During your Nashville vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art
Once a private estate, Cheekwood today has much to offer both art lovers and garden enthusiasts. The museum and gardens are situated in a 55-acre park that's divided into several formal gardens and naturally landscaped areas. The museum itself is housed in the original Cheek family mansion, which was built in the Georgian style with many architectural details brought over from Europe. Among the mansion's most outstanding features is a lapis lazuli fireplace mantel. Within the building are collections of 19th- and 20th-century American art, Worcester porcelains, antique silver serving pieces, Asian snuff bottles, and a good deal of period furniture. The grounds are designed for strolling, and there are numerous gardens, including: Japanese, herb, perennial, dogwood, magnolia, iris, peony, rose, azalea; and there are greenhouses full of orchids. Kids will enjoy romping around the grassy meadows on the museum grounds. Don't miss the glass bridge that awards hikers along the wooded sculpture trail. You'll also find a gift shop and good restaurant, The Pineapple Room, on the grounds. Allow a couple of hours to tour the museum, or up to a full day if you plan to explore the grounds and garden as well.
Opryland Hotel
Hotels aren't usually tourist attractions, but this one is an exception. With 2,883 rooms, the place is beyond big, but what makes it worth a visit are the three massive atria that form the hotel's three main courtyards. Together these atria are covered by more than 8 acres of glass to form vast greenhouses full of tropical plants. There are rushing streams, roaring waterfalls, bridges, pathways, ponds, and fountains. There are also plenty of places to stop for a drink or a meal. In the evenings, live music and a laser light show can be seen in the Cascades Atrium. The largest of the three atriums here is the Delta, which covers 4 1/2 acres and has a quarter-mile-long "river," a 110-foot-wide waterfall, an 85-foot-tall fountain, and an island modeled after the French Quarter in New Orleans. On this island are numerous shops and restaurants, which give the hotel the air of an elaborate shopping mall. You can take boat rides on the river and, at night, catch live music in a nightclub on the island. Allow 20-30 minutes.
The Tennessee State Museum
To gain an understanding of Tennessee history, stop by this modern museum in the basement of the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. The museum houses a large display of Native American artifacts from the Mississippian period. The first whites to visit this region were long hunters (named for their long hunting trips west of the Appalachian Mountains) who arrived in the 18th century. The most famous long hunter was Daniel Boone; you'll see a rifle that once belonged to him on display here. There is also a powder horn that once belonged to Davy Crockett. Other displays focus on presidents Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk, as well as Sam Houston, another Tennessean who went on to fame elsewhere. At press time, much of the museum's permanent collection was closed to the public due to the recent renovation of the convention center. Nonetheless, visitors may still view pre-Civil War artifacts including full-scale replicas of old buildings and period rooms, a log cabin, a water-driven mill, a woodworking shop, an 18th-century print shop, and an 1855 parlor. The lower level of the museum is devoted mostly to the Civil War and Reconstruction. (Visitors are advised to call ahead to see what is currently on display.) One block west on Union Street, you'll find the museum's Military Branch, which houses displays on Tennessee's military activity from the Spanish-American War through World War II. Allow 2 to 3 hours.

Bad neighborhood

Anonymous, 2006-12-30

The hotel itself was fine for the price I paid, however the location was terrible. It was only 3 miles from downtown, but it was in a very bad neighborhood. The hotel clerk told us we should not be outside the room at night. We felt so unsafe there that we did not stay a second night.

WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND

DO NOT STAY AT THE DRAKE INN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Upon checkin I was informed that I had gotten the last room. I had requested a non-smoking room. The one I got was smoking and the smell was disgusting. I had to go to the front desk to get a remote for the TV... was told by the desk clerks that they have to take them out of the rooms so they don't get stolen by the locals. The Drake charges locals a deposit to help with the theft problem. The next day I went on a tour and the tour operator asked "why are you in such a dump"..... I was informed that it was the WORST part of Nashville, there had been two murders at the Drake the month before, and was primarily used by drug dealers. I checked out the second day. Every person I encountered... from the tour company to desk clerks at the hotel that I finished my trip in had the same remarks to make about the Drake. I am VERY unhappy about this experience and will definately rethink my usage of this service in the future. In all my years of travel, I have never been to a worse establishment.

Although clean and appropriate for it's 2 star rating, this hotel is in a derelict neighbourhood opposite a housing project. The taxi driver didn't want to leave us there! It's completely inappropriate for a tourist and would be best suited to someone running from the law who nees a place that rents by the week.
