During your Seattle vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame (SFM)
Located inside the Experience Music Project, this little exhibit is another project of Seattle's own billionaire nerd Paul Allen. Just as in EMP, this museum is packed with pop-culture icons, this time from the world of science fiction. With displays of actual props and costumes from such historic sci-fi films and TV shows as Star Trek, Star Wars, Alien, Dr. Who, and Terminator, this place is an absolute must for devoted fans of one of literature's least-respected yet best-loved genres. The museum spends a lot of time chronicling the history of science fiction, including displays of 1930s and 1940s pulp fiction magazines. Other displays focus on the fans themselves (and the conventions they stage), as well as the connections to science. But, for most visitors, it's the movie props that are the real draw. From robots to jet packs to space suits and ray guns, it's all here.
Burke Museum
Located at the northwest corner of the University of Washington campus, the Burke Museum features exhibits on the natural and cultural heritage of the Pacific Rim. Permanent exhibits include Life & Times, which covers 500 million years of Washington history (and prehistory) with lots of fossils, including a complete mastodon, on display. The second permanent exhibit, Pacific Voices, focuses on the many cultures of the Pacific Rim and their connections to Washington State. There is also a smaller temporary-exhibit gallery. In front of the museum stand three modern totem poles carved in the style of the 1870s and 1880s.
Hiram M. Chittenden Locks
There is something oddly fascinating about locks. No, not the locks on doors -- the locks that raise and lower boats. Locks don't provide panoramic views and aren't nearly as dramatic as waterfalls, but for some strange reason, a lot of people are intrigued by the concept of two side-by-side bodies of water on two different levels. Consequently, the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in the Ballard neighborhood are among the most popular attractions in the city. These locks, operated by the Army Corps of Engineers, consist of a small lock and a large lock. The latter accommodates barges, commercial fishing vessels, and the like, while the small lock stays busy shuttling small private boats (including sea kayaks) between the saltwater of Puget Sound and the freshwater of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, which connects to both Lake Union and Lake Washington. It's a slow process locking boats back and forth, but none of the onlookers seem to mind, and people onshore and those on the boats often strike up conversations. When the gates of the lock are closed, it's possible to continue to the far side of the ship canal to the fish ladders and fish-viewing windows that provide opportunities for salmon viewing during the summer months. The chance to see salmon in a fish ladder is as much of a draw as the locks themselves, and in the past the fish runs have also attracted hungry sea lions that at times become regular salmon-swallowing pests. Also here at the locks, you can stroll the grounds of the Carl S. English, Jr., Botanical Gardens, a city park filled with rare and unusual shrubs and trees. There are free tours of the grounds Monday through Friday at 1 and 3pm, Saturday and Sunday at 11am and 1 and 3pm.The locks are located a 10- to 15-minute drive north of downtown. Follow Elliott Avenue north along the waterfront from downtown Seattle; after crossing the Ballard Bridge, drive west on NW Market Street.

Good location, good food

Try Palace Kitchen for dinner!

The Warwick is a great hotel for seeing Seattle. You are walking distance to great shopping and Pike's Place Market. The restaurant in the hotel is good, and there are several excellent restaurants within a block. The only down side to this hotel is the fitness center; it is terrible. Only one treadmill, one old stair master, and one weight machine. This is an area that could use an upgrade! Other than that, it's a great hotel.

I'm sold

Maria, Omaha, NE, 2006-12-30

Walk three blocks towards the water. Take the elevator down. Walk towards the piers for great seafood and great views of the puget sound.

I grew more and more impressed with the Warwick hotel as our stay went on and even thereafter. The hotel was nice and clean no doubt. We stayed for five nights. Having a refrigerator in the room proved to be beneficial for obvious reasons. The housekeeping was good about cleaning around our things. It was nice to come back to a clean base. There was a pack n play (crib) for my daughter ready when we arrived. It was surprisingly spotless. I realized that I left a straightening iron a couple days after I returned home. I called the Warwick. They had found it along with a pair of shoes I didn't even catch! They sent them promptly free of charge. The location could not be better.

Nice Hotel except for Weak Wi-Fi

Anonymous, 2006-12-08

Get a room on upper floor as traffic noise (buses) is substantial

Hotel is fine, well located, well run and very comfortable. Rooms are recently renovated and beautifully furnished. If you are planning to use wi-fi however ($9.95 per day) be advised it is weak and inconsistent throughout the building. Otherwise it's a good value for downtown Seattle.

Affordable eats are located in and around Pikes Market!

The Warwick was a great deal for the price! The view of the city and Space Needle were great. The location was perfect for walking around the city to see all the sites. I would stay here again!

Warwick hotel & neighborhood

craig, Des Moines, IA, 2006-11-13

The Warwick Hotel in Seattle is surrounded by 4 star restaurants. One of which is in the hotel. I had a several nice meals in the neighborhhod. The hotel restaurant is excellent but get there early as seating is limited. The Hotel is conveniently located in downtown but nicely a couple of blocks off the tourist track. I highly recommend.

Very comfortable

Gilda, Cincinnati, OH, 2006-11-12

Make use of the courtesy van. The wind and rain in Seattle make walking even a short distance uncomfortable.

The Warwick in Seattle was a beautiful hotel and the room was very comfortable. It was larger than we expected, and besides the king size bed, there was a comfortable couch and a desk area. The bathroom was larger than usual, and very comfortable. The view of the sound and the Space Needle was spectacular. It is located in the heart of downtown, and it was very easy to walk to several attractions, restaurants and stores. The courtesy van to area attractions was very convenient and nice. I would stay there again if we should travel back to Seattle.
