During your Portland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
World Forestry Center Museum
Although Oregon depends less and less on the timber industry with each passing year, the World Forestry Center Museum is still busy educating visitors about the importance of our forest resources. Step inside the huge wooden main hall and you come face to bark with a very large and very lifelike tree. Press a button at its base and it tells you the story of how trees live and grow. In other rooms you can see exhibits on forests of the world, old-growth trees, a petrified wood exhibit, and a rain forest exhibit developed by the Smithsonian Institution. There are also interesting temporary exhibits staged here throughout the year, from photographic exhibits to displays of the woodworker's art.
Fort Vancouver National Historic Site
It was here in Vancouver, at the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) Fort Vancouver, that much of the Northwest's important early pioneer history unfolded. The HBC, a British company, came to the Northwest in search of furs, and for most of the first half of the 19th century it was the only authority in this remote region. Fur trappers, mountain men, missionaries, explorers, and settlers all made Fort Vancouver their first stop in Oregon country. Today Fort Vancouver houses several reconstructed buildings that are furnished as they might have been in the middle of the 19th century. In summer, there are costumed interpreters on hand giving demonstrations of activities that once took place here at the fort. Outside the fort is a large formal garden.
The Berry Botanic Garden
Originally founded as a private garden, the Berry Botanic Garden is now one of Portland's favorite public gardens. Among the highlights is a large, forestlike collection of mature rhododendron shrubs. There's also a native plant trail, a fern garden, and rock gardens with unusual plants. The garden is open by reservation only.

Good value

The staff was generally friendly and helpful. The rooms were spacious but no microwave was in the room. One was downstairs for use. There was no kitchen equipment even though there was a stove and refridgerator in the room. The computer for the guests was broken and it would have been useful to have use of a computer while staying there. The breakfast was nice with a variety of choices.

Nice room

Anonymous, Philadelphia, PA, 2006-12-31

Airport has shuttle service.

I liked having 2 rooms. The guy at check-in was very friendly. Even to my children. They even had breakfast available at 5 o'clock in the morning.

Friendly staff, but dirty and rundown.

Lauren, Springfield, IL, 2006-08-25

The Best Value Inn had a very friendly staff. They had a shuttle to and from the airport. But since we arrived late, the shuttle was no longer running and we had to take a taxi. The hotel reimbursed us for the taxi. But they were able to take us back to the rental car area in the morning. The problem with the hotel is that it was very rundown and dirty. It was a large two bed room, with a kitchenette, but seemed as if it had not been updated in decades. Again, the staff was very nice and helpful.

My review of Best Value Inn and Suites Portland

Tina, Eugene, OR, 2006-07-23

Absolutely nothing nearby.

No elevator! Parking lot gets full so you have to park behind others in a small, dark underground lot. I came in after midnight to a slightly scary neighborhood and there was no safe-seeming way into the hotel. The front drive comes up to 12 steps up to the lobby. My room was on the second floor and there was not elevator. I was at the end of a long trip and was not a happy camper. The front desk person did take my suitcase upstairs. This is a suites hotel, so there was a separatee bedroom as well as a fold-out sofa in the living room and a pullman kitchenette. The bed was very hard but there was lots of closet space. The TV had HGTV on it so that made things easier. I can see this set-up working for a family with more limited means as it's close to Portland International Raceway which has lots of regional visitors. I guess the most important thing is that the air conditioning worked well as it was the hottest weekend on record in Portland.

What a great deal!

Carol, Portland, OR, 2006-07-21

Next time I will take plates, silverware, and some cooking implements. While they had a kitchenette, they did not stock it.

I found this experience to be just fine. I had not one but two rooms including a kitchenette area. For the price, it was unbeatable. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Location very convenient

Patti, Bend, OR, 2006-07-20

The airport is very near and the park and ride was reasonably priced.

The hotel rooms were clean but the check in desk and counter behind the desk was very cluttered and unorganized. The staff was somewhat friendly but not as friendly as they could be. Their shuttle service is basically out of comission and they paid a taxi service to take us to and from the airport. The park and fly service was very helpful in leaving our vehicle behind for the week. They have a very nice continental breakfast which I would hightly recommend.
