During your Salt Lake City vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Family History Library
This incredible facility contains what is probably the world's largest collection of genealogical records under one roof. The growing collection is composed of a substantial number of records from around the United States, fairly comprehensive data from Scotland and England, and information from many other countries. Most of the records, which date from about 1550 to 1920, are from governments, various churches and other organizations, and individuals. The Mormons created such a huge genealogical library because they believe that families are united for eternity through marriage and other sacred ordinances given in the temples. These ordinances, such as baptism ceremonies, can be done on behalf of ancestors -- hence the interest in tracing all deceased family members. When you enter the library, help is available to assist with your research. There are forms you can fill out with any and all data you already know (so come prepared with copies of whatever you have), and you will be directed from there. An orientation is given to newcomers and includes a handout and a map of the library. Volunteers are stationed around the library to help with anything you need. Some of the records are in books, and many have been converted to microfilm, microfiche, and computer files. The volunteers will show you how to use any unfamiliar machines. One of the easiest ways to begin a search is to start with the place where your ancestors lived, because records are organized first by the geographical origin. From there, you can spend hours immersed in discovering the whos, whats, wheres, and whys of your family history -- we know, we did it!
Joseph Smith Memorial Building
Formerly the historic Hotel Utah, this magnificent building has been renovated and converted into offices, meeting spaces, restaurants, and reception areas (it's very popular for wedding receptions). Between 1911 and 1987, this was a world-renowned hotel; the lobby retains its art-glass ceiling and massive marble pillars, and the architectural details have been lovingly restored throughout. It's worth a stop for a peek inside. There are 200 computers in the FamilySearch Center (tel. 801/240-4383), and a staff to help with your genealogical research. A big-screen 500-seat theater offers free (but ticket required, call tel. 801/240-4383 for schedule and to reserve a ticket) showings of an hour-long movie about the life of Christ. Allow half an hour to an hour and a half.
Museum of Church History and Art
This collection of church art and artifacts, started in 1869, includes Utah's earliest Mormon log home, rare 1849 Mormon gold coins, and a scale model of Salt Lake City in 1870. The history of the LDS Church is related in the exhibits that describe each of the church presidents, from Joseph Smith to the present; activities include multimedia programs, films, and puppet shows. There's also a museum shop (closed Sundays). Allow 1 hour.

Great Access to Convention Center

Martin, Pittsburgh, PA

restaurants, entertainment and convention center all close by.

The Shilo Inn met all our needs along with the pleasant surprise of being so close to the convention center. The room was large, plenty of space for hanging clothes and king bed was almost as comfortable as home. Pool, sauna, whirl-pool and exercise equipment were all clean and working.

Sightseer Friendly

John, 2007-02-27

There is a huge open mall 5 blocks from the hotel. Tons of eating establishments, theatres, and many unique shops.

The Shilo Inn at Downtown Salt Lake City was very enjoyable. The spa area was very relaxing and in good condition. The room was very clean and worth the price. The windows on the room were sealed shut. I like an open window when I sleep. The fan feature on the air conditioner seemed to work just as well. The Shilo Inn was very close to bus routes, Morman Temple, and many shopping experiences. I would definitly stay at this hotel again.

My review of Shilo Inn Salt Lake City

Anonymous, 2007-02-22

The room had a peculiar smell like Garlic or something that seemed to be in the walls. The bedding was fine but it just smelled like Garlic. The breakfast was just okay but we purchased some toast and cocoa because the menu was very limited.

Very Accommendating

Rosalie, 2007-02-17

Many restaurants and sights within walking distants.

The Shilo Inn was a comfortable place to stay. I enjoyed the warm cookies each evening. The front desk staff was very informed and knowledgeable about the area. I was really surprise about all of the amentities, i.e. complimentary breakfest each morning and free coupons to surrounding restaurants,

Good Value, central local

Anonymous, Portland, ME, 2007-02-10

Good coffee and breakfast/lunch sandwiches availible in the small shop 3 doors west of the hotel.

Shiloe Downtown SLC is a good value. A step above basic needs for not too much money. The breakfast that comes with the room is much better than the usual continintal but is limited and wears out after a few days. But the hotel has a very central location and good dining options are within a short drive and most within walking distance. Ski resorts in the Cottonwood Canyons are 20 minutes and Park City is 25-30 minutes . Staff are friendly and helpful.

a little work needed

Gregory, Tampa, FL, 2007-02-08

Great sandwich shop about 1 block west called Toasters.

The room was comfortable and clean. The staff was friendly. Free parking is included. I have 3 complaints. The toilet didn't flush properly, sometimes taking 3 attempts to get it to flush. The sink wouldn't drain water (same reason the toilet wouldn't flush?) and I couldn't regulate the heat in the room. I had the thermosatat turned off in the middle of winter and the room was 80 degrees.

good value

patrick, New York, NY, 2007-02-07

The 2 brew pubs were very close and offered great food, service and microbrews.

The room was a nice size and the free breakfast was great. The hot tub was closed for 2 days for some unannounced reason which was a downer. The ski bus was very convenient (right out front) as well as the free airport shuttle by the hotel. The hotel was overall a good choice and value for the money.

Great place to get away!

Flora, Chicago, IL, 2007-02-05

What can I say? I walked outside the hotel and was facing the Convention Center! Turned right and there was Temple Square. Walked in any direction for a minute or two and there was everything! The gorgeous churches, the Delta Center, the museums. Restaurants, you name it.

This was my first, and not last time staying at the Shilo Inn. The staff are super friendly and very helpful! Although it was a change from Chicago, I went to Salt Lake City to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Windy City. I was amazed at the location of the hotel! It was literally walking distance to everything. I had set up spa treatments at Akasha Spa (which was fabulous!) and it took me 10 minutes max to walk there from the hotel. My room was great I was put in a suite on the 12th floor which had a breathtaking view of the city and the mountains. The next few days that I was in Salt Lake, I just alked around and was able to take in everything from the culture, the beautiful buildings, and everyday life in the city.
