During your Nashville vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
James K. Polk House
This modest home was where James K. Polk, the 11th president of the United States, grew up and where he lived when he began his legal and political career. Though Polk may not be as familiar a name as those of some other early presidents, he did achieve two very important goals while in office: Polk negotiated the purchase of California and settled the long-standing dispute between the United States and England over where to draw the border of the Oregon Territory. The house is filled with antiques that belonged to Polk's parents when they lived here and to Polk and his family during their time in the White House. In a separate building there is an exhibit of political and Mexican War memorabilia.
The Parthenon
Centennial Park, as the name implies, was built for the Tennessee Centennial Exposition of 1897, and this full-size replica of the Athens Parthenon was the exposition's centerpiece. The original structure was only meant to be temporary, however, and by 1921 the building, which had become a Nashville landmark, was in an advanced state of deterioration. In that year, the city undertook reconstruction of its Parthenon and by 1931 a new, permanent building stood in Centennial Park. The building now duplicates the floor plan of the original Parthenon in Greece. Inside stands the 42-foot-tall statue of Athena Parthenos, the goddess of wisdom, prudent warfare, and the arts. Newly gilded with eight pounds of gold leaf, she is the tallest indoor sculpture in the country. In addition to this impressive statue, there are original plaster castings of the famous Elgin marbles -- bas-reliefs that once decorated the pediment of the Parthenon. Down in the basement galleries of the Parthenon, you'll find an excellent collection of 19th- and 20th-century American art. The Parthenon's two pairs of bronze doors, which weigh in at 7 1/2 tons per door, are considered the largest matching bronze doors in the world. A recent renovation of the building included air conditioning, which should make for pleasant viewing on muggy summer days. Allow about 30 minutes.
Carnton Plantation
Built in 1826 by Randal McGavock, a former mayor of Nashville, Carnton Plantation is a beautiful neoclassical antebellum mansion with a Greek Revival portico. During the Battle of Franklin, one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, this plantation home served as a Confederate hospital, and today you can still see the blood stains on floors throughout the house. The interior of the stately old home is almost completely restored and houses many McGavock family pieces and other period furnishings. Two years after the battle, the McGavock family donated 2 acres of land to be used as a cemetery for Confederate soldiers who had died during the Battle of Franklin. There are almost 1,500 graves in the McGavock Confederate Cemetery, which makes this the largest private Confederate cemetery in the country.

unfriendly staff

you could tell the staff did not want to be there and they were going to make you feel the same way. The nicest employees were the maids.

close to downtown, inexpensive

Sharon, Indianapolis, IN, 2006-06-26

There is an authentic German restaurant next door with great food and beer.

The room was tidy, though the carpet was very dirty. My room had iron, and ironing board which I used and worked great. The breakfast that was available was tasty and the breakfast room was clean. My only complaint was that the hotel cleaning staff came to my room three seperate times in the morning I was supposed to check out. There was no "do not disturb" tag in the room to place on the door. So I was bothering all morning long by the staff. and when I checked out of my room at noon ( normal checkout time) the cleaning staff was hovering outside my door and rushed me out of my room so they could begin cleaning it.

Very Tourist Friendly

Anonymous, Washington, DC, 2006-04-15

Drive about two miles for downtown attractions and restaurants.

Ramada is located close to the stadium just at a little distance from Nashville downtown. The premises of the hotel are clean with pleasant spring breeze at the entrance. Though I chose a smoking room, the corridor had no stink. The room was fresh and breath taking. Bathroom was clean with fresh towels arranged neatly. Bed was comfortable. Air conditioner worked well. I must say that the TV reception was not great probably because the city has better attractions. The room was quiet at night when I visited. My room had a window with a view of stadium and nice sunshine in the morning. The staff at the hotel reception was friendly to call a cab and provide tourist information. The breakfast was good. However, I had to go to downtown for dinner in the night. Night at Nashville downtown is lively with number of restaurants that have live music performances. I happily recommend this place to a friend for its value to the money I paid.

very uncomfortable

Megan, Nashville, TN, 2006-04-05

Do not expect any comfort, showering accessories such as soap, the bed is hard, the rooms smell like a damp dog and overall run from this one

My stay at the Ramada Limited was a very uncomfortable experience. Not only was the bed hard but the room was dirty, we had no soap and when we called the desk she informed us to walk down and get some. The alarm clock did not work, the floor had not been vacuumed and the furniture was very old. The ceiling on the third level was water damaged therefore the rooms smelt damp. I would never recommend this hotel to anyone. I did like the restaurants being so close but other than that I was completely shocked what I got for the price I had paid. I have in many other instances stayed at hotels for less money and the rooms were of much better quality. Sorry but this was one of the worst that I have personally stayed in...

Good location

Robert, 2006-04-04

You're right across the river from the greatest music in the United States. Plenty of honky-tonks and restaurants.

For the price, this is a very good location close to downtown Nashville. In season, it's right across the street from the football stadium. I will be staying there again in the near future.

Good place to sleep.

Anonymous, Chicago, IL, 2006-03-19

Close to all action on 2nd Ave.

My needs were simple, a shower and a bed. I wanted to be close to the action downtown. I didn't eat at the hotel nor did I plan on spending any real time there. Shower, go out have fun, return and sleep. The room was clean, bed was comfortable and the water was hot. Room was a bit small but OK. No internet access was the one bad thing. It's not the Four Seasons but then I didn't want that. A bit pricey but it was 5 minutes away from downtown.
