During your Salt Lake City vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Beehive House
This house was built in 1854 as Brigham Young's family home. Young also kept an office here and entertained church and government leaders on the premises. Young, a lover of New England architecture, utilized much of that style in his house, including a widow's walk for keeping an eye on the surrounding desert. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of the lifestyle of this famous Mormon leader by taking a guided tour of the house. It has been decorated with period furniture (many pieces original to the home) to resemble the way it appeared when Young lived here, as described in a journal kept by his daughter Clarissa. Young's bedroom is to the left of the entrance hall. The Long Hall, where formal entertaining took place, is on the second floor; it was also used as a dormitory to house visitors. Young's children gathered in the sewing room, where they helped with chores, bathed by the cozy stove, and studied Christian principles. Only one of Young's 27 wives lived in the Beehive House at a time; the rest, with some of the children, lived next door in the Lion House (not open for tours) or in other houses. Built of stuccoed adobe in 1855 through 1856, the Lion House was named for the stone lion guarding its entrance. Before you leave, stop at Eagle Gate, a 76-foot gateway that marked the entrance to the Brigham Young homestead, located at the corner of State Street and South Temple. It's been altered several times over the years, and the original wooden eagle has been replaced by a 4,000-pound metal version with a 20-foot wingspan. Allow about an hour.
University of Utah
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints opened the University of Deseret in 1850, just 2 1/2 years after they arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. It closed 2 years later, due to lack of funds and the greater need for primary education, but reopened in 1867 as a business academy. The name changed in 1892, and the growing school moved to its present location in 1900. The university now sprawls over 1,500 acres on the east side of the city. The university's Red Butte Garden and Arboretum (801/581-4747; www.redbuttegarden.org) features 50 acres of display gardens and another 100 acres in their natural state, with 4 miles of nature trails. Located in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, this is a terrific spot to take a break from hectic city sightseeing. The gardens are open May through September, Monday through Saturday from 9am to 8pm, Sunday from 9am to 5pm; October through April, Tuesday through Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Admission is $5 for adults, and $3 for children 4 to 17 and seniors 60 and over. From downtown, drive east on 400 South, past the university entrance, continuing until 400 South becomes Foothill Drive; turn east on Wakara Way and continue to the entry drive. Allow 2 hours. The University is also home to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and the Utah Museum of Natural History.
Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Mine
The world's largest open-pit copper mine, at 2 1/2 miles wide and three-quarters of a mile deep, is quite a sight to see, and almost as fascinating are the huge -- and we do mean huge -- trucks that transport the ore. The visitor center, 2,000 feet above the floor of the open-pit mine, offers a spectacular view, and you might even see an explosion, as rock is blasted away to expose more copper ore. In addition to the observation area, the visitor center has interactive exhibits -- including 3-D microscopes for examining minerals -- and offers a 14-minute video presentation that relates the mine's history and geology and describes its operations. Proceeds from admission fees are donated to local charities. Allow about 1 hour.
