During your Kansas City vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Toy and Miniature Museum
Occupying a 1911 mansion, this museum houses an extensive collection of antique dolls, more than 100 furnished dollhouses, marbles, and toys ranging from model trains to games, as well as perfect scale miniatures of houses, rooms, and furniture. The miniatures are fully functional -- scissors cut, clocks run, and musical instruments can be played, making it a fascinating experience for adults and kids alike. You can easily spend a fascinating hour or more here.
Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
Kansas City's premier museum is especially noted for its Asian art, including Tang dynasty bowls and Ming dynasty furniture; an outdoor sculpture garden with the largest U.S. collection of bronzes by Henry Moore; the largest public collection of works by Missouri native Thomas Hart Benton (closed periodically due to an expansion that will increase the museum's size by 71%, slated for completion in 2007); a collection of 17th- and 18th-century European paintings; Impressionist and post-Impressionist pieces; and American art. The museum includes works by Caravaggio, Titian, Rembrandt, Renoir, Monet, Picasso, Gauguin, van Gogh, Andy Warhol, and Willem de Kooning. The airy Rozelle Court Restaurant has extended dinner hours on Friday, with live jazz. Plan on 2 hours or more here.
Negro Leagues Baseball Museum/American Jazz Museum
These two unique museums, housed under one roof, are in the historic Jazz District. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum tells the compelling story of segregated baseball, from the founding of the Negro National League just a few blocks away in 1920, until Jackie Robinson, who played for the Kansas City Monarchs, signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. The Jazz Museum pays tribute to jazz greats ranging from Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington to Ella Fitzgerald and Charlie Parker, with listening stations throughout. Be sure to see the film in the visitor center highlighting the golden days of the 1930s, when this very district boasted more than 60 jazz clubs and served as the commercial heart of Kansas City's African-American community. The Blue Room, attached to the complex, stages jazz concerts 4 nights a week. Plan on 2 hours here.

Excellent for romance or family getaway

Just a few blocks away is the Kansas City, MO Plaza with many shops. There seems to be something for everyone of all ages. Some of the shops are very spendy but it's always fun to look.

The Raphael Hotel's overall experience was awesome. It has an antique charm with 21st century amenities. The room we stayed in was very large. There was a large sitting room with a couch, table and chairs, and TV. Attached was a large bedroom with a kingsize bed and TV with a vanity and an attached bath. The staff was attentive and friendly. The location puts you walking distance to the Plaza which is famous for great shops and restaurants. Parking was not a problems. It was free for both our cars ... even valet! We plan on going back when the Plaza lights are lit.

Wonderful Hotel!

Michael, Chicago, IL, 2005-08-21

Two places to go; The Melting Pot is right accross the street! WONDERFUL food, drinks and atmosphere! Took my sweetie there and had a romantic time! The second place Skies at the Hyatt Hotel. Overlooks the whole city as the entire restuarnt "turns". We had great food while there for our three hour stay! The dining area rotated around the city-scape three or four times! Beautiful evening...

First time in Kasas City, Mo. Wanted to stay somewhere easy to access and in the buzz of town. This place is it! Friendly/helpful staff, CLEAN rooms, very well taken care of prpoerty. Bottom line it's a very romantic place to stay. I did not have the opportunity to dine in the resturant, but based on the flow of guests in and out of the resturant area - I'm sure it's as outstanding as the rest of the hotel was...

nice and neat

We loved!!! the Capital Grille, I have eaten at hundreds of restaurants all over the country and it was the best filet I have ever tasted. It was so good we went there two nights in a row. Prepare to spend around $60 per person, with everthing.

This was my first stay at the Raphael. It was a very neat and clean facility. Not real fancy. I would recommend a suite over the basic room ,as it is a tad small. Free roadrunner was plus. Also, as for choices at the Plaza, besides the Fairmont, there is no other choice, easy walking distance to the plaza, which is a real plus.

Good Value but Needs Attention

Jeff, 2005-07-24

This boutique hotel in an older building, has been redone in the last few years but needs more attention. The suite on the upper floor was spacious and gracious, but the air conditioning did not cool down the entire large front room area. The finish on the bathtub was peeling (about a 4 inch circumference in the middle of the tub). It was still a good place to stay in the best neighborhood in town. I would rate the hotel 3 1/2 stars.

My review of Raphael Hotel

We only stayed one night but were very satisfied with our stay. We had a suite that was very spacious. The beds were extremely comfortable with a lovely duvet and duvet cover. The staff was extremely helpful and we had prompt service when we requested extra blankets and water. It is an older building and possibly could use some updating in the bathroom. Otherwise, you can't beat the location which is located on the country club plaza.

great location, small and personal.great business amenities

Rochelle, Louisville, KY, 2005-06-05

The Raphael was a delight. It is on the National Historic Trust Register, therefore it is an older hotel, but it has been well maintained . Free hi speed internet was a plus and the staff very helpful. The location across from the Plaza cant be beat.I plan to stay there again
