During your Portland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Oaks Park Amusement Center
What would summer be without the screams of happy thrill-seekers risking their lives on a roller coaster? Pretty boring, right? Just ask the kids. They'll tell you that the real Portland excitement is at Oaks Park. Covering more than 44 acres, this amusement park first opened in 1905 to coincide with the Lewis and Clark Exposition. Beneath the shady oaks for which the park is named, you'll find waterfront picnic sites, miniature golf, music, and plenty of thrilling rides. The largest wood-floored roller-skating rink in the west and an organist still plays the Wurlitzer for the skaters.
Pittock Mansion
At nearly the highest point in the West Hills, 1,000 feet above sea level, stands the most impressive mansion in Portland. Once slated to be torn down to make way for new housing, this grand château, built by the founder of Portland's Oregonian newspaper, is fully restored and open to the public. Built in 1914 in a French Renaissance style, the mansion featured many innovations, including a built-in vacuum system and amazing multiple shower heads in the baths. Today it's furnished with 18th- and 19th-century antiques, much as it might have been at the time the Pittocks occupied the building. With an expansive view over the city to the Cascade Range, the lawns surrounding the mansion are a great spot for a picnic. You can also access Forest Park's Wildwood Trail from here.
Oregon History Center
In the middle of the 19th century, the Oregon Territory was a land of promise and plenty. Thousands of hardy individuals set out along the Oregon Trail, crossing a vast and rugged country to reach the fertile valleys of this region. Others came by ship around the Horn. Today the state of Oregon is still luring immigrants, and those who wish to learn about the people who discovered Oregon before them should visit this well-designed museum.Oregon history from before the arrival of the first Europeans to well into the 20th century is chronicled in fascinating educational exhibits. The displays incorporate Native American artifacts, a covered wagon, nautical and surveying instruments, and contemporary objects such as snow skis, dolls, and bicycles. Museum docents, with roots stretching back to the days of the Oregon Trail, are often on hand to answer questions. There's also a research library that includes many journals from early pioneers. You can't miss this complex--look for the eight-story-high trompe l'oeil mural stretching across the front.

Average hotel in great location

Anonymous, San Francisco, CA

The Paramount hotel is located in the heart of Portland. Not only does it have a good sushi restaurant but close by are other nice restaurants and bars. The hotel itself is fine but nothing special. Reminds me of the rooms and atmosphere of such chains as the Marriot. If this is what you are looking for then this is a good choice. I was hoping to have a more unique experience. No real complaints but nothing particularly great either

only one small gripe

Anonymous, 2007-02-23

The only issue I had was a pretty significant amount of mold between the tiles in the shower. That may be a bigger deal to me than most, as I am allergic to mold. Other than that, everything was excellent. The room was otherwise spotless. Great downtown location. I really enjoyed the food at the Dragonfish Asian Cafe downstairs, although the rest of my family did not like it as much. The drinks were spectacular.

Excellent Service

Anonymous, Philadelphia, PA, 2006-07-14

Use the light rail to find good restaurants.

The Paramount Hotel in Portland is very well located and the service is beyond excellent. The service starts at the front door with helpful and informed attendents that appear to be much more than car valets. The staff can and will answer most calls and can easily respond to requests. The location is terrific. It is in the region of Portland that has free service on their extensive light rail service. You can take the light rail or walk to the trendy brewery district and by car you can hope onto an array of streets to get to the coast or other interesting parts of Portland. The hotel itself is clean and modern. The only thing missing was a pool, this was only a problem for my 8 year old daughter. The hotel is very clean and modern.

Pretentious staff

MICHAEL, San Francisco, CA, 2006-05-29

Many shops nearby. The sidewalks roll up after 7PM, however, and you are lucky to see anyone walking around.

The Paramount Hotel was very comfortable, convenient to shopping and restaurants in downtown Portland. One pretentious staff member can ruin a visit, however. We arrived at noon and were told by a very snobbish male staff member that we would have to come back at 3PM before we could check in. I have stayed in many hotels and rarely have I found that they strictly adhere to their checkin time. If a room is ready, they will usually let you have it. The hotel did not appear very busy at all, with no-one in the restaurant, bar or lobby. We went for lunch and did a little shopping, arriving back at the hotel at 3PM. This same individual rolls his eyes and says, Yes, now you can check in! like he is doing us a big favor. After this experience, I give the hotel a big OK!

Centrally Located

Jennifer, Eugene, OR, 2005-12-19

Our favorite restaurant was just a block away. We could see the front of the building from our front door, which is helpful in a snow storm. There is a coffee shop across the street where we started our day.

The Paramount Hotel is centrally located in downtown Portland. This was especially valuable during a recent major ice/snow storm. With the city at a stand still, everything we needed was within a short walking distance. The rooms were comfortable and quite. The check in and out times longer than at most hotels so that we didn't feel rushed.

Easy Downtown Hotel

Anonymous, Oakland, CA, 2005-12-16

Careful the entrance to Downtown. You must stay to your right when coming from the Airport (I5 East).

Great location in the Center of Town. Walk or Cab to nearly everything from Dance Clubs to Shopping Centers. 10 minutes (by cab) to the Pearl District. The rooms was nicely equipped with 2 queen size beds. WiFi internet helped solve a business emergency and the breakfast was above normal. Good Value for weekday boutique stay.

My review of Paramount-A Coast Hotel

Anonymous, Denver, CO, 2005-09-23

There's a Starbucks right outside the front door!

The fitness center leaves something to be desired. One weight machine that is old and tries to perform 30 different exercises (not effective). There were 2 treadmills (one was out of order), 1 bike and 1 stairclimber. If you only need cardio, you might be able to get away with it, as long as you go on an off time. Needs an update!!!

Great Location!

Anonymous, Seattle, WA, 2005-09-22

Great Farmers Market in the park behind the hotel...every Wed.

I stay here every time I'm in town. It is in a great location; short walk to shopping, dining and the Metro!
