Omni Parker House

60 School Street , Boston, MA 02108
As guests pass through the sculpted bronze doors of this four star luxury hotel, they will be enveloped by the timeless beauty that has made the Omni Parker House a Boston landmark since 1855. Admire the oak-paneled walls and breathtaking crystal chandeliers that grace the hotel lobby. The Omni Parker House has made many culinary contributions including Parker House Rolls and the Massachusetts official state dessert, the Boston Creme Pie. The Omni Parker House is the longest continually operated hotel in America, and was called "one of the most historic hotels in America" by the Historic Traveler magazine. The Omni Parker House is Boston's only hotel on the historic Freedom Trail, and is the beginning stop on the New England Literary Trail, the place where Oliver Wendell Holmes, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Charles Dickens all participated in a literary roundtable, and where Dickens gave his first reading of "A Christmas Carol".

During your Boston vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
New England Aquarium
This complex is home to more than 15,000 fish and aquatic mammals, and at busy times, it seems to contain at least that many people -- in July and August, try to make this your first stop of the morning, especially on weekends. You'll want to spend at least half a day here, and huge afternoon crowds can make getting around painfully slow. Also consider investing in a Boston CityPass; it allows you to skip the ticket line, which can be uncomfortably long, and may represent a savings on the steep admission charge. The Simons IMAX Theatre, which has its own building, hours, and admission fees, is worth planning ahead for too. Its 85-foot-by-65-foot screen shows 3-D films with digital sound that concentrate on the natural world. It's a dizzying experience. The focal point of the main building is the four-story, 200,000-gallon Giant Ocean Tank. A four-story spiral ramp encircles the tank, which contains a replica of a Caribbean coral reef and an assortment of sea creatures that seem to coexist amazingly well. Part of the reason for the peace might be that scuba divers feed the sharks twice a day. Other exhibits show off freshwater and tropical specimens, a wide variety of jellyfish, denizens of the Amazon, and the ecology of Boston Harbor. The floating marine mammal pavilion, Discovery, is home to performing sea lions. At the Edge of the Sea exhibit, visitors can touch the sea stars, sea urchins, and horseshoe crabs in the tide pool. The Aquarium Medical Center is especially involving -- it's a working veterinary hospital.Naturalist-led harbor tours that teach "Science at Sea" run daily in the spring, summer, and fall. Discounts are available when you combine a visit to the aquarium with an IMAX film, harbor tour, or whale watch.
Mary Baker Eddy Library/Mapparium
The Mary Baker Eddy Library, a research center with two floors of interactive and multimedia exhibits, opened in 2002. Its mission is to explore ideas of liberty, spirituality, and the like throughout history. A central role is reserved for Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science. The library's most intriguing exhibit is the Mapparium, a unique hollow globe 30 feet across. Both a work of art and an illustration of political history, the globe consists of a bronze framework that connects 608 stained-glass panels. Because sound bounces off the nonporous surfaces, the acoustics are as unusual as the aesthetics. As you cross the glass bridge just south of the equator, you'll see the political divisions of the world from 1932 to 1935, when the globe was constructed.
Harrison Gray Otis House
Legendary architect Charles Bulfinch designed this gorgeous 1796 mansion for an up-and-coming young lawyer who later became mayor of Boston. The restoration was one of the first in the country to use a computer analysis of the wall paint, and the result was revolutionary: It revealed that the colors on the walls were drab because the paint was faded, not because they started out dingy. Furnished in the style to which a wealthy family in the late-18th-century and early-19th-century United States would have been accustomed, the Federal-style building is a colorful, elegant treasure. Guided tours (the only way to see the house) discuss the architecture of the house; post-Revolutionary social, business, and family life; and the history of the neighborhood.

Omni has some small rooms but good value

Robin, Burlington, VT, 2007-03-14

shopping, hisotrical stuff and charm and has an easy subway stop across the street that will get you to anything not within walking distace.

The Omni Parker House is a wonderfully old historic hotel with lots of character. although it lacks some of the modern amenities of the newer hotels, Boston is is its full regalia at the Parker House. Omni has done a good job of keeping it up and putting the proverbial earings on the pig as it were. There are some tiny rooms on the interior of the building which on this visit was very load with nearby consutruction. That said, the rate was really good for Beantown in the convention season and nothing beats the history of the Parker House!

Great location

Anonymous, Chicago, IL, 2007-02-26

This hotel is in a perfect location with easy access to several T stations and right by the Boston Common and other sites; an easy walk to just about anywhere. It's a beautiful and historic hotel but the rooms and bathroom are pretty small and the upkeep is not what I expected. The concierges were useless, which was also a big surprise for this kind of hotel.

Historical, comfortable hotel

anne, Los Angeles, CA, 2007-02-26

The Freedom Trail led us down a few blocks to Quincy market, Fanuil Hall and Boston Common.

Having been here many years ago, we were expecting the small room which awaited us...and we weren't disappointed! The room, although small with a dismal view of a brick wall, was comfortable, lovely bed linens and down comforter, an upgraded bathroom, and nice amenities. When our television was blurry, an engineer from housekeeping was there to replace a cable within minutes. The location can't be beat, right on The Freedom Trail.

Excellent Location, passable accomodations

Anonymous, 2007-02-25

The Freedom Trail is right outside the hotel door. Pick up a Starbucks across the street and start walking!

We appreciated the proximity of this Omni hotel to the Freedom Trail. The bed and room were comfortable, but our view was of a major construction site next door, with construction commencing at 7 am. Unfortunately, the bathtub had a permanent reddish pink stain in it and, on one of the three nights, the fresh sheets had a stain on them. Two calls to the front desk and room service to deliver cream for our coffee and later to pick up our room service tray yielded no results. We went to the bar for dessert, coffee and after dinner drinks one night and did enjoy the experience very much. We might consider staying there again, given its excellent location. But, we would most likely look for other accomodations.

Convenient & Elegant

KATHLEEN, 2007-02-25

We opted not to order theatre tickets in advance. Instead we took a short walk to the Quincy Market area where we purchased half price tickets the day of the show. The theatres are about a brisk 15 minute walk from the Parker House.

Our long weekend in Boston was fantastic because we stayed at the Omni Parker House! We arrived early and were greeting by a very friendly doorman who took our bags, had our car parked and confirmed that our room was available for an early check in. The Parker House is walking distance from everything we wanted to do, from dining in the North End to taking in shows in the Theatre District. It was a very cold February weekend but that didn't stop us from taking in all that Boston has to offer. And when we were tired we were embraced by the comfort and elegance of the Parker House.

cozy and convenient

Everything -- shopping, Boston Commons, history, ideal location.

The Omni Parker is a very warm and welcoming, but also efficiently run hotel. It has lots of the flavor of the grand hotels of the past -- it has a long distinguished history in Boston. This means it is not slick and spanky new, but I like that. My single room, with a divine double bed, was a really good buy off-season, small, but a great place to read, watch TV, listen to my -iPod. the bathroom had the best soap and lotion I have used in years! The location is so good that I would stay there even when I have the option of staying with friends. It is a great place to see the amazing history of Boston. They seem to do a big group business, but as a visitor on her own I never felt the hotel was noisy or over-crowded.

Excellent staff, great location

Beryl, New Orleans, LA, 2007-02-19

The Omni Parker House's location provides excellent access to public transportation and to the Liberty Trail. The deluxe room included two full size beds and was smaller than anticipated. However, the bedding linens were sumptous and were relaxing and very comfortable. The bathroom was attractive and well designed for a small space. However, the bathroom and bedroom lacked a space for storing cosmetics and hair applicances.

Very elegant

There were a few restaurants nearby.

The Omni Parker House was a pleasant surprise. The accomodations were very formal and yet it felt like being at home. The staff was extremely helpful without seeming stuffy. It was a great experience.

The Omni Parker House was very comfortable. The bed has more pillows on it then I have every seen in a hotel before. It is in the perfect location. It is a short walk to both Boston Commons and Quincy Market. It is a beautiful hotel.
