During your Seattle vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Children's Museum
The Children's Museum is located in the basement of the Center House at Seattle Center, which is partly why Seattle Center is such a great place to spend a day with the kids. The museum includes plenty of hands-on cultural exhibits, a child-size neighborhood, a Discovery Bay for toddlers, a mountain wilderness area, a global village, and other special exhibits to keep the little ones busy learning and playing for hours.
Hiram M. Chittenden Locks
There is something oddly fascinating about locks. No, not the locks on doors -- the locks that raise and lower boats. Locks don't provide panoramic views and aren't nearly as dramatic as waterfalls, but for some strange reason, a lot of people are intrigued by the concept of two side-by-side bodies of water on two different levels. Consequently, the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in the Ballard neighborhood are among the most popular attractions in the city. These locks, operated by the Army Corps of Engineers, consist of a small lock and a large lock. The latter accommodates barges, commercial fishing vessels, and the like, while the small lock stays busy shuttling small private boats (including sea kayaks) between the saltwater of Puget Sound and the freshwater of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, which connects to both Lake Union and Lake Washington. It's a slow process locking boats back and forth, but none of the onlookers seem to mind, and people onshore and those on the boats often strike up conversations. When the gates of the lock are closed, it's possible to continue to the far side of the ship canal to the fish ladders and fish-viewing windows that provide opportunities for salmon viewing during the summer months. The chance to see salmon in a fish ladder is as much of a draw as the locks themselves, and in the past the fish runs have also attracted hungry sea lions that at times become regular salmon-swallowing pests. Also here at the locks, you can stroll the grounds of the Carl S. English, Jr., Botanical Gardens, a city park filled with rare and unusual shrubs and trees. There are free tours of the grounds Monday through Friday at 1 and 3pm, Saturday and Sunday at 11am and 1 and 3pm.The locks are located a 10- to 15-minute drive north of downtown. Follow Elliott Avenue north along the waterfront from downtown Seattle; after crossing the Ballard Bridge, drive west on NW Market Street.
Henry Art Gallery
The focus of the Henry Art Gallery, located on the west side of the UW campus, is on contemporary art with retrospectives of individual artists, as well as exhibits focusing on specific themes or media. The museum benefits from large, well-lit gallery spaces illuminated by pyramidal and cubic skylights that can be seen near the main entrance. Photography and video are both well represented, and for the most part, the exhibits are the most avant-garde in the Seattle area. The museum's latest cutting-edge installation is Skyspace, by James Turrell, who uses light to create his artwork. The Skyspace is a small room with an oval opening in the ceiling to frame the sky. At night, the outside of the glass Skyspace is illuminated by an ever-changing light show. The museum also has a cafe and a small sculpture courtyard. Parking is often available at the Central Parking Garage, at NE 41st Street and 15th Avenue NE. Expect the unexpected here -- and prepare to be challenged in your concept of what constitutes art.

DIRTY AND RUN DOWN

JAMIE, 2007-02-18

THE RESTARAUNT NEAR BY IS GOOD TO EAT A QUICK MEAL AT.

THE DAYS INN SEATTLE/TUKWILA WAS OKAY. WE WERE VERY UPSET WHEN WE FIRST CHECKED IN AND OUR ROOM HAD A VERY DISTURBING ODOR TO IT. THIS MOTEL WAS NOT VERY WELL KEPT UP AND I WON'T EVER BE STAYING IN A DAYS INN DUE TO MY RECENT EXPERIENCE.

This Days Inn was a very unkept facility. I felt threatened by the location and the upkeep. I could see from the outside, in the dark that the room was unkept and filthy and once I entered the room I immediately proceeded to breaking the contract and finding another hotel.

next to freeway loud and felt trucks rumble by.

SeaTac is close by

The Day's Inn at Tukwilla was located next to the I-5 freeway so the noise and vibration was very evident. The hotel staff was not very helpful and refused extra pillows for some reason known only to them. They do have computers set up to look for info but were very stingy on providing sufficient paper for the printer. I would not recomend this motelnor would I stay there again.

Location, location, location

About the only thing this hotel has going for it is its proximity to Sea-Tac airport and Seattle and its price. I guess it's true that you get what you pay for. It is sandwiched between I-5, a very busy freeway, and a major trucking distribution center. The interstate just happens to be sloping in this area so the truckers are using their compression brakes (that wailing wahhhh, wahhhh, wahhhh sound). There is only one restaurant(couple of steps below a Denny's) in the town and no grocery stores for miles. It is conveniently located for easy access to I-5 N or S. My second night I returned to the hotel, tried my key (electronic), and it failed. I went to the front desk, was given a new key, was only asked my room number and last name (no ID required) and she didn't seem to care that I was possibly inconvenienced. My toilet ran intermittently, about every 15 minutes and it was very audible. When sitting upon the toilet, it rocked back and forth and left and right and was very unstable. While dining at breakfast one morning, I noticed a guest upstairs had to open her sliding window and push out the screen to get out of her room. The electronic lock wouldn't function properly so she and her family couldn't use her door. With that I checked out and headed for the airport.

Difficult check in

Anonymous, Pasco, WA, 2006-06-26

Hotel itself is fine, our difficulty came with checking in. We arrived at noon and tried to get to our room but could not get a room for another 1.5 hours. There were at least 10 other people waiting for rooms as well. The staff said the check in time was 3 pm. I've never had a difficult time getting a room before and was surprised that this many people had to wait so long.

Inexpensive accomodations

Walking path access along a river within walking distance.

Close to the airport and downtown. Shuttle bus available to the airport. Free internet access, but the connection was slow. The room was clean and a restaurant was within easy walking distace. The heated pool was refreshing.

continential Breakfast

Close to the Airport

The hotel room was resonabley comfortable the amenities were reasonable. the real complaint that I had was the continential breakfast could have had better and fresher food. But;the worst part was the crowd it made you feel like skipping it and going to a resturant. If only they could find a way to stagger people to the breakfast room by room number or alphabetically but I would use the Hotel again.

Don't stay

Deborah, 2006-05-13

There is a resturant nearby that serves great food for the money.

The hotel was very nosiy. The rooms were little and old. Windows shades were broken, no remote for the TV, gnats flying around the room, bathroom was very small, they did not leave enough towels or coffee for two people. The people at the reception desk were not very helpful and lied when I ask them to do something for me. I would not stay at this place. I'm sure there are much more reasonable places that are much nicer.
