During your Dallas vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Dallas Zoo
If you're headed west to Fort Worth, and one zoo trip will do, you'd be better off waiting (the Fort Worth Zoo, along with the one in San Antonio, are the two best in Texas and two of the best in the country). Otherwise, if the kids are clamoring for some wild animals, the recently renovated Dallas Zoo -- the oldest zoo in Texas, founded in 1888 -- isn't likely to disappoint (one feature, "Wilds of Africa," was named the top African zoo exhibit in the country). The 85-acre park also features a habitat for rare Sumatran tigers, a chimpanzee forest, and a monorail safari ride. A couple of hours spent here should suffice for the kids.
Swiss Avenue Historic District
Toward the turn of the 20th century, the Dallas elite began to abandon the area that now comprises the Arts District and move east (near the modestly funky Lakewood neighborhood). Sprawling, grand homes from the early 1900s -- English Tudor, Georgian, Spanish, you name it -- line a broad avenue, about 4 blocks of which are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Wilson Blocks (2800 and 2900), named for Frederick Wilson, who built a number of the homes there, are especially attractive. Around the holidays, Swiss Avenue is a favorite for Christmas lights cruisers. A drive-by can be done in 15 minutes; allow a half-hour if you want to stroll.
Dallas Museum of Art
Though a substantial notch below a world-class institution, this I. M. Pei-designed museum contains impressive collections of international art, especially from the Americas, Africa, and Asia and the Pacific. The Arts of the Americas section is the largest and most impressive, with valuable contributions from pre-Columbian lost civilizations of the Aztec, Maya, and Nazca peoples and Spanish colonial arts. The more limited Art of Europe gallery exhibits a handful of works by the biggies -- van Gogh, Monet, Cézanne, Gauguin, and Degas -- while the small 20th-century collection includes Picasso, Mondrian, and Giacometti, among others. The contemporary collection includes works by Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, the Texan Robert Rauschenberg, and Jasper Johns. In the Wendy & Emery Reves Collection is a curious re-creation of Coco Chanel's French summer home, complete with her collection of furnishings and paintings by French Impressionists like Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Degas. The DMA puts on interesting occasional shows, such as the recent, colorful "Day of the Dead" installation and the blockbuster "Splendors of China's Forbidden City" exhibit. In the atrium, where jazz combos play for free on Thursday evenings, hangs a gorgeous, monumental blown-glass sculpture by Dale Chihuly. A couple of hours should be sufficient, unless you're a dedicated art hound.

Tired Boutique

Patrick, Minneapolis, MN

Dealy Plaza site of JFK assasination is really very interesting. The West end is a-6 block walk with every imaginable kind of restaurant. The walk home gets a little uneasy as dsowndowen quickly turns into a deserted set of buildings on theway back to your hotel.

It's a tired hotel that is showing its wear. The restaurant/bar was the best srprise. It completely outshines the hotel Interesting menu and is a warm, spacy place to get away to from the cramped, dank rooms. Good news: it has free wireless high speed. If it doesm't work just walk down the hallway, the modem is hanging from a wire out of the ceiling if you need to re-boot the system.

Good Hotel if you are there on business

Anonymous

The Hotel Lawrence was fine for what we were in Dallas for. The staff was very nice especially the restaurant staff. The room was comfortable but could have been cleaner. It was within walking distance of everything we needed to do. However we did not understand why the entire area would close down their usually time, including the Hotel Lawrence, with the NHL Allstar game in town. Not very good business management.

best bang for your buck

Jose, Los Angeles, CA

Deep Ellem, clubs and bars are a 4 to 7 minute taxi ride away. Downtown eateries are 3 to 5 minutes away.

This hotel is in downtown dallas, very close to the business district, the room was average to small but satisfactory compared to other old hotels that have been redone. Everything is updated except for the old windows that allow significant street noise to come in. The restroom was also small but very well updated.

Nice Hotel - Bad Parking

The 6th Floor Museum about the Kennedy asassination is AMAZING! Don't miss it!

This is a wonderfully restored old hotel in downtown Dallas. Unfortunately, they have not taken into consideration how dangerous the area is and if you come to the hotel after 10:00pm, you have to park SEVERAL blocks down in a VERY bad part of town. They should think about this as they would be liable for any incident. As a business traveler and a woman, safety in a new city is VERY important. For this reason I would not go back.

There is an array of dining options in walking distance. very nice places

The Hotel Lawrence was a very nice hotel. it is being renovated so all floors are not complete. It is a small hotel with a friendly and helpful staff. Very intimate. The bathroom was very modern. the bed was comfortalbe. I had a little difficulty in adjusting the thermostat in the room. The fitness center and internet was open for use. Continental breakfast was provided and was very nice. I would definitely recommend this hotel to everyone. Many of the sites were in walking distance of the hotel.
