The Edgewater

The Edgewater, Seattle's only waterfront hotel, overlooks Elliott Bay and the Olympic Mountains, and is situated at the water's edge on Pier 67. Built in 1962 as a temporary structure for the World's Fair, The Edgewater has become a Seattle landmark and a beloved part of the city's history. The illuminated red rooftop "E" provides direction for ships navigating in Puget Sound.Directly over Elliott Bay, this unique location gives guests the access to waterfront shops & restaurants, Pike Place Market, the trendy Belltown neighborhood, the downtown financial district, Seattle Center - including the Space Needle, the Victoria Clipper, Washington State Ferries and the adjacent Myrtle Edwards Park -all within 5 minutes of the hotel. The Waterfront Street Car Bus operates from Pier 70 to Pioneer Square, offering free transportation along the waterfront. Recently renovated guest rooms feature redesigned guest bathrooms with garnet-colored walls and white beadboard wainscot; including amber quartz slate flooring, glass surround European spa showers, and white vessel sinks atop absolute black granite counters and stainless steel base.Like the Northwest, Six Seven offers distinct seasonal experiences. In the winter, diners relax fireside in the lounge's overstuffed chairs. In summer months, the restaurant's bayside glass doors open wide, offering guests direct views of ships sailing Elliott Bay and exhilarating vistas of the Olympic mountains - the city's best alfresco meal setting. Guests enjoy cocktails at the glass-topped rough-split timber bar year round.

During your Seattle vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Russian Attack Submarine
This Cold War-era Russian submarine is berthed just south of Washington State Ferries' Colman Dock at the south end of the waterfront, and the long black submarine is an ominous sight on this touristy stretch of Seattle shoreline. The sub, code-named Cobra, was built in 1972 and was in service for 20 years. After watching an introductory video, which provides a bit of background on Russian submarines, you board the sub for a self-guided tour of the main deck. An audio recording explains what you are seeing as you walk through. For anyone who lived through the Cold War, it is thrilling just to be inside a sub that was once considered "the enemy."
Museum of Flight
Located right next door to Boeing Field, an active airport 15 minutes south of downtown Seattle, this museum will have aviation buffs walking on air. Housed inside the six-story glass-and-steel repository are some of history's most famous planes. To start things off, there's a replica of the Wright brothers' first glider, and from there the collection of planes brings you to the present state of flight. Suspended in the Great Hall are more than 20 planes, including a 1935 DC-3, the first Air Force F-5 supersonic fighter, and the Gossamer Condor, a human-powered airplane. The new Personal Courage Wing houses 28 World War I and World War II fighter planes. You'll see one of the famous Blackbird spy planes, which at one time were the world's fastest jets (you can even sit in the cockpit of one of these babies), as well as a rare World War II Corsair fighter that was rescued from Lake Washington and restored to its original glory. Visitors also get to board a retired British Airways Concorde supersonic airliner that recently went on display here. An exhibit on the U.S. space program features an Apollo command module. Of course, you'll also see plenty of Boeing planes, including a reproduction of Boeing's first plane, which was built in 1916. The museum also incorporates part of Boeing's old wooden factory building from its early years. While any air-and-space museum lets you look at mothballed planes, not many have their own air-traffic control tower and let you watch aircraft taking off and landing at an active airfield. During the summer months, biplane rides are usually offered from in front of the museum. The Museum of Flight Restoration Center (tel. 425/745-5150) is located north of Seattle at Paine Field, which is near the city of Everett. Here you'll see planes in various stages of restoration. The center is open Tuesday through Thursday from 8am to 4pm and Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Call for directions. Paine Field is also where you'll find the Boeing Tour Center. Together, these two make a fascinating half-day outing.
Chapel of St. Ignatius
Lest you think subtlety is a concept unknown to architects commissioned to design contemporary buildings in Seattle, pay a visit to this tasteful little chapel on the campus of Seattle University, a Catholic institution. Designed by architect Steven Holl, the chapel was conceived as "seven bottles of light in a stone box," with each of those bottles of light reflecting an aspect of Catholic worship. The "bottles" are basically ways of channeling light into the chapel, and though the exterior seems rather stark and angular, on the inside, soft light in different colors suffuses the rooms. The chapel is something of an exercise in the ways natural light can be used to illuminate a building, and the overall effect is positively enchanting.

Great Views But Overpriced

John, Pittsburgh, PA

Edgewater Hotel offers some great views of the Seattle Harbor and the Puget Sound. The gas fireplaces in the rooms are very nice while enjoying these views. Arriving late, my wife and I immediately when to bed to discover in the middle of the night our bed box springs was broken. The rooms and bathrooms are clean. Please note the staff is very helpful, courteous, and friendly.

Many food options around the area. I will recommend the space needle as one. It has a fantastic view and very good food. There are many other food options to go too aswell. Everything is farley close. I walk down to just befor quest field and it only took about 30 minutes so you can pretty much walk anywhere in a timely manner.

i was extremely impressed. I am not used to the guest services doing everything for me. There was always a town car if you needed it, there service was great. A defenite hit was the free shuttle to anywhere in downtown, although I did choose to walk a bit. Overall very impressed and would stay there again.

Beautiful Setting and Location

Judith, San Jose, CA, 2007-02-18

There is so much to see and do in downtown Seattle, The farmers market was great, the hotel provided a shuttle service there. Nearby are also other restaurants, the Hwy 99 club had a live Jazz band when we went.

We were happily surprised with the room accomodations, the well stocked refrigerator and the huge double beds. The linens were exceptional, the bathroom shower with slate enclosure was awesome, the remodeling job the Edgewater had done was very tasteful and inviting. The toiletries provided soap, shampoo, rinse etc. were very good quality. The bathroom came equipped with a wall mounted magnifying mirror with lights,a blow dryer with retractable cord, just all the comforts and convienences one could ask for. An umbrella was even provided in the closet. They thought of everything. The room had a fireplace with two chairs and a bear footstool that I wanted to take home. The french doors to the bathroom and the color schemes in the room were just beautiful. The room's country theme was tastefully done. We really enjoyed the accomodations and the staff at the Edgewater were great. The hotel even provided a shuttle service to and from any place downtown. This eliminated us having to rent a car. I would not hesitiate to go back again.

Relaxing Place

George, Anchorage, AK, 2007-02-14

The purpose of our trip was to visit the Seattle downtown area. And we were not disappointed many fine places to dine and they were from causal to the fine dining. We especiallyu enjoyed the Iris Pub Fados more for the entertaining and knowledgeable waiter Carter. We look forward to visiting Seattle downtown again!

Although the Edgewater was undergoing a little bit of construction it was a relaxing stay. I think the staff, outside of the front desk and the bar could have been a little more attentive to friendliness. The room while a little small was apparently just redone and was missing any place to hang your towels if you wanted to re-use them. We enjoyed being right on the water and the fireplace.

Water front street car runs all day, everyday, every 20 minutes and is free. Pick-up right outside hotel.

Beautiful views, great city location. The room we stayed in was small and did not have ocean view but the lounge area was very cozy and inviting and the view from the restuarant was lovely.

Wear comfortable shoes as the walk at times will be uphill.

Edgewater was a unique hotel built out over the water. With its history and great location to downtown, it's a must stay. While the staff was excellent, we did have a few minor issues with our room. The heating fan was very noisy. It took only one call to the front desk who offered to change our room or have the electrican check our fan. We selected to stay in our room and within the hour the fan had been fixed. With a fireplace in every room, you enjoy the warmth and great views looking out over the water. Did I forget to mention that we upgraded to a waterside view that was great for watching the ferrie boats come and go out of the Seattle port. Highly recommend this hotel.
