Look carefully among the gracious Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, Second Empire and Queen Anne style homes of Charleston's historic Queen Street and one discovers a quaint and comfortable bed and breakfast at number 78 called The Elliott House Inn. Like Charleston itself, The Inn is an elegant survivor of a tempestuous past. Built as a private residence in 1861, this remarkably preserved architectural treasure has weathered hurricanes, earthquakes, at least one tornado and the civil war. When and where restoration has been necessary, painstaking care has been taken to ensure architectural and historical accuracy.
Most recent user reviewsScore 5 out of 5 great get away stephanie, Cincinnati, OH Elliot House was the perfect place for my daughter and I to spend a w/e away together. Breakfast served in our room every morning made it special, the wine and cheese was a delight in the afternoon and the location was perfect walking to shop to stroll south of Broad. It also sits between two wonderful and charming restaurants. The staff was very friendly and the place was clean, despite the age, everything was in good condition and charming. The rooms are not large and the only drawback would be if you were caught on a long rainy spell...not a lot of protected common area or space in the room to spend a lot of time....but it is worth the gamble. I can't wait to return to Charleston and stay there with my husband Score 5 out of 5 Nice Getaway Anonymous, 2006-08-29 The aquarium and IMax theater are w/in a short drive. The Inn is w/in the Charleston historic area.Excellent location and a good environment. The room is probably ready for a remodeling as there was a water leak from the ac upstairs. The continental breakfast wasn't much but they gave the option of having it delivered to your room or served in the courtyard, which was nice. The courtyard was very attractive and the wine and cheese reception a very nice touch. Parking was limited to a public garage across the street which was a little expensive but very convenient. Overall, we had a very nice stay. Score 5 out of 5 Comfortable Donald, Pittsburgh, PA, 2006-06-30 Dining, history and parking were all an easy walk from the inn.The staff were very friendly and helpful. They were knowledgeable about dining and historical sites. The room was clean and comfortable. The supplied breakfasts were good but could have used more variety. Pleasant experience. Score 5 out of 5 Terrific Location, Quaint Old Inn LeDean, Durham/Raleigh, NC, 2005-12-29 Abundant antique shopping right around the corner on King st. Other shopping located right around the other corner on Meeting st. Only 3 blocks from the historic slave market. This hotel offers clean rooms in an historic property right in the heart of the historic district. Check in was very amenable and hotel staff strived to please. A very robust continental breakfeast delivered to your room at a time you specify. Complimentary wine and cheese served in the courtyard at 5pm daily. This inn was originally an old Charleston single row house that survived the earthquake in the 18780's and the effects of which can be seen to this day, consequently rooms are small but adequate. Easy walking distance to all the premier attractions that historic Charleston has to offer. No on site parking available but a city parking garage is located direclty across the street. No on site dining but two of Charlestons best known restaraunts, 82 Queen St. (don't miss the she crab soup) and Poogan's Porch, are located on either side and adjacent to the Inn. My wife and I will stay here again. Score 4 out of 5 Nice price with the discount. Anonymous, New York, NY, 2005-11-11 Good location. The rooms with Queen beds are veryyyyy small with no room for storage. You must learn to live out of your suit cases. Also, musty room smells. If you can't take the smell you can't stay. For a discounted price the place is worth it, but know what you are getting first!!! Score 4 out of 5 Excellent Location Anonymous, 2005-11-10 Poogan's Porch next door is a great place for lunch. Excellent food at a reasonable price. If you take a ghost tour, you will learn that the second floor ladies room in this eatery is said to be haunted. This somewhat intimate Inn has a charming outdoor courtyard where you can enjoy a continental breakfast to start your day. The queen size bed was comfortable but the room small and dark. I had a confirmed reservation for a king size bed but was informed at check-in that they only had a queen available. To add insult to injury, I was still charged the higher king size room rate ($10 per night more than a standard queen). Public parking is directly across the street at a cost of $13 per day. The thing I was most satisfied with was the location. The location is central offering an a easy walk to almost anywhere in the historic district. On balance I would say the Elliott House Inn is a good value but not the place to stay if amenities are important to you. |
