During your Portland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI)
Located on the east bank of the Willamette River across from the south end of Waterfront Park, this modern science museum has six huge halls, and both kids and adults find the exhibits fun and fascinating. This is a hands-on museum, and everyone is urged to get involved with displays, from a discovery space for toddlers to physics and chemistry labs for older children. Simulated earthquakes and tornadoes are perennial favorites. There's plenty of pure entertainment at an OMNIMAX theater and the Murdock Sky Theater, which features laser-light shows and astronomy presentations. The USS Blueback submarine (used in the film The Hunt for Red October) is docked here, and tours are given daily.Between mid-June and late September, Samtrak (tel. 503/653-2380), a small open-air train, runs between OMSI and Oaks Park Amusement Center. OMSI is also the departure point for several different boat cruises up and down the Willamette River.
Japanese Garden
Considered the finest example of a Japanese garden in North America, Portland's Japanese Garden is one of the city's most popular attractions. Don't miss it. Not only are there five different styles of Japanese gardens scattered over 5 1/2 acres, but there's also a view of volcanic Mount Hood, which has a strong resemblance to Mount Fuji. While Japanese gardens are traditionally not designed with colorful floral displays in mind, this garden definitely has its seasonal highlights. In early spring there are the cherry trees, in midspring there are the azaleas, in late spring a huge wisteria bursts into bloom, and in early summer, huge Japanese irises color the banks of a pond. Among the gardens, there's a beautiful and very realistic waterfall. This is a very tranquil spot and is even more peaceful on rainy days when the crowds stay away, so don't pass up a visit just because it's raining. Also, on the third Saturday of each of the summer months, there's a demonstration of the Japanese tea ceremony in the garden's tea house. There are also many special events held here throughout the year (ikebana, bonsai, Japanese-inspired art).
International Rose Test Garden
Covering 4 1/2 acres of hillside in the West Hills above downtown Portland, these are among the largest and oldest rose test gardens in the United States and are the only city-maintained test gardens to bestow awards on each year's best roses. The gardens were established in 1917 by the American Rose Society and are used as a testing ground for new varieties of roses. Though you will likely see some familiar roses in the Gold Medal Garden, most of the 400 varieties on display here are new hybrids being tested before marketing. Among the roses in bloom from late spring to early winter, you'll find a separate garden of miniature roses. There's also a Shakespeare Garden that includes flowers mentioned in the Bard's works. After seeing these acres of roses, you'll understand why Portland is known as the City of Roses and why the Rose Festival in June is the city's biggest annual celebration. The small Rose Garden Store (tel. 503/227-7033), is packed with rose-inspired products.

Not very family friendly

Sherry, Orlando, FL, 2006-09-28

It was close to the airport.

The Shilo room was great, very clean and lots of room. My 18month son really loved that. It had a great dinning area and the restaurant room service was excellent. The only thing that was rather disappointing was the accomadations for my baby. They brought in a dirty pack-n-play with crumbs of food inside the bed and didn't even bother to assemble it. I had them replace it with another pack-n-play and the hotel staff couldn't even put it together and left the room so we ended up putting it together. They didn't even bring any blankets for my son but thankfully I packed blankets from home. The bathroom door knob came off during the stay so they offered to move us to a different room but we declined so my husband managed to get the door knob back together. I feel that the hotel staff service was very disappointing for the price of this hotel.

great hotel, great location

Claire, West Palm Beach, FL, 2006-08-08

Salty's is a great restaurant just a short drive from the hotel.

This was a terrific experience. We had been in Redmond, Oregon for a meeting, and had a few days to spend before our return flight to Rochester,NY. The room was meticulous, the bed was extremely comfortable, and the staff was very helpful. We took the hotel shuttle to the airport to access the light rail line to downtown Portland. It was wonderful. Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel for anyone staying in the Portland area.

Very Good

JOY, Portland, OR, 2006-05-02

Vancouver mall is only about 2 miles away

The only bad part about my stay was the pool and hot was closed for repairs. If I knew that I would have stayed at a other hotel
