During your Portland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
International Rose Test Garden
Covering 4 1/2 acres of hillside in the West Hills above downtown Portland, these are among the largest and oldest rose test gardens in the United States and are the only city-maintained test gardens to bestow awards on each year's best roses. The gardens were established in 1917 by the American Rose Society and are used as a testing ground for new varieties of roses. Though you will likely see some familiar roses in the Gold Medal Garden, most of the 400 varieties on display here are new hybrids being tested before marketing. Among the roses in bloom from late spring to early winter, you'll find a separate garden of miniature roses. There's also a Shakespeare Garden that includes flowers mentioned in the Bard's works. After seeing these acres of roses, you'll understand why Portland is known as the City of Roses and why the Rose Festival in June is the city's biggest annual celebration. The small Rose Garden Store (tel. 503/227-7033), is packed with rose-inspired products.
Oregon History Center
In the middle of the 19th century, the Oregon Territory was a land of promise and plenty. Thousands of hardy individuals set out along the Oregon Trail, crossing a vast and rugged country to reach the fertile valleys of this region. Others came by ship around the Horn. Today the state of Oregon is still luring immigrants, and those who wish to learn about the people who discovered Oregon before them should visit this well-designed museum.Oregon history from before the arrival of the first Europeans to well into the 20th century is chronicled in fascinating educational exhibits. The displays incorporate Native American artifacts, a covered wagon, nautical and surveying instruments, and contemporary objects such as snow skis, dolls, and bicycles. Museum docents, with roots stretching back to the days of the Oregon Trail, are often on hand to answer questions. There's also a research library that includes many journals from early pioneers. You can't miss this complex--look for the eight-story-high trompe l'oeil mural stretching across the front.
Elk Rock Garden of the Bishop's Close
Set on a steep hillside above the Willamette River between Portland and Lake Oswego, this was once a private garden but was donated to the local Episcopal bishop of Oregon on the condition that it be opened to the public. The mature gardens are at their best through the spring and early summer. There's also an excellent view of Mount Hood from the grounds.

Great alternative option downtown

Will, San Francisco, CA, 2006-10-04

The nearby Pearl district, filled with unique shops and cafes, makes for an excellent post-lunch walk.

The Vintage Plaza has done a great job transforming an older hotel into a comfortable place with a newer feel. Thew location could not be better and the Pazzo restaurant offers delicios traditional as well as inventive Northern Italian cuisine. The starlight rooms with their exansive 45 degree windows are particularly noteworthy, though one needs to be aware of vibrations from the building exhaust system since you are on the top floor of the hotel.

Cvilized and Artistic

Edwin, Kinston, NC, 2006-09-05

Lots of coffee shops. We drove to restaurants and to sightsee, all very convenient to the hotel which had valet parking.

The Vintage Plaza in Portland was conveniently located in a safe downtown area. Coffee shops and drug stores were in easy walking distance. The civilized and aristic environment of the well-decorated and quiet hotel with an exceptionally friendly and helpful staff really made our trip so very enjoyable. My wife and I were very pleased to see that the hotel is dog friendly. Yes, we would highly recommend the Vintage Plaza Kimpton Hotel on Broadway in Portland, OR.

Too small of room for comfort

Anonymous, 2006-06-09

Theres is a good restaurnt right next to the hotel.

I have traveled to Porland for business the last 5 years and have never stay at this particular hotel. I decide to try it at my recent visit to Portland. I find the hotel room too small for the price they charge. Hotel elevator take forever to serve. Very little work table for the business traveler and internet bridge did not work in the room and have to replace twice.

European luxury in the heart of downtown Portland

karen, Eugene, OR, 2005-12-10

Everything is within walking distance. This is the heart of downtown

Warm, intimate atmosphere. The staff was very personable and professional. Holiday decorations were classy and understated. Evening wine tasting by the fire in the lobby was a very nice touch. The rooms were beautifully decorated and the bathroom was remarkably spacious. I would highly recommend this hotel and hope to return soon.
