During your Dallas vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Nasher Sculpture Center
Despite its status as the principal art museum in a city of considerable wealth, the rather modest permanent collection of the Dallas Museum of Art is proof that either north Texans don't collect much great art or they don't donate it on a grand scale to local institutions. One notable exception to that rule is Raymond Nasher, one of the world's foremost collectors of contemporary sculpture. A local businessman, by way of New York, who made his banking and real estate fortune in Dallas (with the shopping mall NorthPark Center, among other properties), Nasher decided, after years of being wooed by the Dallas Museum of Art as well as major institutions like the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., to establish a public sculpture garden in his adopted city. The $50-million project was entirely funded by the private Nasher Foundation. The Nasher Sculpture Center opened in 2003 on a 2 1/2-acre site adjacent to the Dallas Museum of Art, in a glass-and-marble structure infused with natural light, designed by the renowned architect Renzo Piano. The center should change the way art aficionados think about Dallas and make it an art destination. The collection, which includes high-quality pieces by virtually all of the great modern masters and was amassed over 4 decades by Ray and his wife Patsy, is considered by some art experts to be the finest private sculpture collection in the world. The tasteful 54,000-square-foot center, a place of quiet refuge in downtown Dallas, features an outdoor sculpture garden landscaped by Peter Walker, with pieces from Nasher's immense collection exhibited both indoors and out. The collection includes some of the finest individual works from the likes of Pablo Picasso, Auguste Rodin, Joan Miró, David Smith, Constantin Brancusi, Henry Moore, Alberto Giacometti, Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Isamu Noguchi, Richard Serra, Mark di Suvero, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Joseph Beuys, Roy Lichtenstein, and many others. Among the monumental pieces in the open-air museum there are too many highlights to mention, though James Turrell's "skyspace" Tending (Blue), perhaps deserves special recognition as a site-specific piece commissioned for the museum. At the back of the garden, near the bathrooms, it is a walk-in box open to the sky, with optical effects and an unexpected perspective. Although the Nasher Sculpture Center -- which has some of the biggest names in art and architecture attached to it -- opened with big publicity and truly ought to be one of Dallas's most highly prized treasures, it is sadly and inexplicably having some difficulty attracting visitors, especially locals. If you're at all a fan of modern art, don't miss the opportunity to see this spectacular collection.
Trammell & Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art
This exceptionally displayed collection is the product of one of Dallas's best-known real estate developer's fascination with the arts of Japan, China, and India. The 500 pieces on display (taken from a collection of more than 7,000 objects) range from 1000 B.C. to the 20th century. The first floor is dedicated to the arts of Japan; its galleries hold Japanese scrolls and screens, as well as ceramics and bronzes. The Chinese galleries focus mostly on painting, sculpture, and decorative arts from the last Chinese empire, the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). Across a sky bridge is the third gallery, dedicated to Indian culture, with Hindu sculptures and features of Indian architecture, including a large residence facade in elaborately carved red limestone. There are also a number of sculptures from Cambodia -- a standout is the pre-Khmer 7th-century figure of Vishnu -- and Nepalese and Tibetan objets d'art. Allow an hour or two to see it all.Crow's non-Asian sculpture collection is on display at the Trammell Crow Center, located at 2001 Ross Ave. at Harwood. It includes 19th- and 20th-century French bronzes (by Rodin and Maillol) throughout the office building and in the garden.
The Studios at Las Colinas
North Texas's major movie and TV studio -- where Walker, Texas Ranger and Silkwood were filmed -- offers daily tours of its grounds, including displays of movie memorabilia and hands-on demonstrations of special effects (from that memorable blockbuster Addams Family Values) and blue-screen technology. You'll see the Oval Office set used in Oliver Stone's JFK, as well as costumes from Star Trek and Forrest Gump. If you've been to studios in Hollywood or the movie museums in other parts, you've probably seen more and better; however, if you've always wanted to visit a movie set, you'll at least get a glimpse here. Tours last about an hour and 15 minutes.

Good value, free internet

Anonymous, Atlanta, GA, 2007-03-13

Cheesecake Factory was right up the way, very walkable if you are sans car.

I appreciated the free internet, but wish it would have been wireless. I was tied to the desk the whole time. The breakfast offered was fine, staff was friendly. Only bummer was that my TV was out of whack green was red and vice versa. The room was homey though, plenty of space to spread out. Would have been good for families, as well as business travelers. The location was central to NorthPark Mall, Uptown, and Downtown. I would definitely stay there again, but hope they will add wireless internet throughout the hotel and fix the TV.

Great Place to Stay!!!

JILL, Fresno, CA, 2007-03-08

Bradford at Lincoln Park was a great hotel!! My husband and I were really shocked at how nice and BIG our hotel room was. We were also pleasantly surprised to find the Northpark Mall along with the Cheesecake Factory, a grocery store and several other shops literally a block away from the hotel. We will definitely stay at this hotel again and recommend this place to anyone traveling to Dallas.

Good for business people

Anonymous, 2007-03-04

The Continental breakfast was very good with a varity of fruit, cerals, rolls, juices and coffees. It was also very clean.

The Bradford at Lincoln Park is a good place for business trips, especiall if you need to stay for a week or so. The king suites have a small kitchen so you do not have to always go out. Me and my daughters were late checking out which to hotel knew and when we got there out king suite was a handicaped room with no tub just a shower that was easy for a wheelchair and all the counters were low. It was a great room and I am glad that the hotel had such a room, but I was tired and wanted to soak in a tub to relax. I went to the desk to see about changing rooms but there were no other rooms. Also since there were 3 of us we had to use the sleeper sofa which was terrible and I do mean terrible. The only really good thing was that we were close to the events that we had come to Dallas for. I would not stay there again. I have to say that the ladies in housekeeping were very nice helpful and kind.

Very family friendly

David, Columbus, OH, 2007-03-03

There are many restaurants in the area and all are within a very short drive.

The Bradford at Lincoln Park in Dallas was very comfortable, the suite was just the correct size for the two of us. Lots of space to be very comfortable and to be able to relax on the coach and chairs. The bedroom area was spacious and included a walkin closet with plenty of room to hang up our clothes. The bathroom was large and well lighted. The full kitchen area allowed us to fix lunch and to have snacks on hand. Also, the free breakfast in the hotel lobby each morning was outstanding. The hotel staff keeps the facility, inside and out, very clean and beautiful. The hotel is located in a very convenient area along Central Expresway, many restaurants close by, North Park Shopping Center within walking distance, and very close to Southern Methodist University. Also, we felt that our car was in a safe environment with the gated, self-parking garage attached to the hotel. We, also, enjoyed the convenience of the computer room on the first floor to be able to check our e-mail daily.

Spacious

Steven, Phoenix, AZ, 2007-02-26

The Bradford Lincoln Park suites are extremely spacious. And comfortable. The sleep sofa is a nice extra. The parking garage is convenient and there was ample parking, most of it covered. The housekeeping staff did a pretty good job although they didn't get to the rooms until mid to late afternoon. I would stay there again.

Comfortable stay

Beautiful North Point mall practically across the street from the hotel. Many good dining places close to the hotel.

The hotel was very nice and made me feel luxurious. The room was roomy and comfortable. The continental breakfast was delicious and offered a great variety. Due to the short time I was there, I was unable to enjoy the pool or the fitness center. The pool was beautiful and my room overlooked it. My only complaint, was the difficultly in finding the hotel. I was not familiar with the Dallas highways and drove past the hotel 3 times before I could figure out how to get on the correct access road. I stated my frustration to the desk clerk as I checked in, and she seemed to understand my frustration but did not offer any helpful solutions to finding the hotel. I had to ask for directions instead of being offered directions.
