During your Nashville vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art
Once a private estate, Cheekwood today has much to offer both art lovers and garden enthusiasts. The museum and gardens are situated in a 55-acre park that's divided into several formal gardens and naturally landscaped areas. The museum itself is housed in the original Cheek family mansion, which was built in the Georgian style with many architectural details brought over from Europe. Among the mansion's most outstanding features is a lapis lazuli fireplace mantel. Within the building are collections of 19th- and 20th-century American art, Worcester porcelains, antique silver serving pieces, Asian snuff bottles, and a good deal of period furniture. The grounds are designed for strolling, and there are numerous gardens, including: Japanese, herb, perennial, dogwood, magnolia, iris, peony, rose, azalea; and there are greenhouses full of orchids. Kids will enjoy romping around the grassy meadows on the museum grounds. Don't miss the glass bridge that awards hikers along the wooded sculpture trail. You'll also find a gift shop and good restaurant, The Pineapple Room, on the grounds. Allow a couple of hours to tour the museum, or up to a full day if you plan to explore the grounds and garden as well.
The Hermitage
Though you may not know it, you probably see an image of one of Nashville's most famous citizens dozens of times every week. Whose face pops up so frequently? It's Andrew Jackson, whose visage graces the $20 bill, and who is the man who built the Hermitage, a stately Southern plantation home. Jackson moved to Tennessee in 1788 and became a prosecuting attorney. He served as the state's first congressman and later as a senator and judge. However, it was during the War of 1812 that he gained his greatest public acclaim as the general who led American troops in the Battle of New Orleans. His role in that battle helped Jackson win the presidency in 1828 and again in 1832.Though the Hermitage now displays a classic Greek Revival facade, this is its third incarnation. Originally built in the Federal style in 1821, it was expanded and remodeled in 1831, and acquired its current appearance in 1836. Recordings that describe each room and section of the grounds accompany tours through the mansion and around it. In addition to the main house, you'll also visit the kitchen, the smokehouse, the garden, Jackson's tomb, an original log cabin, the spring house (a cool storage house built over a spring), and, nearby, the Old Hermitage Church and Tulip Grove mansion. You can tour the museum and grounds in a few hours.
Jack Daniel's Distillery
Old Jack Daniel (or Mr. Jack, as he was known hereabouts) didn't waste any time setting up his whiskey distillery after the Civil War came to an end. Founded in 1866, this is the oldest registered distillery in the United States and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It's still an active distillery; you can tour the facility and see how Jack Daniel's whiskey is made and learn how it gets such a distinctive earthy flavor. There are two secrets to the manufacture of Mr. Jack's famous sour-mash whiskey. The first of these is the water that comes gushing -- pure, cold, and iron-free -- from Cave Spring. The other is the sugar maple that's used to make the charcoal. In fact, it is this charcoal, through which the whiskey slowly drips, that gives Jack Daniel's its renowned smoothness. After touring the distillery, you can glance in at the office used by Mr. Jack and see the safe that did him in. Old Mr. Jack kicked that safe one day in a fit of anger and wound up getting gangrene for his troubles. One can only hope that regular doses of Tennessee sippin' whiskey helped ease the pain of his last days. If you want to take home a bottle of Jack Daniel's, they can be purchased here at the distillery, but nowhere else in this county, which is another of Tennessee's dry counties. (No tastings at the end of the tour I'm afraid.)

Good mid priced family friendly

Martha, 2006-11-15

The Alexis Inn & Suites was comfortable and clean with a large kitchen/dining area. I liked the separation of the amenities. The bed was fairly comfortable. But I did have a problem with the pillows. They are hard and you can't seem to do anything with that. I like at least one soft pillow that I can mold to my neck contours. But over all it was a good experience. Staff was very nice and helpful. Close to the airport with easy off/on to the freeway.

Not Great...

Anonymous, 2006-07-02

There's alot of construction on the roads near by, so be careful.

This hotel was NOT worth the money. I was expecting something nice. The hotel smelled horrible. The tv made a buzzing sound. The housekeeping was very loud and knocking on doors at 8:00 am Yelling "Housekeeping", and even though they were not knocking on my door, it sounded like they were.

Grad Ole Opry.

The Alexis Inn & Suites, Nashville Airport was good value for the money with a good size room. Breakfast was average, but offered no fresh fruit (other than juice). Location of hotel was good.

nasty

Can leave car for a week, free but must pay shuttle one way.

Toenail clippings on bed stand, moldy tub, horrible pillows, thin linens, fire alarm hanging by wires, bad paint, claims under renovation but no evidence of repairmen, tis place is as bad as it gets.
