During your Portland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Oregon Maritime Center and Museum
Inside this museum you'll find models of ships that once plied the Columbia and Willamette. Also on display are early navigation instruments, artifacts from the battleship Oregon, old ship hardware, and other maritime memorabilia. The historic steam-powered sternwheeler Portland, moored across Waterfront Park from the museum, is also open to the public. Inside this old steam-powered paddle-wheel tugboat there are more displays about maritime history, and docents are on hand to answer questions about the boat itself.
Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA)
The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA) was created as a resource for exploring and supporting experimental art and new music in Portland. Here, at the Institute's gallery facility, PICA presents visual art exhibitions focusing on contemporary trends in the regional, national, and international art scene. These exhibitions are always innovative and thought-provoking. At various venues around the city, PICA hosts performances by both well-known and less-established performance artists and musicians.
International Rose Test Garden
Covering 4 1/2 acres of hillside in the West Hills above downtown Portland, these are among the largest and oldest rose test gardens in the United States and are the only city-maintained test gardens to bestow awards on each year's best roses. The gardens were established in 1917 by the American Rose Society and are used as a testing ground for new varieties of roses. Though you will likely see some familiar roses in the Gold Medal Garden, most of the 400 varieties on display here are new hybrids being tested before marketing. Among the roses in bloom from late spring to early winter, you'll find a separate garden of miniature roses. There's also a Shakespeare Garden that includes flowers mentioned in the Bard's works. After seeing these acres of roses, you'll understand why Portland is known as the City of Roses and why the Rose Festival in June is the city's biggest annual celebration. The small Rose Garden Store (tel. 503/227-7033), is packed with rose-inspired products.

Nice location but that's about it

Easy walking distance to a lot of different places to eat, etc.

This is located right downtown and it is easy to walk around to a lot of different places. We stayed there and then walked down to the Doug Fir to catch a show, and the walk was not bad. The rooms are small but were fairly clean. The room did include a mini fridge as well. However, our toliet overflowed all over the floor in the middle of the night and the staff was somewhat indifferent about the problem, saying that it had been acting up previously. If you can find a good price it might be worth staying here again.

Very near the Max (light rail) to downtown; very near Convention Center; walking distance to LLoyd Center mall and reasonably-priced restaurants.

Shilo Inn-Only the Location

Eleanor, San Francisco, CA, 2006-12-29

The Lloyd Center is only a short walk away.

Our stay at the Shilo Inn Convention Center in Portland, Oregon is one we'd like to forget. We stayed there four nights. The staff was nasty and unhelpful. It was impossible to hang any clothes since the clothes rack was broken in our room. Our request to change rooms was turned down without any apology or promise to fix the clothes rack. Cleanliness is also not a priority at this Shilo Inn. Furthermore, the room was cramped. We had to put our suitcases on the floor since there was no place else to put them.

Unhappy customer

Anonymous, 2006-12-14

the restuarant was a denny's and the food was just ok.

the furniture was really banged up. the bed was very uncomfortable. it took 30 minutes to get hot water into the room. and when we asked for a downstairs room because i am dissabled they said they did not have one, and I counted 9 rooms empty. I will never stay there again.

No Help

Anonymous, 2006-12-14

Although the early check in was nice, and the room was clean, the gentleman at the front desk was what I consider "rude" for someone who is dealing with a guest at thier hotel. When checking in, although I was the only one in the lobby, he felt the personal phone call he was on was more important than assisting me. I waited at least 5 minutes for that phone call to end. Once it did end, he was very short, and rather rude. He acted as if I was wasting HIS time. Once he gave me the card key, I went to the room and it didn't work. I went back down, he swiped it, and told me to try it again. I did, still didn't work. This happened another time. On my fourth trip back down to the lobby with my luggage in tow, he finally used a different card. Never once did he ask if I needed assistance with my things which I found rather rude since it was his mistake that left me dragging my luggage up and down the stairs. I would not stay there again, only for the fact that I believe in Customer Service. I would gladly pay an extra $20- to stay at the hotel across the street next time.

Give or take

Carissa, Portland, OR, 2006-08-02

Lloyd Center has some great shopping and a Stanford's Restaurant.

My experience was somewhat satisfactory. It is a nice location, right next to the Max line so you can get downtown free and easily. Also, check-in starts at 2pm, which was wonderful. Unfortunately, parking is on a first come, first serve basis, and there are only about 20 spaces. Also, if you drive an SUV, you may have trouble maneuvering it in the small spaces. continental breakfast--it's barely edible, unless you consider Tang beverage and pre-packaged, past-dated danishes and muffins a good start to the day. Overall, it's a good location and a pretty good value.

basic, clean, and good location

Anonymous, Walla Walla, WA, 2006-07-01

This is a good launching pad to got downtown, NW, or SE--all destinations for food, fun, and just strolling about.

This Shilo Inn is a good bargain for a Portland hotel. It is centerailly located--near Lloyd Center,(a Starbucks a block away) and very convenient for getting to PDX's trendy SE side and downtown. It ain't fancy, yet the room was clean, spacious, and met all our needs. The addition a fridge was a nice bonus. My only MINOR gripe was that, although it was a non-smoking room, it smelled like it had recently been one. The smell of heavy perfumes couldn't quite drown out the smell of an ashtry. But again, that was pretty minor.

Decent value, with some issues

Geoffrey, 2006-05-09

The Shilo Inn/Convention Center in Portland is a small motel dwarfed by the larger hotels in the area. The rooms were recently remodeled, and while some of the layout choices are a bit ... unique, the room is well-appointed. Parking was sufficient at the time I was there, although I imagine that parking might be insufficient if the Inn was near capacity. The wireless Internet access was inadequate and is my main complaint with the hotel. Guests must register a MAC address with the front desk, but they are not told this upon check-in. Additionally, the network was spotty, often fading out to little or no signal. I cycled my connection about every 20 minutes---which is unacceptable. I was very close to the office, so it's not as if distance was a factor.

Would not recommend

Kenneth, 2006-04-13

Lloyd Center Shopping center. A Great place to shop.

The staff did not make this stay easy. There was a drunk couple that arrived and were at the wrong hotel. They vomited outside our window. The staff was asked to please clean it and we were told housekeeping would clean it up in the morning. Unacceptable!

Middle of the road

Eric, Portland, OR, 2005-03-21

The check in took too long. Not enough help. The grounds could have been cleaner. Too much trash in the parking lot. Nice to be able to have coffee and rolls in the morning. Over all good price and confortable room.
