During your Boston vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Commonwealth Museum/Massachusetts Archives
The nearby Kennedy Library explores the history of one of Boston's most famous families; here, you might find your own clan's history. The Commonwealth Museum has videos, slide shows, and interactive exhibits on the state's people, places, and politics. Topics covered recently in the regularly changing exhibits include the archaeology of the Big Dig, the Civil War, and state history. In the same building, the state archives contain passenger lists for ships that arrived in Boston from 1848 to 1891; state census schedules that date to 1790; and documents, maps, and military and court records starting with the Massachusetts Bay Company (1628-29). Knowledgeable staff members are on hand to answer researchers' questions in person, by mail, or by phone. This is a worthwhile detour on the way to or from the Kennedy Library.
First Public School/Benjamin Franklin Statue
A colorful folk-art mosaic in the sidewalk marks the site of the first public school in the country. It was founded in 1634, 2 years before Harvard College. Samuel Adams, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, and Cotton Mather studied there. The original building (1645) was demolished to make way for the expansion of King's Chapel, and the school moved across the street. The prestigious institution is now called Boston Latin School. Other alumni include Charles Bulfinch, Ralph Waldo Emerson, George Santayana, Arthur Fiedler, and Leonard Bernstein.Behind the fence in the courtyard to your left is the Benjamin Franklin statue, the first portrait statue erected in Boston (1856). Franklin was born in Boston in 1706 and was apprenticed to his half-brother James, a printer, but they got along so poorly that in 1723 Benjamin ran away to Philadelphia. Plaques on the base of the statue describe Franklin's numerous accomplishments. The lovely granite building behind the statue is Old City Hall (1865), designed in Second Empire style by Arthur Gilman (who laid out the Back Bay) and Gridley J. F. Bryant, and opened in 1865. The administration moved to Government Center in 1969, and the building now houses commercial tenants. To continue on the Freedom Trail: Follow School Street to Washington Street.
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
Isabella Stewart Gardner (1840-1924) was an incorrigible individualist long before strong-willed behavior was acceptable for women in polite Boston society, and her forcefulness paid off for art lovers. "Mrs. Jack" designed her exquisite home in the style of a 15th-century Venetian palace and filled it with European, American, and Asian painting and sculpture, many pieces chosen with the help of her friend and protégé Bernard Berenson. You'll see works by Titian, Botticelli, Raphael, Rembrandt, Matisse, and Mrs. Gardner's friends James McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent. Titian's magnificent Europa, which many scholars consider his finest work, is one of the most important Renaissance paintings in the United States. In my casual poll of local travel experts, the Gardner was the most popular museum. The building, which opened to the public after Mrs. Gardner's death, holds a glorious hodgepodge of furniture and architectural details imported from European churches and palaces. The pièce de résistance is the magnificent sky-lit courtyard, filled year-round with fresh flowers from the museum greenhouse. Although the terms of Mrs. Gardner's will forbid changing the arrangement of the museum's content, there has been some evolution: A special exhibition gallery features two or three changing shows a year, often by contemporary artists in residence. They have a concert series (tel. 617/734-1359). The cafe serves lunch and desserts, and there's an excellent gift shop.

Service Oriented

Alicia, Amarillo, TX

Clio is the restaurant in the hotel. It is an elegant experience. Food was great, but the service was extraordinary.

Our stay at The Eliot was a wonderful experience. The staff is very accommadating and make you feel so welcome. The suites were large and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom was a little small, but still adequate. The only drawback to the room was the lack of a vanity area in or near the bathroom.

A Little Off Center

Beverly, 2006-07-28

We are walkers and all desired areas were either a short walk or a longer walk.

The Hotel Eliot was a lovely hotel. We were not able to communicate our wishes to the staff,i.e. the remote needed new batteries and we asked three times when we left the remote at the desk. Three times it was returned to us not working. Our room was very comfortable and spacious.

Charming European-style hotel

Mary, Omaha, NE, 2005-11-19

1. Dining and shopping abound on Newbury Street, one block from the Eliot 2. Trinity Church, the Boston Common, and other historical sights were within walking distance. 3. Easy walk to the BART to catch a short train to the Museum of Fine Arts.

Located in the heart of the Back Bay district, the Eliot offers sophistication and charm, especially compared with the other options in that area, like the Sheraton or Marriott. At the Eliot, you knew you were in Boston. At those other places, you could have been in any city in the U.S. The staff were gracious, international, and helpful. While we didn't eat in either restaurant, both were busy with Bostonians, not just hotel guests. The rooms were luxurious and classy. The hotel even supplied a map for two running routes that would take you through the Common, MIT, and other area attractions - obviously, all within walking distance. I felt like I was in Europe again, or at least in the best part of Boston. I highly recommend the Eliot for its ambience, staff, and location.

Antique Elegance

Joseph, Fort Lauderdale, FL, 2005-10-17

Great Location. Walk, take the T or a cab.

Small Hotel with an air of European elegance. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. We stayed on the ground floor, the room was small but "cozy" with no view. I believe the small suites that overlook Commonwealth Avenue are preferable. Nationally acclaimed restaurant "Clio" and Sashimi Bar "Uni". Perfect location in Boston's Back Bay,walking distance to fashionable Newbury Street, business district,Fenway Park, and public tranportation. Overall, a great experience!

Dust Bowl of Boston

Thomas, Montgomery, AL, 2005-10-09

The Capitol Grille is close by and has large portion steks at large prices. There is good shopping at the Sheraton Convention Center.

I booked this room and thought this was a good price for a five star hotel, based on a review of prices for several hotels on several online booking sites. When we arrived, we were charmed by the brownstones in the neighborhood and the facade of the hotel. We arrived late at night and the only staff that were evident were the front desk people. They gave us a real room key_ that was the first thing that worried me. How many other people had a copy of the key? The room was a "suite" but the bedroom was so small that I had to walk sideways to get between the bed and the dresser to get to the bathroom. The bathroom was approximately six by four feet and only had a shower that the ceiling was falling in from the mildewed plaster. The bed was only a queen size so the room was not small from too large of a bed but from accual miniaturization. That night the hard and lumpy bed kept me up most of the night. In addition, my wife sneezed most of the night. The next morning, when I was taking my shower, I realized why. My feet were so dirty from walking on the filthy carpet that I left dirty footprints on the tile. Also, the bathroom was so small that there were no towel racks in the bathroom and there was no place for my toiletries except on the commode cover. There was no ice machine in the entire hotel. To get ice a bellman had to bring it to you and he expected a tip. There was a mini-bar in the room but no coffee maker. The Bar in the lobby charged us $15/ drink for cocktails. The neighborhood is nice and the hotel is close to the Sheraton where my meeting was. There were several nice restaurants close to the hotel. This was not a five star hotel. I would not even think it qualified as a flop house. If you stay here, be afraid. Be very afraid.

Friendly, Accomdating and Clean

Mark, Los Angeles, CA, 2005-09-01

Everything from a MacDonalds 4 blocks away, to small cafes with a variety of food. Newberry street is 1 block away, with a variety of all foods available during a leisurely walk.

The Elliot Hotel was very accomdating for my early arrival, quickly finding me a room. the room was clean, complet with everything I could have needed, with a separate bathroom and closet from the main room area. There was plenty of closet and dresser space, seating area and a work desk. I found the hotel was within a quick walk to the areas of Boston where I had to do business with access to an assortment of restuarants and mass transit.

Too many smokers...

Anonymous, 2005-08-17

Centrally located hotel. Very close to Newbury Street and plenty of shopping and restaurants.

While we were upgraded to a suite because the first room smelled of stale cigarettes, the suite ended up having the same odor! Not very pleasant!

Quality, Location, Charm

patiricia, 2005-07-21

Absolutely everything was absolutely excellent. If you are staying in the city and want to stay in a small charming city hotel, with "Clio's," one of the finest restaurants in Boston off the lobby, you will be more than comfortable at the Eliot Hotel.
