During your Salt Lake City vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Mine
The world's largest open-pit copper mine, at 2 1/2 miles wide and three-quarters of a mile deep, is quite a sight to see, and almost as fascinating are the huge -- and we do mean huge -- trucks that transport the ore. The visitor center, 2,000 feet above the floor of the open-pit mine, offers a spectacular view, and you might even see an explosion, as rock is blasted away to expose more copper ore. In addition to the observation area, the visitor center has interactive exhibits -- including 3-D microscopes for examining minerals -- and offers a 14-minute video presentation that relates the mine's history and geology and describes its operations. Proceeds from admission fees are donated to local charities. Allow about 1 hour.
Gardner Village
This quaint village is a cluster of restored historic homes and buildings surrounding Gardner Mill, a flour mill built by Scottish immigrant Archibald Gardner in 1877. Brass plaques tell the stories of each of the historic structures. The mill, which is on the National Historic Register, now houses a large store specializing in country furniture and gift items, as well as Archibald's Restaurant. Close to two dozen shops in the other historic buildings, connected by red brick paths, sell a wide range of items, including art, crafts, clothing, candy, quilts, dolls, and home furnishings. There's also a spa, a bakery, and a picturesque duck pond. Plan to spend at least an hour here.
Utah's Hogle Zoo
This small, modern zoo near the entrance to Emigration Canyon is home to 1,100 animals representing over 250 species. You'll find a solarium with exotic plants and birds, tropical gardens, rare Grevy's zebras, and a giraffe house with a balcony so you can look eye-to-eye with the tall-necked creatures. Among the newer residents of the zoo are a pair of Amur tiger cubs and a baby Colobus monkey, all born at the zoo in 2003. In summer, rides on a small replica of an 1869 steam train are offered for the bargain-basement price of $1. As with any zoo, it's best to visit in one of the cooler seasons, or at least the coolest part of the day, when more animals are out and about. Allow 1 to 2 hours. The Discovery Theatre presents three children's programs daily.

This property is an excellent choice for airport hotel. I arrived at SLC well after 10:30pm. Called the hotel and their shuttle picked me up in less than 10 minutes. The staff was professional, courteous, and efficient. From the elevator and hallways, you can tell that this is a working hotel, although not dirty or run down. My room was well equipped and clean. The bed was excellent, the cable was as good as anyone else's, and the internet connection was on as soon as I powered up my laptop. At checkin, I received a coupon for breakfast in the hotel restaurant. Eggs, Bacon and Toast. Much better than the bagels and cereal that many other hotels give you. Breakfast was the only meal that I had there, but I would easily rate the restaurant on par with Denny's or IHOP. Nothing fancy, but clean and quick. The only other thing to mention in that this hotel is at the airport. About the only thing around is the Car Rental. If you are looking dining, shopping, and entertainment, find a place downtown. But if you need a quick place to sleep before or after a flight, this is it.

Convenient & Affordable

Arlene, 2006-11-20

This hotel was extremely convenient to the airport and reasonable. The surrounding area was not great but I was assured the parking areas was very secure. In addition, the hotel offered complimentary breakfasts which were great . Overall, very satisfied.

Good Location

James, Bozeman, MT, 2006-10-27

If you require close proximity to shopping, entertainment, nightlife, then this is not the hotel for you. While you can find all these things within a few miles, you'll need to rent a car or take a taxi. This hotel is well-situated for travelers and offers the basics (restaurant, laundry, bar) in the hotel itself.

We chose the Airport Inn Hotel because of its location close to the airport and the fact that it provided a free airport shuttle at all hours of the day or night. We required a very early shuttle and it was provided as promised. The pool and jacuzzi - oddly, right in the lobby of the hotel - was a treat. The free breakfast in the restaurant downstairs was more substantial than the usual "continental" breakfasts. The only problem was that our room keys (cards) had to be re-programmed each day we were there, but I think this was due to the fact that one of the desk clerks was new to the job and didn't know how to properly program the cards. Overall, everything conformed nicely to our expectations

Convenient to Airport and OK

Anonymous, Springfield, IL, 2006-09-20

The hotel was convenient to the airport, but it was obviously an older, somewhat musty smelling hotel with worn carpets and stains on the ceiling in the hallways. The staff was helpful and courteous. The restaurant was very good. Parking lot was dimly lit.

Next to General Avaiation terminal

Henry, Las Vegas, NV, 2006-08-28

Great value, and very close to airport, and they have as airport shuttle.

Nice, clean up todate motel, with all the amenities that you need. Great value. A little plane noise around 6-7am, but not so much that it was a bother.

Strange Outside Smell

William, Las Vegas, NV, 2006-08-25

Don't count on Map Quest to locate the hotel, they're off over a mile from the real location.

This is an average hotel. A monster piece of furniture takes up much of the room. A place where pilots, flight attendents and travelers come and go at all hours of the night. We were on the second floor and about 2:00 AM awakened by a late arrival stomping around the room above us. The hotel is located near an industrial area and outside it smells like a refinery.

Airport Convenience

Gregg, Milwaukee, WI, 2006-08-24

If you want convenient, inexpensive, decent place to sleep and wireless service, this is the place. Not the nicest or the cleanest, but the staff is excellent, the beds are ok and it's near the airport. The price is right!

Check in at Airport Inn was quick and easy. The best part was that it was within five minutes of the airport. So easy. So quick.

efficient but nothing special

Christopher, Atlanta, GA, 2006-07-04

The Mormon Temple is one bus ride down (take the # 50 bus, $1.50 per person each way). By the Delta Center there is a mall with restaurants and a pretty interesting planetarium.

The Airport Inn Hotel was close to the airport and had a shuttle, so it was convenient for a one-night layover in Salt Lake City. However it was not the totally relaxed environment we'd hoped for. The airport shuttle forgot about us and left us waiting for an hour. The pool in tiny and strangely in the lobby of the hotel (it shares the space with the registration desk and the hotel restaurant). It did not look well kept or inviting. The room itself was fine, the bed, bath, television and air conditioning were what we expected. To our pleasant surprise there was no noise noticable from the nearby airport. Public Transportation was convenient to get downtown for dinner and back.
