During your Nashville vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Historic Manskers Station Frontier Life Center
Tennessee's earliest pioneer history comes to life here in a reconstruction of a fort built in 1779 by Kasper Mansker and settlers whom he had led to this spot. Today, costumed interpreters who demonstrate the skills and activities of those 18th-century settlers people the fort. Cooking fires send smoke curling from the chimneys of log cabins while weavers spin wool into yarn and woodworkers build rough-hewn furniture. Throughout the year, living-history camps are held on various weekends. During these camps, costumed camp participants live in the style of the pioneers for a few days. In addition to the fort, Historic Manskers Station also includes the Bowen Plantation house. Built between 1785 and 1787, this is the oldest brick house in middle Tennessee and is furnished with 18th-century antiques. Allow 1 hour.
Carnton Plantation
Built in 1826 by Randal McGavock, a former mayor of Nashville, Carnton Plantation is a beautiful neoclassical antebellum mansion with a Greek Revival portico. During the Battle of Franklin, one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, this plantation home served as a Confederate hospital, and today you can still see the blood stains on floors throughout the house. The interior of the stately old home is almost completely restored and houses many McGavock family pieces and other period furnishings. Two years after the battle, the McGavock family donated 2 acres of land to be used as a cemetery for Confederate soldiers who had died during the Battle of Franklin. There are almost 1,500 graves in the McGavock Confederate Cemetery, which makes this the largest private Confederate cemetery in the country.
The Hermitage
Though you may not know it, you probably see an image of one of Nashville's most famous citizens dozens of times every week. Whose face pops up so frequently? It's Andrew Jackson, whose visage graces the $20 bill, and who is the man who built the Hermitage, a stately Southern plantation home. Jackson moved to Tennessee in 1788 and became a prosecuting attorney. He served as the state's first congressman and later as a senator and judge. However, it was during the War of 1812 that he gained his greatest public acclaim as the general who led American troops in the Battle of New Orleans. His role in that battle helped Jackson win the presidency in 1828 and again in 1832.Though the Hermitage now displays a classic Greek Revival facade, this is its third incarnation. Originally built in the Federal style in 1821, it was expanded and remodeled in 1831, and acquired its current appearance in 1836. Recordings that describe each room and section of the grounds accompany tours through the mansion and around it. In addition to the main house, you'll also visit the kitchen, the smokehouse, the garden, Jackson's tomb, an original log cabin, the spring house (a cool storage house built over a spring), and, nearby, the Old Hermitage Church and Tulip Grove mansion. You can tour the museum and grounds in a few hours.

Beautiful Decorations

Dale, Atlanta, GA

Many good restaurants within walking distance that are much more reasonable. Also it is possible to stay somewhere else close and walk to the resort which is what we saw many families doing.

The Christmas decorations were really great and the New Years celebration was really good. The only disappointing thing was the buffet we were directed to when we could not get in the steak house. The food was fancy but very limited in variety and very expensive ($70.00 per person) and not at all good value. That got us off to a bad start but everything was up hill from there and we enjoyed our stay.

Great Place to Stay and never want to leave

Pam, 2007-03-11

Numerous store's in the hotel and a large outlet mall next door with bus service, from door to door.

The Gaylord Opryland Hotel, was great. When we drove in and parked we didn't have to get back into our car until we were ready to go home. We love the gardens and all the different restaurants where you have a wide choice.

Very Friendly

Anonymous, 2006-10-22

A lovely mall was within a short ride, by shuttle, from the hotel.

I liked the hotel's proximity to the airport. Check in was very smooth. Every hotel employee we came in contact with was very friendly and willing to assist. We liked the room and the availability of toiletries and a blow dryer. Having a second sink and mirror separate from the bath/shower area was helpful. We appreciated access to the in-room refrigerator. The hotel shuttle services were very accessible and on time. We were able to access the city center and other attractions without having a personal vehicle.

Wonderful weekend getaway

Grand Ole Opry General Jackson Showboat Country Music Hall of Fame Ryland Auditorium Frist Center

First class treatment from the moment we boarded the hotel's shuttle at the aiport until our return. Grand Ole Opry next door, General Jackson showboat - nothing but fun. Lots of free entertainment in the hotel, too. Variety of restaurants, staff extremely friendly, room was nice, and the transportation system was excellent. The property itself is breathtaking - you really do not have to leave the Opryland complex to have a wonderful time, although we did take the shuttle to downtown Nashville one of the days. Had fun there, too -Country Music Hall of Fame, etc. I am already planning to return next labor day weekend. My daughter and I travel a lot.

Better than the best hotels in China

Holly, Pittsburgh, PA, 2006-07-23

It's a short walk (about 10 minutes) to The Grand Ole Opry, the big mall with Gibson Showcase store, Bass Pro Shops, and lots of other shops, restaurants and OmniMax Theatre. For $14.00 per person you can get round trip shuttle downtown.

The hotel was super clean. The staff was wonderful. I thought it was a good value except for the Jack Daniels in the Jack Daniels Saloon. The atrium was beautiful - plants, flowers, waterfalls, fish!! The food was excellent. The cabs have a fixed rate to and from the airport - less expensive than the hotel shuttle. The hotel had a great shuttle service to the downtown Nashville honky tonks. We had a great driver on the way downtown who was very informative. They have a shoe shine stand, although I didn't see anyone working it during our short visit. I don't see how it can improve. I will definitely go back and take friends.

Great getaway

CARRIE, 2006-07-17

Only thing I would do different is for us to have rented a car instead of relying on the hotel trasportation and taxis it would have been cheaper.

The Gaylord Opryland Resort and Hotel is something that you have to see to believe. It was beautiful all around. You can stay there and never have to leave the resort. Everything yoou need or want is within the hotel or just a short walk away. We had a great time-- this was the first time in 22 years that we took a 4 day trip alone and we will never forget it.

A must for all families!!

cathy, Indianapolis, IN, 2006-07-16

Lots of things to do on property grounds. Opry Mills shopping Mall, the Grand Ole Opry, and more!

The Opryland Hotel was wonderful in the 70s' when I was a child. I recently had the chance to go back with my kids and it was outstanding. I have never had a better hotel staff!! Wish the rooms were already rennovated. (They are in the process). Rather dated for the price you pay. Could have been cleaner in room, but Hotel Grounds could not be beat! The Relage Spa was fabulous!

Received more than I paid for!

Carol, Atlanta, GA, 2006-05-27

Grand Ole Oprey was a short hotel van ride away. The General Jackson River Cruise was also a short hotel van ride away. The Hermitage was approximately a 15 minute car ride. Vanderbilt University was a good 20 minutes away.

The room was outstanding. It had a separate sink outside the bathroom which also had a sink so that two could be getting ready at the same time. Whenever you ran into staff in the hallways, they greeted you and asked if you needed help or directions. You really did not need a car to see Nashville as they(hotel)had their own van that seemed to be going wherever we wanted to go. We only used our car to drive to the Hermitage. Nashville is a beautiful and clean city. The hotel is a vacation destination all its own. We tried one of their restaurants the first evening and decided that we probably could not do better anywhere else. We found each of the three restaurants to be excellent and in a different setting in the hotel.
