During your Portland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Oregon Zoo
Perhaps best known for its elephants, the Oregon Zoo has the largest breeding herd of elephants in captivity. However, in recent years, the zoo has been continually adding new exhibits and has been branching out beyond the world of pachyderms. The Africa exhibit, which includes a very lifelike rain forest and a savanna populated by zebras, rhinos, giraffes, hippos, and other animals, is one of the most true-to-life habitats you'll ever see at a zoo. Equally impressive is the Alaskan tundra exhibit, with grizzly bears, wolves, and musk oxen. The Cascade Crest exhibit includes mountain goat habitat, and in the Steller Cove exhibit, you can watch the antics of Steller sea lions and sea otters. Also, don't miss the bat house. At press time, there were plans to open a new Amazon Flooded Forest exhibit in late 2001.In the summer, there are outdoor concerts in the zoo's amphitheater; admission prices vary.
Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI)
Located on the east bank of the Willamette River across from the south end of Waterfront Park, this modern science museum has six huge halls, and both kids and adults find the exhibits fun and fascinating. This is a hands-on museum, and everyone is urged to get involved with displays, from a discovery space for toddlers to physics and chemistry labs for older children. Simulated earthquakes and tornadoes are perennial favorites. There's plenty of pure entertainment at an OMNIMAX theater and the Murdock Sky Theater, which features laser-light shows and astronomy presentations. The USS Blueback submarine (used in the film The Hunt for Red October) is docked here, and tours are given daily.Between mid-June and late September, Samtrak (tel. 503/653-2380), a small open-air train, runs between OMSI and Oaks Park Amusement Center. OMSI is also the departure point for several different boat cruises up and down the Willamette River.
Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA)
The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA) was created as a resource for exploring and supporting experimental art and new music in Portland. Here, at the Institute's gallery facility, PICA presents visual art exhibitions focusing on contemporary trends in the regional, national, and international art scene. These exhibitions are always innovative and thought-provoking. At various venues around the city, PICA hosts performances by both well-known and less-established performance artists and musicians.

~~~Loved the stay~~~
kayla, Idaho Falls, ID
The Doug Fir Restraunt was a good place to eat and just to kick back and have a couple of drinks. The staff was great and the price of the items was perfect,not to expensive..
The Juniper Hotel was a very excellent choice for me....Close to downtown,clean,and very hip,the rooms are small but if it is just one or two people it is perfect.I loved the theme of the hotel I enjoyed it and would stay again.Parking is limited and you also have to pay for parking.
Horrible
David, San Francisco, CA, 2007-02-10
The neighborhoods is at least close to some dingy strip clubs. I'm sure you could get nice and mugged after going to one.
The hotel is a growth on the night club next to the hotel. I was told the property was bought for the night club, the hotel part is an after thought and it showed. Nasty hallways, cheezy red lights, disgusting rooms, horrible beds, no hot water just for starters. Least they put new condoms on the night stand. Avoid this place at all costs.
Very funky and very professional
Michelle, 2007-02-10
Check out Le Pigeon, an outstanding restaurant just a block away from the Jupiter Hotel. The food and service are great, but since the place is small, the wait can be very long. We put our name on the list, went to a bar for drinks, and came back later
My fiance and I were drawn to the ultra-modern decor of the Jupiter Hotel and the modest prices. This was by far the funkiest hotel we've ever stayed in (i.e., think bright blue, furry pillows, chalk to decorate / personalize your door, and a welcome condom near the bed). Don't be put off by the hipster staff-- we found everyone to be courteous, professional, and helpful in recommending nearby restaurants and helping us find a rental car. The location is great, too - just a 10-15 minute walk to downtown Portland (it's an easy walk, but there are taxis nearby as well). The hotel restaurant and bar, The Doug Fir, offered quick service and good quality, low-cost brunch (compared to NYC prices) in a cozy, log cabin setting. This is NOT a family hotel, as the rooms are small and the place can get a little noisy with the bar scene, but if you're looking for good value, convenience, and a fun, rock 'n roll atmosphere, look no further than the Jupiter.
Awesom!
Cool little Chinese place that serves burgers.
Although I had a little problem with my room the hotel staff are amazing and will do whatever they can do to help you.
Party in Portland
Scott, Kansas City, MO, 2006-11-14
The Jupiter is very centrally located. It was easy to get anywhere in or out of the city from the Burnside Street location.
The achingly hip Jupiter Hotel is perfect for a getaway weekend in Portland. An all white and charcoal grey color scheme is punctuated with blue lighting. A nice touch, the chalk board room doors allow fun and quirky "messages" for all to see. We knew we were in the right place once we spied the complimentary, hotel-branded condom on the night table. No luxury here and the walls are paper thin but the staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. The Doug Fir Restaurant-Bar-Lounge-Club is definately the highlight of this property. We enjoyed breakfast, lunch, happy hour, dinner and late night drinks here. In fact we could have spent our entire vacation inside the Doug Fir, it's that cool.
Fun and hip
Anonymous, Seattle, WA, 2006-11-11
Lots of trendy shops, concert venues and diner-type places to eat within a few blocks.
We enjoyed our stay at the Jupiter Hotel. The decor was ultra-modern and provided a fun atmosphere. Great, reasonably-priced food at the Doug Fir. The rooms were small, but clean and comfortable. We stayed right above the lounge on a Friday night and it was a bit noisy, they did provide earplugs though.
Family Warning: This is an Hipster Party Hotel
Karen, 2006-10-28
They provide ear plugs. You may need them. DO NOT miss breakfast at the restaurant! Which is served until 3pm.
The front desk acts like they're a little too cool for school. But it's easy to overlook, the rest of the staff is great. The rooms are really fun for a few nights, they're really clean and look cool, but not the best use of space (A luggage rack would probably be all you needed to fix it.) The doors are chalk boards and they provide chalk! The perfect hotel for a few nights of fun in Portland. The restaurant attached (Doug Fir) is absolutely amazing and the real reason why we would go back. A really cool staff, delicious gourmet food, strong cocktails and surprisingly low prices! Plus there's a cool lounge below that has shows most nights. PARENTS BE WARNED: this is not a family hotel. We saw a bunch of families checking in for the weekend, which seems disasterous. It's definitely a party spot, very LOUD (your heater/air conditioner drowns out most of the noise) with lots of great music. However, drunk band members stumbling in front of your door at 3am might not be the sort of educational experience you want for your kids.
Review
tobias, Los Angeles, CA, 2006-10-04
Not a bad place, but not great either. Once you are in the room though, there is nothing special about it. Not particularly comfortable, no coffee machine (I've never stayed at /any/ motel without one before; definitely a big negative), shower faucet broken and hard to get water temperature right. Does have excellent internet connection though. A lot of noise from the night club and outside fire-place seating until the early hours of the morning. This is fine if you are taking part in the social life, but if not is a bit too loud for sleep. Earplugs are provided, but even so the noise seeps through. Restaurant was fine; food good and staff pleasant. Prices are reasonable. All in all, not comfortable, but not a bad stay, and I'd recommend it to young party-people on a low budget -- but certainly with a few warnings.
