During your Boston vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Old State House
Built in 1713, this brick structure served as the seat of the colonial government before the Revolution, and as the state capitol until 1797. on July 18, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was first read to Bostonians from the balcony of this building. In 1789, Pres. George Washington reviewed a parade from here. The exterior decorations are particularly interesting -- the clock was installed in place of a sundial, and the gilded lion and unicorn are reproductions of the original symbols of British rule that were ripped from the facade and burned the day the Declaration of Independence was read.Inside is the Bostonian Society's museum of the city's history. The society was founded in 1881 to save this building, which was badly deteriorated and, incredibly, was about to be sold and shipped to Chicago. Exhibits include an introductory video on the history of the building, a meter that illustrates the proximity of the Blue Line subway (which makes the floor vibrate), and displays that focus on the Revolutionary period and more recent history. To continue on the Freedom Trail: Leave the building, turn left, and walk half a block.
USS Constitution Museum
Just inland from the vessel, the museum features participatory exhibits that allow visitors to hoist a flag, fire a cannon, swing in a hammock, and learn more about the ship. The interactive computer displays and naval artifacts appeal to visitors of all ages. A new exhibit about the Barbary War (the only such exhibit in the United States) allows you to decide whether to risk a ship in the Mediterranean. The museum's collections include more than 3,000 items, arranged and interpreted in ways that put them in context. At the navy yard here, National Park Service rangers (tel. 617/242-5601) staff an information booth and give free 1-hour guided tours of the base.To continue on the Freedom Trail: Follow the trail up Constitution Road, crossing Chelsea Street, and continue to the Bunker Hill Monument. A more interesting, slightly longer route runs from Chelsea Street and Rutherford Avenue (back at the bridge) across City Square Park.
The Institute of Contemporary Art
Across from the Hynes Convention Center, the ICA mounts rotating exhibits of 20th- and 21st-century art, including painting, sculpture, photography, and video and performance art. Its shows are among the most imaginative around, focusing on everything from baseball to Mexico. The institute also offers films, lectures, musical performances, poetry readings, and educational programs for children and adults. The 1886 building, originally a police station, is a showpiece in its own right. The ICA's profile is on the rise. It's in the process of building a new museum at Fan Pier, on the South Boston waterfront near the federal courthouse. A $37 million project designed by the pioneering New York firm Diller + Scofidio, the new building is scheduled to open in 2006. Check this space for details and updates in future editions.

Copley Square Hotel
Perhaps it's the personalized service and somewhat casual atmosphere that encourages writers to describe the hotel as European in style. Though understandable, the hotel is also, undoubtedly, unique to Boston. Owned and operated by the Saunders family of Boston for three generations, the Copley Square Hotel is a local landmark, gracing the corner of Huntington Avenue and Exeter ...

Fantastic getaway for a fan

Rachael

Don't bother traveling too far- the pub fare next door was tasty and very resonably priced.

I was at irst nrevous about navigating my way to the Onyx, but found it with ease- which for Boston says alot. We were greated curbside by the valet who helped with our bags, and let us know what the cost for parking would be and where the car would be located. We entered the lobby and were warmly greated by two individuals behind the desk. While I compleated the check-in the other attendent engaged my boyfriend in the news of the hours- the David Beckham contract. It felt very familiar and the lobby spoke well of what the rest of the hotel was like- cozy, quite, lushly appointed and contempory. Our room was perfect and the bed was very comfortable. After a nap we headed to the game, the purpose of our trip. We were thrilled to find out we were barely a block from the garden. On the short walk there were two restaurant/bars, a corner store and an ATM. It couldn't have been in a better location. We were also a five minute walk from Quincy Market. Overall our experience with the hotel and staff was great, we even found out that not only do they accept pets, they welcome them, with a bowl of biscuits and a personalized welcome sign, right in the lobby. The Onyx was fabulous and I highly recommend it.

Pet Friendly Paradise!

Anonymous, 2006-10-30

This hotel is within a block of the Boston Garden for all sorts of sporting and concert events, plus less than a mile to shopping, dining, Fanuiel Hall and other great Boston attractions.

The Onyx not only accepts pets, they cater to them. They have no breed or size restrictions, and have a pet welcome mat and doggy dishes right when you walk in. They have have a room service menu of dog food and dog treats, and the bellman will walk your dog for no extra charge!

Kimpton

Anonymous, 2006-08-10

The Onyx hotel was nice. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were nicely decorated. The staff was very helpful. The only complaint is that the "king deluxe" was very small. Compared to other Kimpton hotels the room was much smaller. Good location-walking distance to Fanuiel Hall. Cocktail hour at the hotel is a nice touch.

Great Location

scott, Sarasota/Bradenton, FL, 2006-07-28

Little Italy is a must !

The Onyx is in a great location. All attractions are within walking distance yet far from "heavy tourist" areas. MANY restaurants, all within 4 or 5 blocks. Room was a little smaller then we'er used to but comfortable and clean. The only complaint, the air conditioning was so loud, it was difficult to sleep. The room temp. was always hot or cold. Overall, very nice. We would go back.

Really close to the Boston Garden.

The room was nice, it wasn't any better than others and I will stay just down the block on a much cheaper one next time. My good comment was that the staff was nice and polite.
