During your Salt Lake City vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Council Hall
Completed in 1866, Council Hall is a fine example of Federal-Greek Revival architecture. Originally located downtown, it first served as City Hall and the meeting place for the Territorial Legislature; in the early 1960s it was dismantled, coded, and reassembled -- block by sandstone block, 325 of them -- in its present location. Today, it houses the Utah Travel Council (www.utah.com) upstairs; the ground floor contains a bookstore and gift shop. Allow about 3/4 of an hour.
Classic Cars International Antique Auto Museum of Utah
More than 200 antique and classic cars are packed into several showrooms here, and many are for sale. Although the collection is constantly changing, among the vehicles we admired were a 1903 Steven Duryea, a beautiful bright yellow 1926 Stutz Bearcat, an elegant 1929 dual cowl Duesenberg, a 1936 Packard V-12 two-door convertible, several 1959 big-finned Cadillac convertibles, and a 1925 Packard Phaeton convertible owned by gangster Al Capone. There are usually a number of muscle cars from the 1960s as well. All cars in the collection, whether original or restored, are fully operational. You'll also see antique slot machines, gas pumps, and a jukebox. Allow at least 45 minutes to an hour.
The Children's Museum of Utah
With more than 140 permanent exhibits, this is the place for kids of all ages to explore: Children can get their faces painted, pilot a jet, or excavate a woolly mammoth on an archaeological dig. The museum also features a child-size grocery store where kids can be both shoppers and checkers, and a room where shadows "stick" to a wall. A "color factory" helps children discover music, dance, and theater through colors -- they actually create color in the Chromolator and use the Bubbelator to play a tune. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Allow 1 to 3 hours. Note: As we went to press, plans and a major fund-raising campaign were underway to relocate the museum to larger quarters; call or check the website for the current location.
