During your Dallas vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Swiss Avenue Historic District
Toward the turn of the 20th century, the Dallas elite began to abandon the area that now comprises the Arts District and move east (near the modestly funky Lakewood neighborhood). Sprawling, grand homes from the early 1900s -- English Tudor, Georgian, Spanish, you name it -- line a broad avenue, about 4 blocks of which are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Wilson Blocks (2800 and 2900), named for Frederick Wilson, who built a number of the homes there, are especially attractive. Around the holidays, Swiss Avenue is a favorite for Christmas lights cruisers. A drive-by can be done in 15 minutes; allow a half-hour if you want to stroll.
The Dallas World Aquarium
Housed in a former warehouse in the West End district, the Dallas aquarium not at Fair Park is a good place to hide out from the sun downtown. My niece and nephew enjoy communing with the stingrays, sea turtles, sharks, and reef fish. Their favorite, though, is "Orinoco -- Secrets of the River," an immersion into the tropical rainforest of Venezuela, a cool area teeming with Peruvian squirrel monkeys, endangered Orinoco crocs, jaguars, and soft-billed toucans. The newest exhibit is "Mundo Maya," with a 400,000-gallon shark tank. Plan on about an hour's visit. A restaurant and a cafe are on the premises.
Dallas Zoo
If you're headed west to Fort Worth, and one zoo trip will do, you'd be better off waiting (the Fort Worth Zoo, along with the one in San Antonio, are the two best in Texas and two of the best in the country). Otherwise, if the kids are clamoring for some wild animals, the recently renovated Dallas Zoo -- the oldest zoo in Texas, founded in 1888 -- isn't likely to disappoint (one feature, "Wilds of Africa," was named the top African zoo exhibit in the country). The 85-acre park also features a habitat for rare Sumatran tigers, a chimpanzee forest, and a monorail safari ride. A couple of hours spent here should suffice for the kids.

Massive stone lions standing guard at the entrance greet business travelers and weekenders looking for a romantic getaway. The mahogany-paneled registration desk retains the original key and mail slots. The quiet lobby with its molded ceilings houses antiques and cushy velvet ...

The hotel was overall pretty nice. The TV reception was poor and the hotel seemed a little tired.

Very Nice Hotel

Eat at the Great Outdoors...it's great.

The Richardson Hotel was very easy to get to with parking that was very convenient (it was pouring rain the night we stayed). The staff was very helpful and courteous. We enjoyed the comfortable luxories of just simply staying in and relaxing on the VERY comfortable bed and watching movies. Overall, I was very pleased and plan to stay again sometime soon.

Great for family gatherings or business

Anonymous, 2006-05-21

There were numerous good restaurants a few minutes away. Just drive north on I-75.

The Richardson Hotel was the perfect hotel for a mini family reunion. The rooms are big, very clean, properly maintained and well appointed. The room decor was more sophisticated than the usual hotel chain look. The beds were so comfortable with 6 soft pillows each. The desk had plenty of work space. The vanity area was large with plenty of space for toiletries and 2 people to get ready at once. The closet doors had a big full length mirror and plenty of hangars and space inside. The shower was large, good water pressure with towels readily accessible. Basic toiletry items, hair dryer, iron and coffee maker were available. The location is the hotel's best asset. It is located right around the corner from I-75 at East Cambell Rd. in a very safe neighborhood. Great shopping and wonderful restaurants are minutes away. It is easy to access any area of Dallas from this hotel and the hotel itself is easy to find. From check-in in the huge lobby to check out we had a wonderful experience.

Good Business Hotel

Anonymous, Houston, TX, 2005-09-22

I don't believe that there is room service, but they sell snacks etc. at the front desk.

The staff at this hotel is friendly and generally good. Although there is a pool and a restaurant, this is really a business traveler's hotel. The rooms appear stylish. This is not a place that you would want to spend a long vacation, but it is ideal for a business trip. There's free wireless internet, and there's plenty of work space. I plan to stay there whenever I am in North Dallas for business.

Nice Hotel--Great Restaurant

Anonymous, 2005-08-11

The hotel is very elegant in marble with wide hallways and excellent rooms. However, the high point was the restaurant. The wait staff was excellent, friendly and attentive. The chef went above and beyond in preparing meals made to suit each of the diners. One needed something not on the menu due to medical reasons. He not only prepared an excellent dish but made the presentation an event. It was wonderful!
