During your Salt Lake City vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Clark Planetarium
This state-of-the-art planetarium presents star shows depicting the wonders of the universe, light shows, and big screen movies in Utah's only 3-D IMAX theater. It also contains a variety of interactive exhibits ranging from a display about the names of the planets to a Foucault pendulum, plus a rotating relief globe. Allow 1 to 3 hours.
Utah's Hogle Zoo
This small, modern zoo near the entrance to Emigration Canyon is home to 1,100 animals representing over 250 species. You'll find a solarium with exotic plants and birds, tropical gardens, rare Grevy's zebras, and a giraffe house with a balcony so you can look eye-to-eye with the tall-necked creatures. Among the newer residents of the zoo are a pair of Amur tiger cubs and a baby Colobus monkey, all born at the zoo in 2003. In summer, rides on a small replica of an 1869 steam train are offered for the bargain-basement price of $1. As with any zoo, it's best to visit in one of the cooler seasons, or at least the coolest part of the day, when more animals are out and about. Allow 1 to 2 hours. The Discovery Theatre presents three children's programs daily.
Council Hall
Completed in 1866, Council Hall is a fine example of Federal-Greek Revival architecture. Originally located downtown, it first served as City Hall and the meeting place for the Territorial Legislature; in the early 1960s it was dismantled, coded, and reassembled -- block by sandstone block, 325 of them -- in its present location. Today, it houses the Utah Travel Council (www.utah.com) upstairs; the ground floor contains a bookstore and gift shop. Allow about 3/4 of an hour.

Okay place to stay

Eric

This is a good place to stay for Sundance, as the Salt Lake theaters are nearby and it's easy to get onto I-80 to drive to Park City.

I stayed here for eight days during the Sundance Film Festival. The room was comfortable, the bed was adequate. My room key stopped working four times, which necessitated four trips to the front desk after long days, which was annoying. The food is awful. Don't order room service or dine at the Olympus Cafe downstairs. The location is convenient to I-80. The staff is polite. Overall, an okay place to stay if you're going to be busy outside the hotel during your stay. The free wireless internet is a plus. The TV channel selection is poor.

Walk down a couple blocks and take the trolly. In city limits it's a free and fun way to get around.

The Red Lion was a clean hotel with a great staff. The problem I had was the room was very very small. This was the first hotel I have ever stayed at that didn't have a table. If all you want to do in the room is write a letter or sleep this hotel will suit you.

Convention center and shopping is ~ 6 blocks walking, but a shuttle is also available

Staff was cordial and ameniities made stay convenient and comfortable; some remodeling needed (ongoing crew work in halls was slightly cumbersome at times, but no major problem).

Nice location, but small and run down.

Fred, 2006-10-22

Dining locations were excellent. Cafe Pierpont, serves fantastic Mexican food and is only two blocks away. One block away is P. F. Chang's, a very good Chinese restaurant. The Little America is kitty corner and serves excellent cuisine morning, noon, and night.

The Red Lion Hotel had good service, but it was not the quality hotel I had anticipated. The location was convenient, and the hotel staff were friendly and helpful. The room was smaller and not as clean as the former Red Lion Hotel. The bathroom was small and cramped with only one sink. Cleanliness was average. I found hairs in the towels that were definitely not ours. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

First Time Stay

Anonymous, Cleveland, OH, 2006-03-01

Christopher's Steakhouse is two blocks from the hotel.

This was the first time I stayed at a Red Lion Hotel. It was my first trip to Salt Lake City. They were in the process of renovating the rooms, but apparently didn't get to mine yet. Location was very nice. Right in the middle on downtown Salt Lake City. I would consider staying there again, but I would first check to see if the renovations are complete.
