During your Albuquerque vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Petroglyph National Monument
These lava flows were once a hunting and gathering area for prehistoric Native Americans, who left a chronicle of their beliefs etched on the dark basalt boulders. Some 25,000 petroglyphs provide a nice outdoor adventure after a morning in a museum. You'll want to stop at the visitor center to get a map, check out the interactive computer, and, in summer, hook up with a ranger-led tour. From there, you can drive north to the Boca Negra area, where you'll have a choice of three trails. Take the Mesa Point Trail (30 min.) that climbs quickly up the side of a hill, offering many petroglyph sightings as well as an outstanding view of the Sandia Mountains. If you're traveling with your dog, you can bring her along on the Rinconada Trail. Hikers can have fun searching the rocks for more petroglyphs; there are many yet to be found. This trail (located a few miles south of the visitor center) runs for miles around a huge rincon (corner) at the base of the lava flow. Camping is not permitted in the park; it's strictly for day use, with picnic areas, drinking water, and restrooms provided.
Albuquerque Biological Park: Aquarium and Botanic Garden
For those of us born and raised in the desert, this attraction quenches years of soul thirst. The self-guided aquarium tour begins with a beautifully produced 9-minute film that describes the course of the Rio Grande from its origin to the Gulf Coast. Then, you'll move on to the touch pool, where at certain times of day you can gently touch hermit crabs and starfish. You'll pass by a replica of a salt marsh, where a gentle tidal wave moves in and out, and you'll explore the eel tank, an arched aquarium you get to walk through. There's a colorful coral-reef exhibit, as well as the culminating show, in a 285,000-gallon shark tank, where many species of fish and 15 to 20 sand-tiger, brown, and nurse sharks swim around, looking ominous.Within a state-of-the-art 10,000-square-foot conservatory, you'll find the botanical garden, split into two sections. The smaller one houses the desert collection and features plants from the lower Chihuahuan and Sonoran deserts, including unique species from Baja, California. The larger pavilion exhibits the Mediterranean collection and includes many exotic species native to the Mediterranean climates of southern California, South Africa, Australia, and the Mediterranean Basin. Allow at least 2 hours to see both parks. There is a restaurant on the premises. In December, you can see the "River of Lights Holiday Light Display" Tuesday through Sunday; and June through August you can attend Thursday evening concerts.
American International Rattlesnake Museum
This unique museum, located just off Old Town Plaza, has living specimens of common, uncommon, and very rare rattlesnakes of North, Central, and South America in naturally landscaped habitats. Oddities such as albino and patternless rattlesnakes are included, as is a display popular with youngsters: baby rattlesnakes. More than 30 species can be seen, followed by a 7-minute film on this contributor to the ecological balance of our hemisphere. Throughout the museum are rattlesnake artifacts from early American history, Native American culture, medicine, the arts, and advertising. You'll also find a gift shop that specializes in Native American jewelry, T-shirts, and other memorabilia related to the natural world and the Southwest, all with an emphasis on rattlesnakes.

A Wonderful Place to Stay!

Alan, Bangor, ME, 2006-12-30

Museums; Petroglyh National Monument

This is a lovely hotel; Beautiful architecture carefully cleaned and well maintained. Comfortable rooms with a great view. The location is ideal. It's literally next to historic Old Town, a fun place for shopping, and within walking distance of three nice museums. Additionally, its proximity to Interstates 25 and 40 made it a good base for the trips we took elsewhere. All-in-all, the hotel more than met our expectations and we're looking forward to staying there again the next time we visit Albuquerque. When we saw the locations of the other hotels we'd considered, we concluded we'd made the best choice. The only bummer about our trip was that we flew from snow-less eastern Maine and got caught in a 16, storm of the centuries. That wouldn't have been bad if anybody in NM owned a snow plow!!!! (-:

Great Location - Missing the Details

Anonymous, 2006-12-17

The Hotel Albuquerque at Old Town is a beautiful older hotel right next to Albuquerque's Old Town. The location is great. The restaurant's food is top-notch. The cleanliness of the hotel leaves nothing to be desired. But, it seems to be lacking in the details. The internet network was not allowing us to send emails, but no one we talked to was able to help us with this problem. We had a very nice balcony, but there was no patio furniture on it, so we couldn't really enjoy it. The check-out procedure on the television wasn't working. A lot of little things like this kept us from wanting to return.

Good value for the money

marsha, Ontario, CA, 2006-10-02

Great magarita place across the street.

This was a charming hotel in a good district for "Old Town Atmosphere". I was very dissatisfied on check in. Evidently, the management decided to do renovation of the check in desk the weekend of our stay. We had to check in at a little desk at the front entrance. The problem was that there was no sign letting us know that is where we needed to check in. The two young people at the desk did not acknowledge our arrival or our presence as we just stood around confused as to what we needed to do. We did finally ask a young man where check in was and he pointed us to the desk. It was only then the two young people stopped talking to another hotel employee and decided to help us. We were left feeling like we were interupting their conversation. Our room was a delightful surprise and very comfortable. Great bathroom, and wonderful shower. We ate the the casual dining room and had very good service. The same for breakfast the following morning. The noise was not a pleasant experience, but I was not there for a relaxing vacation. The exercise room was disappointing as several of the pieces of equipment were out of order. We also did not think the dirty room service dishes piled up next to the elevatiors was very classy.

Very Active Hotel

Anonymous, 2006-08-06

The hotel food was ok, but the waiters were great! There is also a few places to eat within walking distance.

This is not the hotel to stay out for a quite relaxing weekend. In the 2 short days we stayed at the hotel there were 2 weddings and a High School Reunion. There were kids running everywhere and it just wasn't the weekend that we were hoping for. The room was nice although our air went out on us twice and the curcuit went out in the bathroom, which they reset within an hour.

Great bargain and Old Town flavor, too

Gerald, Boston, MA, 2006-07-21

The nearby restaurants aren't nearly as good as those in the hotel.

This is our second stay at the Hotel Albuquerque and once again we were pleased with the staff, the room, exceptionally comfortable bed, and the wonderful Old Town flavor of the hotel. Breakfast in the beautiful dining room off the lobby was a pleasure. Our only regret is that we could stay only one night. The room is priced at a bargain level. The location permits one to leave the car parked at the Hotel and simply walk through the nearby Old Town enjoying the many shops and the restful ambience of the square. Don't stay downtown in the glitzy new hotels. Stay here!

Location in Old Town

We loved Church Street Cafe.

The location of the hotel next to Old Town was a real plus with good dining choices and plenty of reasonably priced shopping choices. Much better than Sante Fe where prices are very high and unreasonable.

A great place to stay & see

John, Little Rock, AR, 2006-02-24

The shop's were only a very short away so we had no problem with getting to the shop's with out a car. It was very safe for the women that were with us and the handicap ramp's were ez to get to as well. The city is just outstanding.

At the Hotle Abq in Old Town they were the nicest people we had a ladie in a wheel chair with us and they were out of there way to make the stay just great for the stay.I will not stay anywhere else.
