A landmark presence on the waterfront, RiverPlace Hotel is the pride and essence of Portland and the Pacific Northwest. During your Portland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Portland Classical Chinese Garden
This classically styled Chinese garden takes up an entire city block and is the largest of its type outside of China. The gardens, located in Portland's Chinatown, are surrounded by walls that serve to separate the urban 21st century from the timeless Chinese landscape that lies within. That landscape is designed to evoke the wild mountains of China and to create a tranquil oasis within an urban setting. The gardens are centered around a small pond, at one end of which stands a rock wall meant to conjure up the sort of images often seen in Chinese scroll paintings. Numerous pavilions, a small bridge, and a winding pathway provide ever-changing views of the gardens. With its many paved paths and small viewing pavilions, this garden has a completely different feel than the Japanese Garden. Try to visit as soon as the gardens open in the morning; when the crowds descend and the guided tours start circulating--well, so much for tranquility. Be sure to stop and have a cup of tea and maybe a snack in the garden's tea room.
Oaks Park Amusement Center
What would summer be without the screams of happy thrill-seekers risking their lives on a roller coaster? Pretty boring, right? Just ask the kids. They'll tell you that the real Portland excitement is at Oaks Park. Covering more than 44 acres, this amusement park first opened in 1905 to coincide with the Lewis and Clark Exposition. Beneath the shady oaks for which the park is named, you'll find waterfront picnic sites, miniature golf, music, and plenty of thrilling rides. The largest wood-floored roller-skating rink in the west and an organist still plays the Wurlitzer for the skaters.
Japanese Garden
Considered the finest example of a Japanese garden in North America, Portland's Japanese Garden is one of the city's most popular attractions. Don't miss it. Not only are there five different styles of Japanese gardens scattered over 5 1/2 acres, but there's also a view of volcanic Mount Hood, which has a strong resemblance to Mount Fuji. While Japanese gardens are traditionally not designed with colorful floral displays in mind, this garden definitely has its seasonal highlights. In early spring there are the cherry trees, in midspring there are the azaleas, in late spring a huge wisteria bursts into bloom, and in early summer, huge Japanese irises color the banks of a pond. Among the gardens, there's a beautiful and very realistic waterfall. This is a very tranquil spot and is even more peaceful on rainy days when the crowds stay away, so don't pass up a visit just because it's raining. Also, on the third Saturday of each of the summer months, there's a demonstration of the Japanese tea ceremony in the garden's tea house. There are also many special events held here throughout the year (ikebana, bonsai, Japanese-inspired art).

Great location

Shopping and dinning very close

Great location, nice and unique rooms. 1/2 the rooms in the hotel have no view whatsoever. Request city or river view for something other than looking into a box.

A Home Away From Home

Alan, Honolulu, HI, 2006-05-21

Bring comfortable shoes. You will enjoy walking.

The River Place Hotel was a welcome retreat from the bustle of a hectic trip. The rooms were very comfortable and the bed with it's pillow menu was like being at home. The staff was friendly and were there for you at all times. They helped you into the room and made sure that you had all that you needed to be comfortable. From ice to directions or reservations, they were always there. The hotel was conveniently placed on the water and the water front park. Long walks in the evening were a great way to end the day. The freeway ramps were easily accessed and made travel a pleasure. Our family would stay there again.

beatiful views everywhere

i think this was the most comfertable hotel i have ever stayed in , the hotel is very clean the servies is excellent in all caterories , evrybody is very helpful and nothing is problem. we arrieved earlier then expected and before check in time , it only took few minutes to get us in to a beutiful room.the room was large and very nice colors . it is so close to centrum that we coiuld walk everywhere we also visited the gym and the pool , which was not in the same building but close enough. the only reason that i did not give all very satesfied is because the last day we were there we had breakfast at the restaurant and the food was ok we had only toasts and pancakes , but we got the check before we even had started eating that seamed alittle rushed . maybe that is the standard but it had not happend before.

Parkland nearby if you are a runner, walker etc.

It is very close to the on-ramp of I-5 Highway and is actually below the sightline of the city because there is on-going and noisy sewer reconstruction directly in front of the Hotel..............They charge $24 a day to park and valet your car and you are expected to tip the employees at every turn.....The one restaurant on the property is way overrated.. ( We are in the Restaurant business in San Francisco ) Overall, I feel sorry for the employees who have to convey this tangle of misinformation to the unsuspecting guests. One more thing, don't over pack they seem to dislike drawer space, even though we had a 2 room suite , we didn't have enough space for our things..........Tiny TV's added to our relaxing and truly miserable experience

sandra, Seattle, WA, 2006-02-12

The Pearl district is a don't miss area...full of restaurants and coffee houses, with a brand new Williams Sonoma Home store...very exclusive and beautiful.

This hotel was done in a fabulous craftsman style. The valet at the door, the front desk folks and all other hotel employees were just perfectly helpful and wonderful. This hotel is a bit of a hike to downtown, but the rail line is fun. Spring would be just perfect, we were sorry to have missed the booms on the trees.

Excellent location

Jesse, Seattle, WA, 2005-08-14

The heart of downtown Portland is just a five minute walk.

My husband and I found the RiverPlace Hotel on the internet - it looked beautiful and we were not disappointed! The location was excellent, just a couple minute walk to downtown Portland, and the staff was very welcoming and helpful. They told us about different events going on that weekend and answered any questions we had. The room was nice, and the bed was extremely comfortable. The only thing that was missing was a hot tub, but there is a health facility a block down the road. It was a wonderful atmosphere and we loved being on the river.

Best Bed Ever

Penny, San Francisco, CA, 2005-04-15

I have stayed in many wonderful hotel rooms. By far this was the most comfortable bed I have ever been in. There were numerous down pillows of varying thickness and the sheets and comforter were great!
