During your Boston vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Boston Common
In 1634, when their settlement was just 4 years old, the town fathers paid the Rev. William Blackstone £30 for this property. In 1640 it was set aside as common land. The 45 or so acres of the country's oldest public park have served as a cow pasture, a military camp, and the site of hangings, protest marches, and visits by dignitaries. Today the Common is a bit run-down, especially compared with the adjacent Public Garden, but it buzzes with activity all day. You might see a demonstration, a musical performance, a picnic lunch, or a game of tag -- almost everything but a cow. Cows have been banned since 1830, which seems to be one of the few events related to the Common that isn't commemorated with a plaque. One of the loveliest markers is on this route; head up the hill from the train station inside the fence. At Beacon Street is a memorial designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens to celebrate the deeds (indeed, the very existence) of Col. Robert Gould Shaw and the Union Army's 54th Massachusetts Colored Regiment, who fought in the Civil War. You might remember the story of the first American army unit made up of free black soldiers from the movie Glory. To continue on the Freedom Trail: Cross Beacon Street.
Faneuil Hall Marketplace
Ever since Boston's most popular attraction was restored and reopened in 1976, cities all over the country have imitated the "festival market" concept. A complex of shops, food counters, restaurants, bars, and public spaces, Faneuil Hall Marketplace brims with Boston flavor (and the inevitable national chain outlets). Its popularity with visitors and suburbanites is so great that you could be forgiven for thinking that the only Bostonians in the crowd are employees. The marketplace includes five buildings -- the central three-building complex is on the National Register of Historic Places -- set on brick and stone plazas that teem with crowds shopping, eating, performing, watching performers, people-watching, and just generally enjoying themselves. In warm weather, the whole area is busy from just after dawn until well past dark. Quincy Market (you'll also hear the whole complex called by that name) is the central three-level Greek revival-style building. It reopened after extensive renovations on August 26, 1976, 150 years after Mayor Josiah Quincy opened the original market. The South Market building reopened on August 26, 1977, the North Market building on August 26, 1978.The central corridor of Quincy Market is the food court, where you can find anything from a bagel to a full Greek dinner, a fruit smoothie to an ice cream sundae. On either side, under the glass canopies, are full-service restaurants as well as pushcarts that sell everything from crafts created by New England artisans to hokey souvenirs. Here you'll find a bar that exactly replicates the set of the TV show Cheers. In the plaza between the South Canopy and the South Market building is an information kiosk. On warm evenings, the tables that spill outdoors from the restaurants and bars fill with people. One constant since the year after the market -- the original 1826 market -- opened is Durgin-Park, a traditional New England restaurant known for its good-naturedly crabby waitresses.Faneuil Hall itself sometimes gets overlooked, but it's well worth a visit. Known as the "Cradle of Liberty" for its role as a venue for inspirational (some might say inflammatory) speech in the years leading to the Revolutionary War, the building opened in 1742 and was expanded using a Charles Bulfinch design in 1805. National Park Service rangers give free 20-minute talks every half-hour from 9am to 5pm in the second-floor auditorium.
Larz Anderson Auto Museum
The Larz Anderson Auto Museum occupies an 1888 carriage house modeled after a French château. Beginning in 1899, Larz and Isabel Anderson acquired the cars that form the core of the collection, now the country's oldest private assemblage of antique autos. The cars boast what was then the latest equipment, from a two-cylinder engine (in a 1901 Winton race car) to a full lavatory (in a 1906 CGV). Along with the vehicles, auto-related memorabilia from the collection and from other sources are on display. The museum (formerly the Museum of Transportation) has a good gift shop and frequently schedules special events such as concerts, lectures, and family programs. On most warm-weather Sundays, outdoor lawn events include displays of vehicles such as Corvettes, Cadillacs, Triumphs, European motorcycles, or Italian imports. Call to find out what's being featured during your visit.

You get LESS than you pay for

Peter, 2007-03-11

bars, some restaurants, can easily get to most places in Boston by taxi, the T, or for the energetic a stiff walk

The Shawmut Inn is relatively inexpensive for Boston. But overall you get LESS than you pay for. The room and bathroom were clean. Although clean, the overall appearance of the room was rather shabby, for example, a piece of cardboard covered a ceiling vent, the cardboard was held in place by grey duct tape that was beginning to peel loose. Another example of the overall tacky appearance of the room was the condition of a standard lamp in a corner on one side of the bed, it did not stand upright but leaned over at an angle sharper than the leaning tower of Pisa, the shade on the lamp also hung crookedly. It might have looked OK if the crooked little man from the child's nursery rhyme were renting it. Perhaps it was purchased from him. Even for a relatively reasonably priced room one would at least expect to have a night stand on BOTH sides of the bed each with a reading lamp on it. There was only one night stand, without a reading lamp, the other side of the bed had NO night stand an NO bedside lamp. (The only lamp available was the one from the crooked little man's household effects.) Without a nightstand where was one expected to put one's watch, wallet, spectacles, glass of water or other personal effects before going to sleep? We arrived in Boston after dark and had an appointment to meet someone for dinner in a restaurant near the Prudential Center, 20 minutes later. My wife stayed in the car while I checked in and went up to the room. I went up to the room and in the light from the hallway, put our case down. Had I inspected it more carefully I would have noticed the above defects and requested that the missing items be put into the room or asked to be moved, but being in a hurry I did not. We arrived back at the hotel after midnight a simply wanted to get to sleep, so put up with the inconvenience. When we checked out I mentioned these defects to the desk clerk who took my comments without comment or apology.

Minor glitches

Watch out for parking rates/times. I was charged $57.00 for parking Monday pm, from 4:30 pm 'til Tues,6:30 am the next morning at the government center, the recommended place.

TV in room had bad picture tube. Vending machine on my floor was out of order. Thanks, Sawmutt for special early opening your continental breakfast at 6:00 AM for me.

Close to everything

The Boston Garden is about a five minute walk from this hotel as well as many great restaurants, no need to drive around the city from this location.

If you had to pick a hotel within walking distance of the Garden, restaurants, the T stations, you couldn't ask for a more central location. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again if I had an agenda planned as I did for this last trip. If however, I were looking for a hotel to just "relax and enjoy" in, this is definitely not it. The parking is a couple of blocks away, so remember to empty your car when you check in. All in all, though, it was worth the money spent as we had a weekend filled with activities in and around the area and we were only short walking distance from everything we wanted to do.

Perfect location

Marian, 2007-02-04

Lots of nice restaurants nearby; and the T is just across the street.

The Shawmut Inn is located directly across the street from the TD Banknorth Garden. A perfect location for those of us going into Boston for a show at the Garden, and/or if you take the train into Boston as North Station is right there at the Garden. No long waits at subway lines after the show let out - we just had to cross the street! There are no frills, no pool, no hot tub, no lounge or restaurant within the Inn, but there are many restaurants nearby. The hotel itself could use a little touch up here and there - the room had a lot of paint chipping, carpeting very old. But it was convenient and very affordable. I would stay there again if I should go down for another show at the Garden.

small scale but pleasant

Carroll, 2006-12-28

The Garden is right across the street. Friend St. appears more like an alley at night. Don't mind the hangers outside the Hooters. They are just smoking cigarettes. This is true for Sullivan's Tap. Harmless, though they do appear otherwise. It's the law that they cannot smoke inside.

The Shawmut is not easy to find( not well lit or utilizing good signage) and communicating with the desk staff is easier face to face than over the phone. Once you are checked in and unpacked, it is all a bonus, though. The room is small but you want for nothing in terms of furniture, closet, appliances, etc. It is clean and quiet and safe. This is a diamond in the rough. If you were a sports fan, you'd have the Garden right there. You are right by the T. If you took the commuter line, it is across the street from North Station. This is not as convenient for Amtrak, as, except for trains from Maine, Amtrak does not stop at North Station. The MBTA is very doable from South station, though. A cab fare is not bad, either. The North end is even walkable, if you need it to be. Right across the street is Boston Beer Works, on Canal, which is fun. I wanted bang for my buck and I got what I wanted.

Convenient way to see Boston

Anonymous, Nashville, TN, 2006-11-07

The North End hub of fantastic Italian food is within a short walk.

The Shawmut Hotel was the perfect option for us. We traveled to Boston to apartment hunt and the hotel was convenient to the T, North End, and we were able to get everywhere we needed to be easily and quickly! The hotel staff were friendly and helpful. However, if you're looking for luxury in-hotel meals, it's not your place. Rooms have a microwave kitchenette and are clean and comfortable. We recommend it!
