The Gershwin Hotel is the preferred address for the creative international traveler. Located in the trendy flatiron district of Manhattan just around the corner from King Kong*s famous empire state building. The Gershwin is just steps away from shopping along Fifth Avenue as well as many of the city*s unique restaurants, bars and clubs. The Gershwin is not just another big apple hotel, it is one of the newest *New York Experiences* the hotel shines with New York*s most creative artists, live performances, nightly entertainment, on-site art gallery, exceptional rooftop for sun-worshipping plus other features too numerous to mention. Exciting. Convenient. Artistic. Affordable.

Open 24 hours.I will return to The Gershwin, primarily for its price and atmosphere. I was happy with the location; a block or two from the N/R or 6 subway (downtown, in the Flatiron District -- I would discourage walking here from, say, Times Square). There's no on-site food, but they recommend a short walk around the corner to a nice deli/cafe (which also has wifi for pay -- see below). While I was there the lobby was decorated in an Andy Warhol style (or hosting a Warholish exhibition) and the floor I stayed on was painted with Warholish or Pop Art murals. My view out the window was of the building next door, but I didn't mind. The room itself was small, but I liked it; single travelers or a couple with a dash of adventure should enjoy it. The area also feels relatively safe. I was pretty dissatisfied with the way the hotel catered to laptop travelers. The Gershwin offers wifi Internet access for pay, but the wifi did not work with my Mac laptop, which doesn't usually have problems. I called the 800 number for tech support, and they were unable to fix the problem. Then, when I tried to leave the hotel, I asked if I could leave my laptop with the front desk (as I had at another hotel) because the in-room safe was too small to fit it -- and they refused. However, they did let me check luggage later -- you might try simply checking your laptop without revealing what it is! I ended up taking my laptop everywhere with me (even into a Broadway show) and it wasn't a problem. Score 4 out of 5 Good for trip of friends Anonymous, Washington, DC, 2006-12-29 I stayed at the Gershwin Hotel with 2 of my friends. The room was comfy but smaller than we thought. The bathroom was ok. We liked the hotel staffs; they allowed us to stay a couple more hours after check out time. And they also co-operated with some other things that we asked of. There is a cafe near the restaurant that we really liked. And the 28th street subway station is just a block away. Somehow I don't recommend this hotel for the family trip, as there is not much amenities. Score 5 out of 5 Great value, friendly staff, fun ambience Anonymous, Philadelphia, PA, 2006-12-19 The location makes it excellent for seeing Chelsea galleries and it's within walking distance of all midtown sights. There's no food service but a very good cafe on the next corner of 5th Avenue for eat-in or take-out.I've chosen to stay here often since its low rates makes an overnight in New York more possible, and I like the Gershwin. There are no extra luxuries so if you want to be pampered this isn't the place. My room has always been clean, room size has varied from quite small to medium. the public spaces have been paid attention to in very artistic, creative, upbeat ways - unlike any other hotel in which I've stayed in NYC. The lobby space has recently been redecorated and with holiday lights is crazily joyful. Score 4 out of 5 Adequate Anonymous, 2006-12-10 There is a nice deli around the corner that was great for breakfast and very affordable. The Gershwin was adequate for what we needed. We were in NY to see the city and holiday stuff. There are no amenities and no food service. They talk about coffee in the lobby, but it wasn't there. I asked to have a cab called to get us to the airport and was told they had no phone numbers for cabs. They wanted to push us toward a town car or bus. Not sure why. So I stood in the street and got my own cab. Score 4 out of 5 Very nice hotel, excellent location, but Anonymous, Baltimore, MD, 2006-11-26 If you have adolescent kids, you might not be happy about the proximity of "The Sex Museum" The 'long walk' to entertainment - down from 27th to 42nd - is PART of the entertainment!the bed felt like my old futon. Other than that I was perfectly pleased with this place, with its interesting decor, excellent location. Doesn't have much in the way of 'amenities' but - this is New York City! Everything you could want to see or do and more is right outside your doorstep. Very pleasant cafes for breakfast within a block, excellent restaurants within a block, subway within a block. Great place to be if you're on foot and interested in visiting Manhattan. Score 3 out of 5 Review Anonymous, Baltimore, MD, 2006-11-15 No review provided by user Score 2 out of 5 Expensive for services provided Anonymous, Boston, MA, 2006-10-15 Nice cafe a block away. The Gershwin suffered from a lack of hot water, any heat in the rooms and an indifferent desk staff. I felt that I was being held responsible for them actually having to get off a chair and perforn their duties. There was no hot water at all on the first day of my stay and after a period of running it for almost a half an hour the next day, lukewarm water started to emerge from the pipes. There was also no heat available. Score 5 out of 5 budget hotel Anonymous, Charlotte, NC, 2006-10-15 resterant one block great for breakfast and lunchThe gershwin hotel was very clean and comfortable the rooms were small but accmomodatable for two double beds. there were no on site acoomdation but there were resterants very close.. the location was central for walking and other transportation. I think complimentary coffee would be a great idea... |
