Great value, beautiful location, average rooms, no crowds in off season.

I read the reviews ahead of time and knew these would not be 5 star luxury accomodations, and my wife and I were very pleased. Every one of the staff was great and very friendly. It is a large resort of about 1000 rooms but during Sept there couldn't have been more than a couple hundred people, mostly from the UK. They had very cool shows with fire dancers and steel bands. Free sailing lessons and use of catamarans on-site, and a concierge to help with other off site adventures. Well worth it to stay here and save several hundred dollars to then use on other excursions or shopping (which you would probably spend anyway!). Food was plentiful but of average quality, not too surprising for a buffet, still better than paying for meals plus tip elsewhere.

Not Good

The location was good. The water and beach were clean. The hotel is old in need of updating, our bed was like sleeping on the floor and so were the pillows. Maid service never brought what they needed to clean our room, each day they would take the wet towels and I would have to request new ones. One day we ordered a hamburger from the tiki bar. I watched in horror as she grilled a pre-cooked burger, it was then burned. There was never any variety at breakfast, every day I asked for bananas and yogurt. "Tomorrow" "Tomorrow never came. 90 percent of the staff was clueless. The person at the tour desk did not know points of interest, they need to go through training to be able to sell a tour. We met 2 other couples there to spend our holiday together. I feel as though we wasted a weeks vacation along with a lot of money. On our own we went sailing and toured the island. It would have been nice if the hotel could have helped out with some of the arrangements.

Antigua March 2014

I guess we can sum this trip up with the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The Good - Jolly Beach has an excellent beach and location. This is what is keeping people coming back to this resort. The price we paid was excellent and even $1000 less than what our friends paid for the same trip. They booked on another website. The weather could not have been any better, low to mid 80s all week and no rain. We are not Caribbean experts but March seems like the perfect month to go there. The food at Jolly Beach is decent for the most part. The breakfast was the same every day and could use some variety from day to day. The same for lunch but they did change the dinner theme nightly. The staff is very friendly, some more than others, but are a bit slow. The Bad - the hotel is very old and needs a serious makeover. The hotel rooms are small and not very clean. The bathroom in our room was pretty bad (unclean) and very outdated. The room service was not good at all and almost every day we had to ask for new towels. The Ugly - This would be some of the shady local characters on the beach selling their goods and services. I would warn all visitors to avoid a local called 'Cloud'. He will not live up to his promises and take your money. However another gentleman we worked with called 'Lawrence' was completely honest and worked out great. Overall we had a great time. We took the island catamaran tour and did some snorkeling. On Sunday night we took the drive up to Shirley Heights, the highest peak on the island, and joined the watch the sunset party.

Excellent experience

From the moment we arrived until the time we left, the staff at the hotel couldn't have be more helpful and pleasant. Some aspects of the resort are tired, but the staff made up for any shortfalls and it was certainly excellent value for money.

good value

I got the all inclusive option and it was a great value because it includes cocktails and wine. This hotel also offers in-room catering suites which are great for travelling with family. Front desk activity was slow (check in and check out) but the staff was very nice and willing to solve any issues - just be patient. Beach and pools were gorgeous. Buffet was also very good!! Afternoon tea was fun as well.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

If you have kids and opt for the non-inclusive meal options (which would be expensive for the amount that little kids eat) opt for a suite with a kitchen, there is a very nice supermarket a short walking distance away (Epicurean).

Best beach on the island

If u want to lay on the beach and spend time by the pool this resort is for u, both r simply beautiful and amazing! Rooms are outdated with old mattresses, staff is not going to go above and beyond to help you (they r on island time and simply can't be bothered), food is average. This hotel is perfect for beach lovers, but don't expect special treatment. Realize u r going for the beach and pool time not the hotel itself. Also, a very child friendly resort with kids club.

Beach is the best

As we arrived we were surprised to see how slow and quite rude the staff is. The room(we booked on superior king room) was clean and ok. The hotel looked run down and instead of 5 restaurants we found at the most 4 but not always open. In the first week we had for 4 days buffet open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, then it closed due to refurbishment and we had to go for breakfast , lunch into Lydia's on the far end of the resort. But that's not all. in addition to the buffet place there are 3 more restaurants, which you have to book (as otherwise they are fully booked), ha-ha if at any time more than 20 people are in there they are full. Anyway the opened only on some days. The Italian is by far the best, as the staff is very nice and helpful and the food is ok. When the buffet was open, there you did have quiet a good choice. The Indian did have only halve of the a la carte menu there, not even poppadoms, not during the 2 weeks we were there. Food otherwise was below average. Lydia's seafood restaurant was the worst! Very rude staff, bad comments regarding some nationalities, no grilled fish and you had to wait for your main dish approximate 45 min, as they were more busy chatting to each other, also you had to ask to get drinks or your food. We went there twice and both times it was the same. Very bad indeed. Regarding drinks: During the 2 weeks we tried on all bars to get banana daquiries, but there were no bananas available(on an Caribbean island). We went out into Jolly Harbor and other restaurants and paid for it. As we were AI, we spend another £1500 just for food and drinks, as the hotel did not meet any standard. We got told Jolly Beach Resort has got 3 stars, they are only from the beach which is definitely the best on the island. would have been better off to book room only, as we spend a lot money for food and drinks. Night entertainment as advertised did not happen either, so overall stay away from that hotel!!
