During your Kansas City vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Thomas Hart Benton Home
From 1939 until he died in his studio in 1975, this 1903, late-Victorian limestone house served as home and studio of Missouri's most renowned 20th-century artist. The house and studio are just as Benton left them, with many personal belongings like clothing, furniture, paints and brushes, and 13 original works, which you can see in about half an hour.
Arabia Steamboat Museum
This cargo steamboat, laden with 220 tons of merchandise destined for settlers out west, sank in the Missouri River in 1856, where it remained preserved in cold mud until it was excavated in the 1980s. A virtual time capsule of the 1850s and one of the best collections of pre-Civil War artifacts in the world, the museum provides a fascinating look at frontier life, with displays of the steamboat's cargo, from china and hardware to jewelry and leather boots (900 shoes and boots alone are on display). Tours begin with a film of the excavation and restoration of parts of the boat (which are now on display); plan on 1 1/2 hours here.
Negro Leagues Baseball Museum/American Jazz Museum
These two unique museums, housed under one roof, are in the historic Jazz District. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum tells the compelling story of segregated baseball, from the founding of the Negro National League just a few blocks away in 1920, until Jackie Robinson, who played for the Kansas City Monarchs, signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. The Jazz Museum pays tribute to jazz greats ranging from Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington to Ella Fitzgerald and Charlie Parker, with listening stations throughout. Be sure to see the film in the visitor center highlighting the golden days of the 1930s, when this very district boasted more than 60 jazz clubs and served as the commercial heart of Kansas City's African-American community. The Blue Room, attached to the complex, stages jazz concerts 4 nights a week. Plan on 2 hours here.

Good stay

Anonymous, 2006-10-15

There are several bars and restaurants within close proximity to the hotel (several blocks). There are also several theaters within several blocks were there is live theater, ballet, concerts, etc.

The Hotel Phillips' rooms were large and comfortable. The staff was welcoming and efficient. The location was within close proximity to entertainment. We did not have a chance to utilize a lot of the hotel ammenities secondary to an event in town.

From the moment we arrived, the staff at Hotel Phillips was helpful and pleasant. The staff knew all areas of Kansas City (colleges, bars, restuarants etc) however the food at the hotel was excellent. The Plaza is 15 minutes down Broadway, thetaxi sevice was reasonbale when we needed it. The hotel is quaint and totally retro. We will stay there again.

Too Hot

ernest, 2006-09-24

The Hotell Phillips was nice looking enoughon the outside, but the a/c-heating equipment was not up to par. The a/c filter aws filthy and packed solid with dirt. I call the front desk 4 times on fri-sat.,they did come look at it and then left and I never heard from anyone again. My room was over 75 degrees all the time. When I cheched out of my room on sunday and complained about it, they told me they had the heat on. I believe this was the poorest sevice I have experinced and I would not stay or recomemend them to anyone.

Great Birthday getaway!

Anonymous, 2006-05-05

This hotel is close to theaters, Music Hall, etc.

My husband wanted to take me away for a birthday evening and Hotel Phillips was just the place. We dined in the "Chophouse" restaurant, elegant, peaceful- great and attentive service. We had a lovely corner room-very comfortable bed. The lobby is beautiful and takes you back into a past era of grace and elegance. It was a lovely birthday!

Great Weekend Getaway

Anonymous, Wichita, KS, 2006-03-26

The hotel's chophouse has wonderful service and food.

We enjoyed our weekend away from the kids in at the charming Hotel Phillips. The historic ambiance was a welcome change from the boring hotel chains. The room and bed were comfortable. We could have used a new box of Kleenex, but overall we enjoyed the room. The hotel's Chophouse was pricy, but had superior service and excellent food. We also had brunch on Sunday at the hotel and again it was pricy, but the service and food were great.

The Best Hotel In Kansas City

David, Boston, MA, 2006-02-02

While there are not a lot of places to go as far as entertainment, there are plenty of fun bars within walking distance

The rooms have the most comfortable beds in any hotel that I have stayed in. The fooms were fresh and clean with Aveda amenities. The resturant was fabulous and the waitstaff to notch.

Boutique hotel at a chain price

Anonymous, 2005-12-20

Tanner's is a great brew pub. You get a feeling that the room is filled with regulars, and you are treated like one yourself. The menu is broad but flavorful.

This was my second stay at the Hotel Phillips, and I was again very satisfied with my time there. The rooms are lush and decorated with a designer's flair; I am reminded of much more expensive hotels in more cosmopolitan cities.
