During your Portland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Oregon History Center
In the middle of the 19th century, the Oregon Territory was a land of promise and plenty. Thousands of hardy individuals set out along the Oregon Trail, crossing a vast and rugged country to reach the fertile valleys of this region. Others came by ship around the Horn. Today the state of Oregon is still luring immigrants, and those who wish to learn about the people who discovered Oregon before them should visit this well-designed museum.Oregon history from before the arrival of the first Europeans to well into the 20th century is chronicled in fascinating educational exhibits. The displays incorporate Native American artifacts, a covered wagon, nautical and surveying instruments, and contemporary objects such as snow skis, dolls, and bicycles. Museum docents, with roots stretching back to the days of the Oregon Trail, are often on hand to answer questions. There's also a research library that includes many journals from early pioneers. You can't miss this complex--look for the eight-story-high trompe l'oeil mural stretching across the front.
Pearson Air Museum
A very different piece of history is preserved at this small air museum on the far side of Fort Vancouver from Officers' Row. This airfield was established in 1905, making it the oldest operating airfield in the United States. Dozens of vintage aircraft, including several World War I-era biplanes are on display. In August, the museum has a biplane fly-in.
Fort Vancouver National Historic Site
It was here in Vancouver, at the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) Fort Vancouver, that much of the Northwest's important early pioneer history unfolded. The HBC, a British company, came to the Northwest in search of furs, and for most of the first half of the 19th century it was the only authority in this remote region. Fur trappers, mountain men, missionaries, explorers, and settlers all made Fort Vancouver their first stop in Oregon country. Today Fort Vancouver houses several reconstructed buildings that are furnished as they might have been in the middle of the 19th century. In summer, there are costumed interpreters on hand giving demonstrations of activities that once took place here at the fort. Outside the fort is a large formal garden.

My review of Red Lion Hotel Portland Convention Center

Timothy, Dallas, TX, 2007-02-08

The river front area is just a few miles away.

It was a little difficult finding the hotel, but once I did it was convenient to park in the garage below. It is close to the convention center, but a short distance to the city center.

Friendly staff, but hotel atmosphere needs to be updated.

Anonymous, 2007-02-06

There is a restaurant located inside the hotel.

The Red Lion was not what I had expected. The staff was wonderful, but the appearance of our room was not to our liking. It was outdated, small. This is the first hotel I have stayed in that had a fan instead of an air conditioner.

Nice room and location,but noisey

Kerrie, Portland, OR, 2006-11-05

Llold Center Shopping Center within five blocks, and also free tram five minutes into downtown Portland.

The quality of the room was above average. With the light-rail made it easy to get down- town, it also made alot of noise too early in the morning. In fact with two busy streets running parallel to the hotel, made it noisey all day, and I was there on a weekend

Bad Service Bad Experience

Brandon, 2006-09-24

Lloyd center near by. Good shopping.

The Red Lion in Portland was a big mistake! The room was very small and stuffy. After we ordered some expensive room service we received cold, gross food. We then bought some micro brew beer to enjoy in our room. We were told by the hotel staff they didn't have a bottle opener we could use nor would they find us one. We also were told we don't have a pool! What kind of hotel does not have a pool. The staff acted as if they were doing us a favor by letting us stay...... Very bad first time experience with this hotel.

OK, but better options are available

Anonymous, Sacramento, CA, 2006-09-21

The hotel's check-in staff was slow in acknowledging my presence at the front desk. My credit card was not returned to me after processing. I had to return to the desk to retreive the card. TV reception was average at best. In taking into account the rate and general lack of attention to detail. I would option for another hotel in the future.
