During your Salt Lake City vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Joseph Smith Memorial Building
Formerly the historic Hotel Utah, this magnificent building has been renovated and converted into offices, meeting spaces, restaurants, and reception areas (it's very popular for wedding receptions). Between 1911 and 1987, this was a world-renowned hotel; the lobby retains its art-glass ceiling and massive marble pillars, and the architectural details have been lovingly restored throughout. It's worth a stop for a peek inside. There are 200 computers in the FamilySearch Center (tel. 801/240-4383), and a staff to help with your genealogical research. A big-screen 500-seat theater offers free (but ticket required, call tel. 801/240-4383 for schedule and to reserve a ticket) showings of an hour-long movie about the life of Christ. Allow half an hour to an hour and a half.
Pioneer Memorial Museum
Operated by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, this museum, housed in a Grecian-style building, contains an immense collection of pioneer portraits and memorabilia. The main floor contains paintings, photos, and the personal effects of church leaders Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball. The collection also includes a manuscript room, household displays, and exhibits on spinning, weaving, railroading, mining, and guns. The restored 1902 steam fire engine is our favorite exhibit. All four stories are packed with relics of Utah's history. You can walk through on your own or with the aid of a guide sheet; tours are also available. A 12-minute film is shown throughout the day. Allow 1 hour.
Capitol Building
Built between 1912 and 1915 of unpolished Utah granite and Georgia marble, the capitol, considered one of the finest examples of Renaissance Revival style in the West, rests on a hill in a beautifully landscaped 40-acre park. The state symbol, the beehive (representing industry and cooperation), is a recurring motif both inside and out. Those who don't want to take the free tour can walk through on their own.The Rotunda, which stretches upward 165 feet, is decorated with murals painted during the WPA years (the four largest depict important scenes in the state's early history) and houses several busts of prominent historical figures, including Brigham Young and Philo T. Farnsworth, the man whom we can all thank for bringing us television. The chandelier is astounding -- weighing 6,000 pounds and hanging from a 7,000-pound chain.Other rooms include the State Reception Room, known as the Gold Room because the walls are made from locally mined gold-traverse marble; the offices of the governor and lieutenant governor at the west end; the Hall of Governors, a portrait gallery that honors all those who have served as governor of Utah since statehood in 1896; and at the east end, the offices of Utah's attorney general. Downstairs, you'll find a small souvenir shop and some exhibits, including a large topographical map of Utah. The third floor houses the Senate, House of Representatives, and Supreme Court of Utah. You can either climb one of the two marble staircases or take the elevator. The state legislature meets for 45 days in January and February; visitors are welcome to sit in the galleries on the fourth floor, which overlook the chambers. In front of the House of Representatives, you'll see a replica of the Liberty Bell, one of 53 bronzed and cast in France in 1950. Allow at least an hour to explore here.

Never again!

I know you get what you pay for, but this hotel is not a value either way. The advertised Deluxe breakfast consisted of make yourself a piece of dry toast or a bowl of stale cereal in the dirty employee kitchen behind the check-in counter. It waws furnished with some folding chairs and some old tables. The floor seemed not to be cleaned in I don't know how long. It really grossed me out, especially because we had our 20-month old daughter with us who still tries to check everything out. Housekeeping was not up to par either. The room had two really worn and fraid towels and one washcloth. That's it. Also, we didn't feel very secure in the hotel either. There was a lot of coming and going of some quite shady characters. I had to go back to our vehicle to get my daughters shoes one night and was approached in the parking lot by a weird acting man. Not safe! I have stayed at other America's Best Inn & Suites and I guess those great experiences let me to believe that this one would be ok as well. I truely can say, that if I ever stay in Salt Lake City again, it will NOT be at America's Best Inn & Suites.

Never Again

Jon, Fort Lauderdale, FL, 2006-10-12

Americas Best Inn was nothing what a Hotel was intended for. No ice available or vending machine and housekeeping you had to make the request. This was one of the worst places to stay. I would not reccomend this to anyone.

Poor attention and furniture in very bad shape"

This is really a joke of hotel "Americas best Inn" they do not take care of the costumes, the people at the front desk, they never know anything, but they will report to the boss, we complain more than twice because they do not clean the room, no clean towels, no bed done, once we left the bathroom in good condition, when we return to the room, we find the toilet cloged and I personally, report to the clerk at the front desk, and they can do anything, I asked for a bucket and a plumge and did the work. Continental Breakfast.... another joke. To much to tell..
