During your Kansas City vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Thomas Hart Benton Home
From 1939 until he died in his studio in 1975, this 1903, late-Victorian limestone house served as home and studio of Missouri's most renowned 20th-century artist. The house and studio are just as Benton left them, with many personal belongings like clothing, furniture, paints and brushes, and 13 original works, which you can see in about half an hour.
Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
Kansas City's premier museum is especially noted for its Asian art, including Tang dynasty bowls and Ming dynasty furniture; an outdoor sculpture garden with the largest U.S. collection of bronzes by Henry Moore; the largest public collection of works by Missouri native Thomas Hart Benton (closed periodically due to an expansion that will increase the museum's size by 71%, slated for completion in 2007); a collection of 17th- and 18th-century European paintings; Impressionist and post-Impressionist pieces; and American art. The museum includes works by Caravaggio, Titian, Rembrandt, Renoir, Monet, Picasso, Gauguin, van Gogh, Andy Warhol, and Willem de Kooning. The airy Rozelle Court Restaurant has extended dinner hours on Friday, with live jazz. Plan on 2 hours or more here.
Arabia Steamboat Museum
This cargo steamboat, laden with 220 tons of merchandise destined for settlers out west, sank in the Missouri River in 1856, where it remained preserved in cold mud until it was excavated in the 1980s. A virtual time capsule of the 1850s and one of the best collections of pre-Civil War artifacts in the world, the museum provides a fascinating look at frontier life, with displays of the steamboat's cargo, from china and hardware to jewelry and leather boots (900 shoes and boots alone are on display). Tours begin with a film of the excavation and restoration of parts of the boat (which are now on display); plan on 1 1/2 hours here.
