During your Portland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
American Advertising Museum
Like it or not, advertising is here to stay. In this small museum, you'll learn about its history, from the 1700s to the present, through displays on historic advertisements, celebrities, and jingles. Tapes of old TV commercials provide a popular trip down memory lane. Lots of 20th-century advertising icons are on display, and the most influential ads of the past century are chronicled in detail. Definitely a fun and unusual little museum.
International Rose Test Garden
Covering 4 1/2 acres of hillside in the West Hills above downtown Portland, these are among the largest and oldest rose test gardens in the United States and are the only city-maintained test gardens to bestow awards on each year's best roses. The gardens were established in 1917 by the American Rose Society and are used as a testing ground for new varieties of roses. Though you will likely see some familiar roses in the Gold Medal Garden, most of the 400 varieties on display here are new hybrids being tested before marketing. Among the roses in bloom from late spring to early winter, you'll find a separate garden of miniature roses. There's also a Shakespeare Garden that includes flowers mentioned in the Bard's works. After seeing these acres of roses, you'll understand why Portland is known as the City of Roses and why the Rose Festival in June is the city's biggest annual celebration. The small Rose Garden Store (tel. 503/227-7033), is packed with rose-inspired products.
The Grotto--National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother
Although this forested 62-acre sanctuary is first and foremost a Catholic religious shrine (with a marble replica of Michelangelo's Pietà set in a shallow rock cave at the foot of a cliff), the gardens are quite beautiful. The gardens are at their best in the early summer and during the Christmas season when the grounds are decorated with thousands of lights and a choral festival is held. An elevator ride to the top of the bluff offers panoramic views of the Cascade Range, the Columbia River, and Mount St. Helens. There are also a couple of chapels on the grounds, a gift shop, and a coffee shop. The Grotto is open to visitors of all faiths.

Nice and friendly hotel

Anonymous, Pittsburgh, PA, 2006-10-29

1. University of Portland is a short walk. The street through it is filled with trees and is a lovely place to sit. 2. Powell's Bookstore is a longer walk...but worth it!! 3. The entire area is walkable and safe.

The Travelodge Portland City Center was a nice, clean and very friendly hotel. The frontdesk staff were so helpful with my getting around the city!! They made my trip so much more enjoyable!! Had I not talked with them, I would have stayed in my hotel room the entire stay! Instead, I enjoyed the city of Portland, which was just across the bridge. I could walk there, and I did, both evenings I was there. I enjoyed the area around University of Portland best. The location is great. The hotel room had a mini refridgerator, which I liked and used. The shower was good and the bed was comfortable.

convenient location

It was a short drive to the Rose Garden where our event took place. Close to China Town where we enjoyed a wonderful dinner.

The Travel Lodge Portland City Center was very comfortable and convenient to our location. The room was clean with two king size beds. The hotel is downtown Portland so it has lots to see all around within walking distance. The people were very pleasant and helpful which always makes for a great stay.

inexpensive for downtown portland

alisha, Spokane, WA, 2006-03-10

get the downtown transit map. The lightrail is easy to take and you don't have to pay for parking.

The Travel Lodge in dowtown Portland was a good value. The staff at this motel was very helpful. This hotel is in a great location, however, because it is affordable there are a lot of guest who live in the motel. The bar downstairs was a kick but it did not feel altogether safe for a single girl alone. The internet acces was a pain, I could not get it to work. The rooms were bare bones and could have been cleaner, but the staff was willing to do anything they could to help. overall, the motel was a great deal for downtown Portland and that probably outweighs the other detractions if value is what you are looking for.

Front desk staff very professional

Tami, Springfield, IL, 2005-10-30

Several nice bars not far from hotel

The Front desk staff that helped me get the room we wanted was very helpful, I noticed a problem on the confirmation and called the hotel to ask that it be changed (Non-Smoking to Smoking) and he had already taken care of it. Very personable

Noisy and out of control

Anonymous, Los Angeles, CA, 2005-10-03

Most major attractions are 20 minutes walking distance, but if it rain as it did, it turns into a get wet for sure.

Maybe it is policy to fill or offer the worst rooms first: next to a major freeway(about 50 meters and close to a busy local street)...this is what happened to me this time. They had more than half the rooms empty: about 3 cars parked I could have been offered a quieter room away from the street. Inside the room I found 2 details that diminished comfort further;First the TV was too far from the television and the a/c unit would stop at a certain tempeture and would not go on again for hours during the night(I was hot) even though I tried to make it go on again. Second, the room chairs sloped forward keeping you in a state tension. To tell you in summary, I had booked the Motel for three days, but left after the first night. I was happy though, that I had the flexibility to check out for only one night and was charge for only one day! I had stayed at the Days Inn in the same city(in June) and found it superior in comfort.

Dump

Patricia, San Francisco, CA, 2005-08-19

The shower spewed rusty water and had no pressure, the toilet wasn't connected to the floor. The ceiling had plaster patches with no paint. There were cigarette burns in the furniture. The neighborhood was so bad I worried about the car all night as I listened to a steady stream of sirens. Our next two nights in Portland were at the Doubletree.

My review of Portland/City Center Travelodge

Anonymous, Seattle, WA, 2005-07-25

Travelodge Downtown Portland, Or was just an average place to stay. We did have a refrig and a microwave, and a safe was available. The room was on the small side, but adequate. We also had a sliding glass door on the outside of our room that led to a small balcony, that was nice. The checkin lady was very helpful. We didn't have a data port on our phone, so that was a minus.

Easy access to downtown

Anonymous, 2005-07-17

The staff of this hotel is great and helpful with directions, maps, etc. It's also very close to downtown via 4th Ave. Our room was dark and some of the lights didn't work, but it was clean.
