During your Salt Lake City vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Clark Planetarium
This state-of-the-art planetarium presents star shows depicting the wonders of the universe, light shows, and big screen movies in Utah's only 3-D IMAX theater. It also contains a variety of interactive exhibits ranging from a display about the names of the planets to a Foucault pendulum, plus a rotating relief globe. Allow 1 to 3 hours.
This Is the Place Heritage Park
Brigham Young and the first wave of Mormon pioneers got their first glimpse of the Salt Lake Valley at the site of this historic park. A tall granite and bronze sculpture was erected in 1947 to commemorate the centennial of their arrival. The park, which covers more than 1,600 acres, offers hiking along part of the trail used by the pioneers, with opportunities for cross-country skiing in winter. This is a good place for wildlife viewing and birding in winter and spring, with additional songbirds and raptors present in summer and fall. There's a picnic area, but no camping, and a visitor center contains exhibits depicting the Mormon pioneers' trek from Illinois to the Great Salt Lake Valley in 1847. Allow 30 minutes. Also here, Old Deseret is a pioneer village comprised of original buildings from across the state along with some reproductions. In summer and during special events it becomes a living-history museum of the period from 1847 to 1869, with costumed villagers and a variety of demonstrations and activities, including wagon rides. Allow 1 to 2 hours. For a week each December the village becomes the setting of a pioneer Christmas celebration.
University of Utah
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints opened the University of Deseret in 1850, just 2 1/2 years after they arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. It closed 2 years later, due to lack of funds and the greater need for primary education, but reopened in 1867 as a business academy. The name changed in 1892, and the growing school moved to its present location in 1900. The university now sprawls over 1,500 acres on the east side of the city. The university's Red Butte Garden and Arboretum (801/581-4747; www.redbuttegarden.org) features 50 acres of display gardens and another 100 acres in their natural state, with 4 miles of nature trails. Located in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, this is a terrific spot to take a break from hectic city sightseeing. The gardens are open May through September, Monday through Saturday from 9am to 8pm, Sunday from 9am to 5pm; October through April, Tuesday through Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Admission is $5 for adults, and $3 for children 4 to 17 and seniors 60 and over. From downtown, drive east on 400 South, past the university entrance, continuing until 400 South becomes Foothill Drive; turn east on Wakara Way and continue to the entry drive. Allow 2 hours. The University is also home to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and the Utah Museum of Natural History.

fine for an overnight stay

Kim, 2007-03-13

needed a place to stay for the night. didn't want to spend alot of money for the night. although the location was great, the upkeep had something to be desired. stains were evident on the walls and stairwells. the rooms were clean, but did not have the overall feeling of deep cleaning. my phone reservation was with a one syllable person, but the lady that checked me in was very friendly. the continental breakfast was very limited in what was offered....it was either bran or sugar cereal, brown bananas, only sugar doughnuts (no muffins or english toast) and the milk and orange juice were not easily accessible. for a night it was fine, but would not want to stay for more than that.

Poor

Debra, Denver, CO, 2006-10-28

The rooms were unclean sheets and towels were worn excessively. Carpets were dirty. Beds very uncomfortable. Staff checked me into a dirty room. Had to recheck in. It was a huge pain. I will never stay there again.

A home away from home

John, Honolulu, HI, 2006-09-30

It was close to Lehi Utah and close to Temple square .

The registration was easy and simple; the clerk was very friendly. The location was in the middle of where I needed to do business. It was easy to get on and off I-15 The complementary continental breakfast was convenient for someone on the go early in the morning. The room was clean, comfortable and quiet. I'm glad I stayed there.

The worst hotel I've ever been in during my entire life!!!!

David, Kansas City, MO, 2006-07-22

I can't imagine staying in a worse hotel than the Days Inn South in Midvale, Utah. From the moment we checked in, we had problems. When we were told how to get to the rooms and made our way upstairs, we found two adjoining rooms that were dirty, cluttered with old food in refrigerators and bureau drawers, and needing a vacuuming very badly. The air conditioners were off, even though the temperature was near 100' and, when we turned them on, we found that they didn't work. In the time it took for us to arrange to get two different rooms, we found that mouse droppings had been deposited on the beds of the original rooms. The two new rooms, although the air conditioners worked, were just as dirty and in poor repair. My room had no cold water working in the bath tub and the tub itself was broken with a large hole in the outside of the top rim. Electrical outlet covers were broken and we could not interest anyone in replacing them. When we used the provided coffee pot, it tripped the electrical breaker and we couldn't find anyone to get interested in that problem either. I had small children, my grandchildren, staying with us and I found this to be a dangerous situation. The outside swimming pool was also in need of attention and didn't get any. There were leaves and other things floating in the water and not cleaned up. When all these things were brought up to the management, we received excuses about the maintenance man and the hotel owners not being there. My original plans were to stay in the hotel for five nights. We stayed one night and found the hotel too dirty and too dangerous to remain. We found other accommodations for the rest of our stay

Just for sleep

Anonymous, 2005-11-06

Not much of anything. Restaurants were near, but not needed. Nothing else that applied to our trip, was close.

The Day's Inn was on a dark street, so seemed scary, but the room was good enough for the quick overnight's stay. If we had to stay longer, or needed more ammenities, we would not recommend it. No shampoo, etc - faucet was broke, and toilet kept running all night. The room was clean, so that was nice-and having 2 beds to spread out on was comfortable. Bottom line, satisfactory would be our rating, nothing too fancy about the place, and should have been rated lower, as well as the price.
