During your Dallas vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Old City Park
Dallas's Old West heritage is on self-conscious display in this downtown 13-acre park of three dozen historic buildings. The complex re-creates a late-19th-century village, complete with a redbrick Main Street, Victorian homes, a log cabin dating from 1847, and Old West standards like a train depot, general store, one-room church, schoolhouse, bank (said to have been robbed by Bonnie and Clyde in the 1930s), and law offices. All have been transported from their original locations in and around Dallas, immaculately restored and reconstructed on the attractive grounds, which have the glittering city skyline as a backdrop. Guided tours escort visitors inside several of the buildings, including a "Living Farmstead," a re-creation of a North Texas farm (ca. 1860). On selected dates during the first 2 weeks of December, the village celebrates "Candlelight at Old City Park," a popular "Victorian Holiday Celebration." (Candlelight admission tickets are $3 more than regular prices.)A pretty good restaurant, Brent Place, occupies an 1876 "architecture catalogue" farmhouse (ordered by mail and shipped by rail to rural areas) and serves lunch Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 3pm; call tel. 212/421-3057 for reservations. Visitors are also allowed to picnic on the grounds. Plan to spend 1 1/2 hours or so here.
The Studios at Las Colinas
North Texas's major movie and TV studio -- where Walker, Texas Ranger and Silkwood were filmed -- offers daily tours of its grounds, including displays of movie memorabilia and hands-on demonstrations of special effects (from that memorable blockbuster Addams Family Values) and blue-screen technology. You'll see the Oval Office set used in Oliver Stone's JFK, as well as costumes from Star Trek and Forrest Gump. If you've been to studios in Hollywood or the movie museums in other parts, you've probably seen more and better; however, if you've always wanted to visit a movie set, you'll at least get a glimpse here. Tours last about an hour and 15 minutes.
Trammell & Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art
This exceptionally displayed collection is the product of one of Dallas's best-known real estate developer's fascination with the arts of Japan, China, and India. The 500 pieces on display (taken from a collection of more than 7,000 objects) range from 1000 B.C. to the 20th century. The first floor is dedicated to the arts of Japan; its galleries hold Japanese scrolls and screens, as well as ceramics and bronzes. The Chinese galleries focus mostly on painting, sculpture, and decorative arts from the last Chinese empire, the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). Across a sky bridge is the third gallery, dedicated to Indian culture, with Hindu sculptures and features of Indian architecture, including a large residence facade in elaborately carved red limestone. There are also a number of sculptures from Cambodia -- a standout is the pre-Khmer 7th-century figure of Vishnu -- and Nepalese and Tibetan objets d'art. Allow an hour or two to see it all.Crow's non-Asian sculpture collection is on display at the Trammell Crow Center, located at 2001 Ross Ave. at Harwood. It includes 19th- and 20th-century French bronzes (by Rodin and Maillol) throughout the office building and in the garden.

ELLIOT, Boston, MA, 2006-11-12

tHIS IS AN OLD HOTEL DESPERATELY IN NEED OF UPDATING. THERE IS A MUSTY AND SMOKE SMELL THAT PERMEATES THE HOTEL AND ESPECIALLY THE FLOOR THAT I WAS ON. tHE HEAT AND A/C IS CONTROLLED BY THE FRONT DESK. sO WHEN THE WEATHER GOT WARM I NEEDED THEM TO ADJIDT THE A/C AND WHEN IT GOT COOL THEY NEEDE TO ADJUST THE HEAT. OVERALL, I WAS TOTALLY DISSATISFIED WITH THE HOTEL.

Undergoing renovation

Anonymous, 2006-11-04

I needed a drive from the hotel's shuttle service to get to a drug store, which was a short drive away. Almost every amenity, including dining, requires a short drive, although the shuttle was readily available for that purpose.

The Stoneleigh Hotel will be undergoing renovation for a period of 18 months beginning in November, 2006. I stayed there one week before it closed for renovations, and it was a bit like living in a mausoleum. Few people were there and the staff was in a Friday afternoon mood. The room I finally settled on was comfortable enough, but all of the hotel's furnishings showed wear and tear. When it resumes its services in 18 months, I would be willing to try it again.

great bones

bill, Burbank, CA, 2006-10-26

The Stoneleigh is in a hip area of good restaurants and shopping. Some are within walking distance or a short ride away, mostly local stores and restaurants which is a refreshing change from national chains

The Stoneleigh is an older hotel with great bones. It is about to begin a remodeling which it needs desperately. My room was huge, clean and comfortable but needed upgrading, especially the bathroom. When finished it will be a first class property.

Badly in need of renovation

Erica, San Francisco, CA, 2006-10-11

Must have been charming in its day but my bed was as hard as a board (no spring left at all); I had no curtains in the windows; the black bathroom was extremely tired with various tiles missing/poorly patched up and the water out of the faucets should have come with a warning that it could burn you so be careful.

Dallas Classic

Thomas, 2006-09-29

If you catch a cab from Dallas Love field it's only a 13.00 fare to the Stoneleigh. Don't pay the 19 flat rate.

The Stoneleigh hotel in the Turtle creek area of Dallas is a great value..... if you are working in that area. I stay there when I do projects at the Crescent Court down the street. It is an old style hotel and some things appear wore, but the rooms are statley and clean, the staff is very friendly, and the resturant and bar provide good food, spirits and service. I stayed at over a dozen hotels traveling this summer and the Stoneleigh rates in the top three.

walk around and see the buildings. we had fun.

The Stoneleigh Hotel, delivered cold showers, leaky windowsills and the smell of decade old persistant cigarette smoke. All we can say is, bring on the renovations....please.

Comfortable, charming, old historic hotel

Diane, Boston, MA, 2006-09-02

Formal dining on site; casual dining and bar across the street.

The Stoneleigh is in need of some renovations (paint, carpet, furnature), but overall, the rooms were very comfortable, as well as the bed. Much to our surprise, we were upgraded to a suite, so we had ample room including a walk in closet and separate living area. The sofa and chair cushions were worn, but overall acceptable. I would have liked a counter around the bathroom sink. There were 2 restaurants on property, and Oak Lawn, downtown, and uptown Dallas were all within walking distance or a very short drive.
