During your Salt Lake City vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Mine
The world's largest open-pit copper mine, at 2 1/2 miles wide and three-quarters of a mile deep, is quite a sight to see, and almost as fascinating are the huge -- and we do mean huge -- trucks that transport the ore. The visitor center, 2,000 feet above the floor of the open-pit mine, offers a spectacular view, and you might even see an explosion, as rock is blasted away to expose more copper ore. In addition to the observation area, the visitor center has interactive exhibits -- including 3-D microscopes for examining minerals -- and offers a 14-minute video presentation that relates the mine's history and geology and describes its operations. Proceeds from admission fees are donated to local charities. Allow about 1 hour.
Utah State Historical Society Museum
Housed in the waiting room of the 1909 Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Depot, this museum exhibits historic artifacts, photos, and paintings. You'll see full-size replicas of a Conestoga wagon and a Mormon handcart, as well as one of the artificial hearts developed in 1976 by the University of Utah's Dr. Robert Jarvik. The large gift shop offers a variety of western gifts and toys, plus an excellent selection of books. Allow a half hour.
Utah Museum of Natural History
Located in the old university library building, this museum covers more than 200 million years. Some 200 exhibits -- including some intriguing dinosaur exhibits -- take you on a journey through time, describing the geologic and natural history of Utah right up to the present. Allow 1 hour.

clean, nice rooms

The Microtel was better than expected. For the price it was clean and well taken care of. They featured a nice continental breakfast. The location is a bit removed from downtown, but the freeways were close enough to be able to drive downtown easily.

Great hotel for the money

desiree, 2007-03-06

10 miles away from Great Saltair and 5 miles from downtown clubs, bars, dining, etc.

The Microtel Inn was a great place to stay while visiting Salt Lake City. A friend and I spent one night there while visiting the area. It was a great location and easy to find. The hotel was clean, the staff was extremely helpful and friendly, to include the ammenities available for the money spent were exceptional. Parking is also not a problem to include free. I have stayed in hotels, motels, and hostels all over the world; and this is a great place for the money. If you are only visiting for a short while and need somewhere to stay that is affordable; I would not hesitate to tell a friend about Microtel Inn.

nice scenary into town

The staff was very helpful and friendly, when asked what there was to do in town, the offered good ideas and direction. The rooms were what you would expect for the price, slightly small, but other than that they were clean and well taken care off.
