Russian Attack Submarine
This Cold War-era Russian submarine is berthed just south of Washington State Ferries' Colman Dock at the south end of the waterfront, and the long black submarine is an ominous sight on this touristy stretch of Seattle shoreline. The sub, code-named Cobra, was built in 1972 and was in service for 20 years. After watching an introductory video, which provides a bit of background on Russian submarines, you board the sub for a self-guided tour of the main deck. An audio recording explains what you are seeing as you walk through. For anyone who lived through the Cold War, it is thrilling just to be inside a sub that was once considered "the enemy."

Frye Art Museum
Located on First Hill not far from downtown Seattle, this museum is primarily an exhibit space for the extensive personal art collection of Charles and Emma Frye, Seattle pioneers who began collecting art in the 1890s. The collection focuses on late-19th-century and early-20th-century representational art by European and American painters, with works by Andrew Wyeth, Thomas Hart Benton, Edward Hopper, Albert Bierstadt, and Pablo Picasso, as well as a large collection of engravings by Winslow Homer. In addition to galleries filled with works from the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions are held throughout the year.

Museum of Flight
Located right next door to Boeing Field, an active airport 15 minutes south of downtown Seattle, this museum will have aviation buffs walking on air. Housed inside the six-story glass-and-steel repository are some of history's most famous planes.To start things off, there's a replica of the Wright brothers' first glider, and from there the collection of planes brings you to the present state of flight. Suspended in the Great Hall are more than 20 planes, including a 1935 DC-3, the first Air Force F-5 supersonic fighter, and the Gossamer Condor, a human-powered airplane. The new Personal Courage Wing houses 28 World War I and World War II fighter planes. You'll see one of the famous Blackbird spy planes, which at one time were the world's fastest jets (you can even sit in the cockpit of one of these babies), as well as a rare World War II Corsair fighter that was rescued from Lake Washington and restored to its original glory. Visitors also get to board a retired British Airways Concorde supersonic airliner that recently went on display here. An exhibit on the U.S. space program features an Apollo command module. Of course, you'll also see plenty of Boeing planes, including a reproduction of Boeing's first plane, which was built in 1916. The museum also incorporates part of Boeing's old wooden factory building from its early years.While any air-and-space museum lets you look at mothballed planes, not many have their own air-traffic control tower and let you watch aircraft taking off and landing at an active airfield. During the summer months, biplane rides are usually offered from in front of the museum.The Museum of Flight Restoration Center (tel. 425/745-5150) is located north of Seattle at Paine Field, which is near the city of Everett. Here you'll see planes in various stages of restoration. The center is open Tuesday through Thursday from 8am to 4pm and Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Call for directions. Paine Field is also where you'll find the Boeing Tour Center. Together, these two make a fascinating half-day outing.

A bit disappointed

The hotel dining area and bar was very comfortable.

THe room was just OK. I had to ask to be switched twice. The bathroom was so small you could hardly move around in it. I had asked for a room with two beds and they could not accommodate me. Overall, fine but would look elsewhere in the future. Interestingly, I will be going to Seattle frequently over the next several months and will now begin to look for other options.

Tasteful, comfortable hotel

We found a very nice shopping area due west of the hotel in the Fremont area. Enjoyed the small flea market there as well as the boutique shops and numerous restaurants.

This old art deco hotel has been recently remodeled but still has its older hotel charm. The room we had was small but had a corner window overlooking the neighborhood which gave the impression of space and was very attractive and comfortable. The public areas, bar and restaurant were all cozy and inviting and felt like a smaller boutique hotel. We enjoyed our dinner at the hotel restaurant and, although the menu was not large, we and our friends all were very satisfied with our meal and restaurant accomodations. One friend in a wheel chair had no problems accessing the restaurant or getting special seating and help from the staff as needed. She was very complimentary of the service.

Great location

University Row has many great places to eat with a wide variety

The University Tower Hotel was is a great University neighborhood with the best places to eat in Seattle just a short walk. Rooms were big and had a great view of the city. The elevator very very slow. The cont bereakfast was one of the best I have been to, however we did not know about it till the third night, it is a well kept secret.

Get up early and eat breakfast before 9:30am.

This is more of a business hotel but worked very well for a one night getaway. Great view and decor and complimentary breakfast. Location is great because it's easily accessible to I-5.

Hip and Efficient

University Tower is what you should expect from an urban hotel: stylish, friendly, efficient. They handled late arrival, towel requests and parking with ease. On-site coffee house and jazz band in the basement (weekend) elevates this place from obiquitous mundane hospitality to comfortable favorite. The only reason NOT to recommend is to enhance room availability when I return.
