During your Baltimore vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Baltimore Museum of Industry
Housed in a former cannery in a still-industrial part of Baltimore, the museum gives visitors a look at industries that made Baltimore a manufacturing capital in the 1880s -- canning, printing, and clothing. This museum is geared to children. Wall-size pictures recall the days before child labor laws, and exhibits are set up so kids can get their hands on oyster-shucking stations, antique irons, and moveable type. Tour guides are sensitive to children's attention spans and adjust their talks toward the younger visitor. You can wander the museum without a guide, but the exhibits aren't as interesting without the stories the guides can tell. Other exhibits include one of only two working steam tugboats in the country. The museum is a few blocks from Fort McHenry; a visit to both -- with a picnic on Fort McHenry's lawn -- could make a great day. One of the city's least known museums, it's one of the best for children and anyone who loves industrial history.
Evergreen House
What started as a relatively modest Italianate mansion in the mid-1800s became a 48-room marvel with a 23-karat gold plated bathroom, theatre painted by Leon Bakst, a noted Ballet Russe designer, and room after room of art, books, and objets. Bought in 1878 by the president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, John W. Garrett, the home grew over the years and became more lavish and more famous. Its last owners, John and Alice Garrett, turned it into a glittering salon, entertaining statesmen, authors, artists, and musicians. From the moment visitors arrive at the entrance, a porte-cochere topped by a Tiffany glass awning, they are treated to a multitude of the beautiful rooms, fine arts, and decorative items that reflect the Garretts' travels and interests: a red Asian room displaying Japanese and Chinese items, paintings by Picasso, Modigliani, and Degas, glass by Tiffany, a 30,000-book library, and Dutch marquetry furniture. A tour lasts about an hour. The beautiful formal gardens should be visited, as well. A brochure describing both the house and gardens is available.
Great Blacks in Wax Museum
The first thing you hear when you enter this museum is the sound of moaning, coming from the Slave Ship exhibit. This wax museum doesn't shy away from the tough topics -- a lynching exhibit is in the basement -- but it revels in the African Americans, indeed all people of color, who made a difference. Some you expect: Martin Luther King, Frederick Douglass, and Crispus Attucks, as well as famous athletes, artists, and entertainers. Some may be people you weren't aware of: rodeo star Bill Pickett, Matthew Henson at the North Pole, African Americans who made advances in medicine, science, law, and politics. The second floor is devoted to Marylanders and an exhibit of children's efforts to secure freedom from oppression both in the United States and elsewhere. Parking is available in a supermarket lot across the street.
