sister hotel in Berlin does not charge extra for this.

Perfect for a tight budget
You cannot get any better for such a price. It is clean, comfortable, very good bed, staff is very helpful, the design is great. Every thing is just perfect. The only but is breakfast: I am vegan and there were not many options for me. Iti si gay, but really heterofriendly, there wer all kinds of people. Quiet.

Long walk from hotel
La oreja negra, not that well known place for live music in Palermo, check the schedule, sometimes moder tango, sometimes folk, but also rock and pop, which in Argentina is usually good quality.
